1 The LORD’s word that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh struck Gaza.

2 The LORD says:

"Behold, waters rise up out of the north,

and will become an overflowing stream,

and will overflow the land and all that is therein,

the city and those who dwell therein.

The men will cry,

and all the inhabitants of the land will wail.

3 At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong ones,

at the rushing of his chariots,

at the rumbling of his wheels,

the fathers don’t look back to their children

for feebleness of hands;

4 because of the day that comes to destroy all the Philistines,

to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every helper who remains;

for the LORD will destroy the Philistines,

the remnant of the isle of Caphtor.

5 Baldness has come on Gaza;

Ashkelon is brought to nothing,

the remnant of their valley:

how long will you cut yourself?

6 "‘You sword of the LORD, how long will it be before you are quiet?

Put yourself back into your scabbard;

rest, and be still.’

7 "How can you be quiet,

since the LORD has given you a command?

Against Ashkelon, and against the seashore,

there he has appointed it."

1 Esta é a mensagem que Deus deu a Jeremias respeitante aos filisteus de Gaza, antes da cidade ter sido capturada pelo exército egípcio.

2 Diz o Senhor: Aproxima-se, vindo do norte, uma imensa cheia, que cobrirá toda a terra dos filisteus; destruirá as suas povoações com tudo o que nelas existe. O povo gritará de terror, e toda a terra chorará. Ouçam o ruído estrepitoso das patas dos cavalos, e o barulho das rodas dos carros de combate correndo velozmente. Até aqueles que são pais fugirão esbaforidos, sem deitar sequer um relance de olhos para trás, sobre os filhos, que ficam desprotegidos e sem ajuda. Porque chegou o tempo em que os filisteus e os seus aliados de Sidom e de Tiro serão arrasados. Pois o Senhor vai destruir os filisteus, esses colonos que vieram da ilha de Caftor. As cidades de Gaza e de Asquelom serão arrasadas, sem que nada fique de pé, assim como o resto do seu vale. Como se vão lamentar!

6 Ó espada do Senhor, quando ficarás tu novamente em repouso? Volta de novo para a bainha; descansa e mantém-te tranquila! Mas, de facto, como poderá ela manter-se tranquila quando foi o próprio Senhor quem lhe mandou fazer este recado? A cidade de Asquelom e os que vivem à beira mar serão destruídos.
