1 Eis a mensagem que o profeta Jeremias enviou a Baruc, filho de Néria, quando este escreveu todos estes oráculos, ditados pelo profeta, no quarto ano do reinado de Joaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá:2 Eis o que diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel, a teu respeito, Baruc:3 tu exclamas: desgraçado de mim, porque o Senhor acumula sobre mim tristezas e dores! Desfaço-me em gemidos e não encontro repouso.4 Eis o que lhe dirás: oráculo do Senhor: vou destruir o que havia construído; arrancar o que havia plantado e isso em toda esta terra.5 E tu reclamarias para ti grandes favores? Não os peças, porque sobre todas as criaturas vou fazer recair o flagelo _ oráculo do Senhor. Mas, conservar-te-ei a vida, como espólio, em todos os lugares para aonde fores.

1 The word which Jeremiah the prophet spoke unto Baruch the son of Neriyah, when he wrote these words in a book out of the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoyakim the son of Josiah the king of Judah, saying,2 Thus hath said the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning thee, O Baruch:3 Thou didst say, Woe is me now! for the Lord hath added grief to my pain; I am wearied in my sighing, and rest have I not found;4 Thus shalt thou say unto him, Thus hath the Lord said, Behold, what I have built will I pull down, and what I have planted I will pluck up; and so it is with this whole land.5 And wouldst thou indeed seek great things for thyself? seek them not; for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the Lord; but I will give thy life unto thee as a booty in all the places whither thou mayest go.
