1 Eis o que foi dito a Jeremias a respeito de todo o povo de Judá, no quarto ano do reinado de Joaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá {era no primeiro ano de Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia}2 e que o profeta Jeremias tornou conhecido de todo o povo de Judá e dos habitantes de Jerusalém:3 Desde o décimo terceiro ano de Josias, filho de Amon, rei de Judá, até este dia, eis que vinte e três anos são decorridos desde que a palavra do Senhor me foi dirigida e que vo-la transmiti com assiduidade, sem a terdes, entretanto, escutado.4 Continuamente o Senhor enviou-vos os profetas, seus servos, mas nenhuma atenção lhes prestastes, e não destes ouvidos às suas mensagens.5 Assim falava ele: renuncie cada um de vós à vida perversa e à maldade do procedimento, e ficareis para sempre na terra que o Senhor vos havia concedido, assim como a vossos pais desde sempre.6 Não andeis à procura de outros deuses, para ante eles vos prostrardes e lhes renderdes culto. Não me provoqueis à cólera, para vossa própria desgraça, com esses {ídolos} que vossas mãos fabricaram.7 Mas não me escutastes - oráculo do Senhor -, o que provocou minha cólera, para a vossa desgraça, por causa dos {ídolos} feitos por vossas mãos.8 Por isso, assim disse o Senhor dos exércitos: porque não me escutastes as palavras,9 vou conclamar todas as tribos do norte, - oráculo do Senhor -, assim como o meu servo, Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia, a fim de lançá-los contra esta terra e seus habitantes, e todas essas nações que a cercam. Votá-los-ei ao interdito e deles farei objeto de assombro, de assobio e de eterna ruína.10 Abafarei seus gritos de alegria e os cânticos de júbilo, a voz do esposo e da esposa, e amortecerei o ruído da mó e o brilho da lâmpada.11 Converter-se-á esta terra em angústia e solidão, e por setenta anos lhe há de perdurar a servidão ao rei de Babilônia.12 Decorridos esses setenta anos, castigarei o rei de Babilônia e seu povo por causa de seus pecados - oráculo do Senhor -, assim como a terra dos caldeus, que transformarei definitivamente num deserto.13 Contra essa terra executarei todas as ameaças que proferi contra ela, e que neste livro se acham consignadas. {O que Jeremias profetizou contra todas as nações pagãs.}14 Porquanto, eles serão, por sua vez, subjugados por numerosas nações e grandes reis, e lhes retribuirei segundo os atos e feitos de suas mãos!15 Eis o que me disse o Senhor, Deus de Israel: Toma de minhas mãos esta taça cheia do vinho de minha ira, e faze com que dele bebam todos os povos, aos quais te enviarei.16 Quando o tiverem bebido, ficarão aturdidos e enlouquecerão à vista da espada que contra eles enviarei.17 Tomei, então, a taça das mãos do Senhor e dela fiz beberem todos os povos aos quais me enviou o Senhor:18 Jerusalém e as cidades de Judá, seus reis e chefes, para transformar tudo num deserto, numa desolação ante a qual se há de escarnecer, exemplo que será citado entre as maldições, como hoje se vê;19 ao faraó, rei do Egito, aos seus servos, oficiais e povo,20 assim como à mistura das populações, a todos os reis de terra de Us, a todos os reis da terra dos filisteus e a Ascalon, Gaza, Acaron, ao que resta de Azot,21 à Iduméia, a Moab e aos filhos de Amon;22 a todos os reis de Tiro, aos de Sidônia e aos das ilhas que estão além do mar,23 e a Dedã, Tema e Buz; a todos os que se fazem cortar os cabelos nas têmporas;24 aos reis da Arábia e aos da mistura de populações que habita o deserto;25 a todos os reis de Zambri, aos de Elã e aos reis da Média;26 a todos os reis do norte, próximos ou longínquos, uns após outros; a todos os reinos do mundo que habitam na superfície da terra. E depois deles beberá o rei de Sesac.27 Dir-lhes-ás, então: assim disse o Senhor Deus de Israel: Bebei, embriagai-vos, vomitai, e caí para não mais vos levantardes sob o gládio que envio contra vós. -28 Se recusarem tomar a taça de tuas mãos para beber, isto lhes dirás: eis o que me disse o Senhor dos exércitos: Haveis de bebê-la.29 É pela cidade, onde meu nome foi invocado, que começo a punir; e vós, estaríeis isentos do meu castigo? Não, não sereis poupados, pois que farei vir a espada sobre todos os habitantes da terra - oráculo do Senhor dos exércitos.30 E assim profetizarás: Ruge o Senhor do alto do céu, e de sua morada santa faz ouvir a sua voz. Ruge contra o seu rebanho, e lança o grito do pisador contra todos os habitantes da terra.31 Estende-se o tumulto até os confins do mundo, pois que o Senhor está em litígio com as nações. Entra em processo contra toda carne, entregando à espada os maus - oráculo do Senhor.32 Eis o que diz o Senhor dos exércitos: eis que o flagelo vai estender-se de nação em nação. E dos confins da terra vai desencadear-se violenta tempestade.33 Aqueles que o Senhor nesse dia tiver atingido, de uma a outra extremidade da terra, não serão chorados, nem recolhidos e sepultados, jazendo no solo qual esterco.34 Brami, pastores, gritai! Rolai na poeira, chefes do rebanho! Pois que chegou o dia de vossa destruição, e caireis como carneiros escolhidos.35 Não haverá mais refúgio para os pastores, nem salvação para os chefes do rebanho!36 Ouvi os gritos dos pastores, e os bramidos dos chefes do rebanho, porque o Senhor lhes devasta os pastos.37 A placidez dos campos é devastada pela cólera fervente do Senhor.38 Partiu qual leão ao safar-se da rede; a terra vai transformar-se em deserto, sob os golpes do gládio destruidor, e da ardente cólera do Senhor.

1 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of Jehoyakim the son of Josiah the king of Judah, which is the first year of Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon;2 Which Jeremiah the prophet spoke concerning all the people of Judah, and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying,3 From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon the king of Judah, even until this day, that is now three and twenty years, the word of the Lord hath come unto me, and I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye have not hearkened.4 And the Lord hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets, making them rise early and sending them; but ye have not hearkened, and have not inclined your ear to hear.5 They said, O do turn away every one from his evil way, and from the wrongfulness of your doings; and ye shall remain in the land that the Lord hath given unto you and to your fathers, for from eternity to eternity;6 And go not after other gods to serve them, and to bow down to them, and provoke me not to anger with the works of your hands; and I will not injure you.7 Yet have ye not hearkened unto me, saith the Lord: in order that ye might provoke me to anger with the works of your own hands to your own injury.8 Therefore thus hath said the Lord of hosts, Because ye have not hearkened to my words:9 Behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith the Lord, and to Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them over this land, and over its inhabitants, and over all these nations round about, and I will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and a derision, and perpetual ruins.10 And I will banish from them the voice of gladness, and the voice of joy, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the sound of the mill, and the light of the lamp.11 And this whole land shall become a ruin and an object of astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.12 And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are completed, that I will visit on the king of Babylon, and on that nation, saith the Lord, their iniquity, and on the land of the Chaldeans, and will change it into perpetual desolations.13 And I will bring over that land all my words which I have spoken concerning it, all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah hath prophesied concerning all the nations.14 For when many nations and great kings shall have made them also serve: I will then recompense them according to their deeds, and according to the work of their own hands.15 For thus hath said the Lord the God of Israel unto me, Take the cup of the wine of this fury out of my hand, and cause all the nations to whom I send thee to drink it.16 And they shall drink, and reel about, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them.17 And I took the cup out of the hand of the Lord, and caused to drink all the nations, unto whom the Lord had sent me:18 Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and its kings, and its princes, to make them a ruin, an astonishment, a derision, and a curse; as it is this day;19 Pharaoh the king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people;20 And all the confederated nations, and all the kings of the land of ‘Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Gazzah, and ‘Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod;21 Edom, and Moab, and the children of ‘Ammon;22 And all the kings of Tyre, and all the kings of Zidon, and the kings of the isle which is beyond the sea;23 Dedan, and Thema, and Buz, and all those that have their hair cut round;24 And all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the confederated nations that dwell in the wilderness;25 And all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of ‘Elam, and all the kings of Media;26 And all the kings of the north, that are far and that are near, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the world, which are upon the face of the earth; and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them.27 And thou shalt say unto them, Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Drink ye, and become drunken, and vomit, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword, which I am sending among you.28 And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup of thy hand to drink, that thou shalt say unto them, Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, Ye must certainly drink;29 For lo, on the city which is called by my name, I begin to inflict evil, and ye will remain utterly unpunished? Ye shall not remain unpunished; for a sword am I calling up over all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the Lord of hosts.30 But thou, do thou prophesy concerning them all these words, and say unto them, The Lord will cry aloud from on high, and from his holy habitation will he send forth his voice; he will cry out very loudly over his habitation; the vintner’s call, as they that tread out the grapes, will he lift up against all the inhabitants of the earth.31 A tumultuous noise cometh even to the ends of the earth; for the Lord hath a controversy with the nations, he holdeth judgment over all flesh: the wicked,––these he giveth up to the sword, saith the Lord.32 Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, Behold, evil goeth forth from nation to nation, and a great storm–wind waketh up from the farthest ends of the earth.33 And the slain of the Lord shall be on that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, nor gathered up, nor buried; they shall be as dung upon the surface of the ground.34 Wail, ye shepherds, and cry; and roll yourselves about in the dust, ye leaders of the flocks; for full are your days for you to be slaughtered, and I will scatter you; and you shall fall like a costly vessel.35 And lost shall be the place of refuge for the shepherds, and the escape for the leaders of the flocks to escape.36 There is the voice of the cry of anguish of the shepherds, and the wailing of the leaders of the flocks; for the Lord hath devastated their pasture.37 And in silent desolation lie the pasture–lands of peace, because of the fierceness of the anger of the Lord.38 He hath forsaken his covert, like the young lion; for their land is become desolate, because of the fierceness of the wasting sword, and because of the fierceness of his anger.
