1 Yahweh’s angel came up from Gilgal to Bochim. He said, "I brought you out of Egypt, and have brought you to the land which I swore to give your fathers. I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you. 2 You shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land. You shall break down their altars.’ But you have not listened to my voice. Why have you done this? 3 Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be in your sides, and their gods will be a snare to you.’"

4 When Yahweh’s angel spoke these words to all the children of Israel, the people lifted up their voice and wept. 5 They called the name of that place Bochim,*2:5 "Bochim" means "weepers". and they sacrificed there to Yahweh. 6 Now when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel each went to his inheritance to possess the land. 7 The people served Yahweh all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of Yahweh that he had worked for Israel. 8 Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Yahweh, died, being one hundred ten years old. 9 They buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath Heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash. 10 After all that generation were gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who didn’t know Yahweh, nor the work which he had done for Israel. 11 The children of Israel did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and served the Baals. 12 They abandoned Yahweh, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them; and they provoked Yahweh to anger. 13 They abandoned Yahweh, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth. 14 Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of raiders who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies. 15 Wherever they went out, Yahweh’s hand was against them for evil, as Yahweh had spoken, and as Yahweh had sworn to them; and they were very distressed. 16 Yahweh raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those who plundered them. 17 Yet they didn’t listen to their judges; for they prostituted themselves to other gods, and bowed themselves down to them. They quickly turned away from the way in which their fathers walked, obeying Yahweh’s commandments. They didn’t do so. 18 When Yahweh raised up judges for them, then Yahweh was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for it grieved Yahweh because of their groaning by reason of those who oppressed them and troubled them. 19 But when the judge was dead, they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers in following other gods to serve them and to bow down to them. They didn’t cease what they were doing, or give up their stubborn ways. 20 Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel; and he said, "Because this nation transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not listened to my voice, 21 I also will no longer drive out any of the nations that Joshua left when he died from before them; 22 that by them I may test Israel, to see if they will keep Yahweh’s way to walk therein, as their fathers kept it, or not." 23 So Yahweh left those nations, without driving them out hastily. He didn’t deliver them into Joshua’s hand.

Herrens ängel i Bokim

1 *1 Mos 15:18, 17:7f, 5 Mos 29:14f.Herrens ängel kom från Gilgal upp till Bokim och sade: "Jag förde er upp ur Egypten och in i det land som jag med ed hade lovat ge era fäder, och jag sade: Jag ska aldrig bryta mitt förbund med er. 2 *2 Mos 23:32f, 34:12f, 4 Mos 33:52f, 5 Mos 7:2f, 12:3. Och ni ska inte sluta förbund med detta lands invånare, ni ska bryta ner deras altaren.

Men ni har inte lyssnat till min röst. Vad har ni gjort? 3 *5 Mos 7:16, Jos 23:13. Därför säger jag nu: Jag kommer inte att driva bort dem framför er, utan de ska tränga er i sidorna och deras gudar ska bli en snara för er."

4 När Herrens ängel hade sagt detta till Israels alla barn, brast de i gråt. 5 De kallade platsen Bokim.*2:5BokimBetyder "de gråtande". Och de offrade där åt Herren.

Avfallet efter Josuas död

6 *Jos 24:28. När Josua sände i väg folket, gick Israels barn var och en till sin arvedel för att ta landet i besittning. 7 *Jos 24:31. Folket tjänade Herren så länge Josua levde och så länge de äldste levde, de som var kvar efter Josua och hade sett alla de storverk som Herren hade gjort för Israel. 8 *Jos 24:29f. Och Herrens tjänare Josua, Nuns son, dog när han var hundratio år gammal. 9 Man begravde honom på det område som var hans arvedel, i Timnat-Heres*2:9Timnat-HeresAlternativ form för Josuas hemstad Timnat-Sera (jfr Jos 19:50, 24:30). i Efraims bergsbygd norr om berget Gaash. 10 *5 Mos 31:16. Och hela den generationen samlades till sina fäder.

Då växte en annan generation upp efter dem, en som inte kände Herren eller de gärningar som han hade gjort för Israel. 11 *4 Mos 25:3, Dom 8:33, 2 Kung 1:2, 6. Och Israels barn gjorde det som var ont i Herrens ögon och tjänade baalerna. 12 De övergav Herren, sina fäders Gud som hade fört dem ut ur Egyptens land, och följde andra gudar, gudarna hos folken som bodde omkring dem. Dem tillbad de och väckte därmed Herrens vrede.

13 *Dom 10:6f, 1 Kung 11:5, 33, 2 Kung 23:13. Så övergav de Herren och tjänade Baal och astarterna.*2:13Baal och astarternaBaal ("herre") var den främste av de kananeiska gudarna. Astarte var den kvinnliga fruktbarhets- och modergudinnan. Pluralformerna "baalerna" (vers 11) och "astarterna" syftar troligen på lokala variationer.14 *Dom 3:8, 4:2, Ps 44:13, 106:41, Jes 50:1. Då upptändes Herrens vrede mot Israel, och han gav dem i händerna på rövare som plundrade dem. Han sålde dem till deras fiender runt omkring, och de kunde inte stå emot sina fiender längre. 15 *3 Mos 26:17, 33, 5 Mos 28:15f. Närhelst de drog ut var Herrens hand emot dem till deras olycka, så som Herren hade sagt och så som Herren hade lovat dem med ed. Och de var i stor nöd.

16 *Dom 3:9f, 15. Då lät Herren domare uppstå, som frälste dem ur deras plundrares hand. 17 Men de lyssnade inte heller till sina domare, utan höll sig trolöst till andra gudar och tillbad dem. De vek snabbt av från den väg som deras fäder hade vandrat i lydnad för Herrens bud och gjorde inte som de.

18 *Dom 10:16. När Herren lät domare uppstå bland dem, var han med domaren och frälste dem ur deras fienders hand så länge domaren levde. Herren förbarmade sig när de jämrade sig över sina förtryckare och plågare. 19 Men när domaren dog, vände de sig bort igen och blev ännu mer fördärvade än sina fäder. De följde andra gudar och tjänade och tillbad dem. De avstod inte från sina gärningar och sin hårdnackade hållning.

20 Därför upptändes Herrens vrede mot Israel, och han sade: "Detta folk har brutit mot mitt förbund som jag fastställde för deras fäder, och de har inte velat lyssna till min röst. 21 Därför ska jag inte längre driva bort för dem ett enda av de folk som Josua lämnade kvar när han dog. 22 *Dom 3:4. Genom dem ska jag sätta Israel på prov. Kommer de att hålla sig till Herrens väg och vandra på den, som deras fäder gjorde, eller inte?" 23 Alltså lät Herren dessa folk bli kvar. Han fördrev dem inte genast, och han gav dem inte i Josuas hand.
