1 The message that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch the son of Neriah, when he wrote these words in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying, 2 "The LORD, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch: 3 ‘You said, "Woe is me now! For the LORD has added sorrow to my pain! I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest."’

4 "You shall tell him, the LORD says: ‘Behold, that which I have built, I will break down, and that which I have planted I will pluck up; and this in the whole land. 5 Do you seek great things for yourself? Don’t seek them; for, behold, I will bring evil on all flesh,’ says the LORD; ‘but I will let you escape with your life wherever you go.’"

1 Esta é a mensagem que Jeremias transmitiu a Baruque, no quarto ano do reinado de Joaquim (filho de Josias), depois dele ter escrito todas as mensagens que Jeremias lhe tinha ditado:

2 Ó Baruque, o Senhor Deus de Israel diz-te:

3 Disseste - Ai de mim! Não tenho eu já bastantes tristezas? E agora o Senhor ainda me acrescenta mais! Estou já cansado do meu próprio gemido e não acho descanso. Portanto diz assim a Baruque: O Senhor tem isto a dizer-te - Destruirei esta nação que eu próprio construí. Derrubarei o que eu próprio estabeleci.

5 Estarás tu a procurar grandes coisas para ti mesmo? Não faças isso! Porque ainda que venha a trazer grandes males sobre todo este povo, proteger-te-ei onde quer que vás. Será esta a tua recompensa.
