1 No começo do reinado de Joaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, foi dirigida a Jeremias a palavra do Senhor nestes termos:2 Eis o que disse o Senhor: coloca-te no átrio do templo e a toda a gente de Judá, que vier prosternar-se no templo do Senhor, repete todas as palavras que te ordenei dizer, sem deixar nenhuma.3 Talvez as ouçam eles e renunciem ao perverso comportamento. Arrepender-me-ei, então, dos males que cogito desencadear sobre eles por motivo da perversidade de sua vida.4 E então tu lhes dirás: eis o que diz o Senhor: Se não me escutardes, se não obedecerdes à lei que vos impus,5 e não ouvirdes as palavras dos profetas, meus servos, que não cessei de vos enviar continuamente, sem que delas vos importásseis,6 farei deste edifício o que fiz de Silo e desta cidade um exemplo que todos os povos da terra citarão em suas maldições.7 Os sacerdotes, os profetas e todo o povo ouviram Jeremias pronunciar essas palavras no templo.8 Mal, porém, acabara de repetir o que o Senhor lhe ordenara dizer ao povo, lançaram-se sobre ele os sacerdotes, os profetas e a multidão, exclamando: À morte!9 Por que proferes, em nome do Senhor, este oráculo: a este templo: o mesmo acontecerá que a Silo e se transformará em deserto sem habitantes esta cidade? Ajuntou-se então a multidão no templo em torno de Jeremias.10 Ao saberem do que ocorria, acorreram do palácio real ao templo os oficiais de Judá e se postaram no umbral da Porta Nova do templo do Senhor.11 Então, os sacerdotes e os profetas clamaram aos oficiais e à multidão: Este homem merece a morte porque profetizou contra esta cidade, como todos ouvistes com vossos próprios ouvidos.12 Jeremias, porém, retrucou aos oficiais e ao povo: Foi o Senhor quem me deu o encargo de proferir contra este povo e esta cidade os oráculos que ouvistes.13 Reformai, portanto, vossa vida e modo de agir, escutando a voz do Senhor, vosso Deus, a fim de que afaste de vós o mal de que vos ameaça.14 Quanto a mim entrego-me nas vossas mãos. Fazei de mim o que quiserdes e que melhor se vos afigure.15 Sabei, porém, que se me condenardes à morte, será de sangue inocente que maculareis esta cidade e seus habitantes; pois, na verdade, foi o Senhor quem me ordenou vos transmitisse estes oráculos.16 Disseram, então, os oficiais e a multidão aos sacerdotes e profetas: Este homem não merece a morte! Foi em nome do Senhor, nosso Deus, que nos falou.17 Ante a multidão tomaram a palavra alguns dos anciãos:18 Miquéias de Morechet, disseram eles, que profetizava no tempo de Ezequias, rei de Judá, assim falou ao povo: isto diz o Senhor dos exércitos: Sião será como um campo lavrado. Jerusalém será um montão de escombros, e a colina do templo, um morro cheio de mato.19 Ezequias, rei de Judá, e o povo de Judá condenaram-no por isso à morte! Não temeram eles o Senhor? Não lhe imploraram o favor, a ponto de se arrepender do mal com que os ameaçava? E nós poderíamos arcar com a responsabilidade de tão grande crime?20 Houve também um homem que proferia oráculos em nome do Senhor: Urias, filho de Semei, de Cariatiarim. Contra a cidade e o país anunciara os mesmos flagelos que Jeremias.21 Chegaram suas palavras aos ouvidos do rei Joaquim e de seus oficiais e chefes, tendo o rei procurado meios de condená-lo à morte. Urias, informado do que se passava, teve medo e fugiu, refugiando-se no Egito.22 Mas Joaquim enviou ao Egito Elnatã, filho de Acobor, acompanhado de alguns homens.23 Estes trouxeram o profeta do Egito e entregaram-no ao rei, o qual o mandou degolar, jogando seu cadáver na fossa comum.24 Contudo, a influência de Aicã, filho de Safã, protegeu Jeremias, impedindo que fosse entregue ao povo e condenado à morte.

1 In the beginning of the reign of Jehoyakim the son of Josiah the king of Judah came this word from the Lord, saying,2 Thus hath said the Lord, Place thyself in the court of the house of the Lord, and speak against all of the cities of Judah, who come to prostrate themselves in the house of the Lord, all the words that I have commanded thee to speak unto them: omit not a word thereof;3 Perhaps it be that they will hearken, and return every man from his evil way, that I may bethink me of the evil, which I purpose to do unto them, because of the wrongfulness of their doings.4 And thou shalt say unto them, Thus hath said the Lord, if ye will not hearken unto me, to walk in my law, which I have set before you,5 To hearken unto the words of my servants the prophets, whom I send unto you, yea, making them rise up early, and sending them, while ye have not hearkened:6 Then will I render this house like Shiloh, and this city will I render a curse unto all the nations of the earth.7 And the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord:8 And it came to pass, when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak unto all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people seized on him, saying, Thou shalt surely die.9 Why hast thou prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, Like Shiloh shall this house be, and this city shall be ruined, left without an inhabitant? And all the people assembled themselves against Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.10 But when the princes of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king’s house unto the house of the Lord, and sat down at the entrance of the new gate of the Lord’s house.11 Then said the priests and the prophets unto the princes and unto all the people, as followeth, This man deserveth the punishment of death; for he hath prophesied against this city, as ye have heard with your own ears.12 Then said Jeremiah unto all the princes and unto all the people, as followeth, The Lord hath sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that ye have heard.13 But now amend your ways and your doings, and hearken to the voice of the Lord your God: and the Lord will bethink him of the evil that he hath spoken against you.14 As for me, behold, I am in your hand: do with me as seemeth good and just in your eyes.15 But know ye for certain, that if ye put me to death, ye will surely place the guilt of innocent blood upon yourselves, and upon this city, and upon its inhabitants; for in truth hath the Lord sent me unto you to speak in your ears all these words.16 Then said the princes and all the people unto the priests and to the prophets, This man is not deserving the punishment of death; for in the name of the Lord our God hath he spoken unto us.17 And then rose up certain men of the elders of the land, and said to all the assembly of the people, as followeth,18 Michah the Morashthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah the king of Judah. and said to all the people of Judah, as followeth, Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, Zion shall be ploughed up like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruins, and the mountain of the house, woody high–places.19 Did Hezekiah the king of Judah and all Judah attempt to put him to death? behold, he did fear the Lord, and besought the Lord, and the Lord bethought him of the evil which he had spoken against them. And shall we bring a great wickedness on our souls?20 And there was also a man that prophesied in the name of the Lord, Uriyah the son of Shema’yahu of Kiryath–ye’arim, who prophesied against this city and against this land in accordance with all the words of Jeremiah;21 And when king Jehoyakim, with all his mighty men, and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death; but when Uriyahu heard it, he was afraid, and fled, and arrived in Egypt;22 But king Jehoyakim sent some men into Egypt, namely, Elnathan the son of ‘Achbor, and some men with him into Egypt:23 And they fetched Uriyahu out of Egypt, and brought him unto king Jehoyakim, who slew him with the sword, and cast his dead body upon the graves of the common people.24 But the hand of Achikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, so as not to give him up into the hand of the people to put him to death.
