1 "Flee for safety, you children of Benjamin, out of the middle of Jerusalem! Blow the shofar in Tekoa and raise up a signal on Beth Haccherem, for evil looks out from the north with a great destruction. 2 I will cut off the beautiful and delicate one, the daughter of Zion. 3 Shepherds with their flocks will come to her. They will pitch their tents against her all around. They will feed everyone in his place."

4 "Prepare war against her! Arise! Let’s go up at noon. Woe to us! For the day declines, for the shadows of the evening are stretched out. 5 Arise! Let’s go up by night, and let’s destroy her palaces." 6 For the LORD of Hosts said, "Cut down trees, and cast up a mound against Jerusalem. This is the city to be visited. She is wholly oppression within herself. 7 As a well produces its waters, so she produces her wickedness. Violence and destruction is heard in her. Sickness and wounds are continually before me. 8 Be instructed, Jerusalem, lest my soul be alienated from you, lest I make you a desolation, an uninhabited land."

9 The LORD of Hosts says, "They will thoroughly glean the remnant of Israel like a vine. Turn again your hand as a grape gatherer into the baskets."

10 To whom should I speak and testify, that they may hear? Behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they can’t listen. Behold, the LORD’s word has become a reproach to them. They have no delight in it. 11 Therefore I am full of the LORD’s wrath. I am weary with holding it in.

"Pour it out on the children in the street,

and on the assembly of young men together;

for even the husband with the wife will be taken,

the aged with him who is full of days.

12 Their houses will be turned to others,

their fields and their wives together;

for I will stretch out my hand on the inhabitants of the land, says the LORD."

13 "For from their least even to their greatest, everyone is given to covetousness.

From the prophet even to the priest, everyone deals falsely.

14 They have healed also the hurt of my people superficially,

saying, ‘Peace, peace!’ when there is no peace.

15 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination?

No, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush.

Therefore they will fall among those who fall.

When I visit them, they will be cast down," says the LORD.

16 The LORD says, "Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, ‘Where is the good way?’ and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ 17 I set watchmen over you, saying, ‘Listen to the sound of the shofar!’ But they said, ‘We will not listen!’ 18 Therefore hear, you nations, and know, congregation, what is among them. 19 Hear, earth! Behold, I will bring evil on this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not listened to my words; and as for my law, they have rejected it. 20 To what purpose does frankincense from Sheba come to me, and the sweet cane from a far country? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable, and your sacrifices are not pleasing to me."

21 Therefore The LORD says, "Behold, I will lay stumbling blocks before this people. The fathers and the sons together will stumble against them. The neighbor and his friend will perish." 22 The LORD says, "Behold, a people comes from the north country. A great nation will be stirred up from the uttermost parts of the earth. 23 They take hold of bow and spear. They are cruel, and have no mercy. Their voice roars like the sea, and they ride on horses, everyone set in array, as a man to the battle, against you, daughter of Zion."

24 We have heard its report. Our hands become feeble. Anguish has taken hold of us, and pains as of a woman in labor. 25 Don’t go out into the field or walk by the way; for the sword of the enemy and terror are on every side. 26 Daughter of my people, clothe yourself with sackcloth, and wallow in ashes! Mourn, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation, for the destroyer will suddenly come on us.

27 "I have made you a tester of metals and a fortress among my people, that you may know and try their way. 28 They are all grievous rebels, going around to slander. They are bronze and iron. All of them deal corruptly. 29 The bellows blow fiercely. The lead is consumed in the fire. In vain they go on refining, for the wicked are not plucked away. 30 Men will call them rejected silver, because the LORD has rejected them."

1 Foge, povo de Benjamim, foge para poupares a vida! Foge de Jerusalém! Toquem o alarme em Tecoa; enviem um sinal de fumo em Bete-Haquerem; avisem toda a gente de que um exército poderoso vem a caminho do norte para destruir esta nação!l3 Desprotegida como uma rapariga, és formosa e delicada - e, contudo, condenada. Maus pastores te rodearão. Acampar-se-ão à volta da cidade; repartirão as tuas pastagens pelos seus rebanhos.-4 Vejam-nos a prepararem-se para a batalha. Começou ao meio-dia. Durante toda a tarde se embraveceram, até caírem as sombras da noite.5 Vamos, dizem eles, ataquemos de noite e destruamos os seus palácios!6 Porque o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais lhes disse: Cortem as suas árvores, para construir tranqueiras e abater com elas os muros de Jerusalém. Esta é uma cidade a ser punida, porque tudo que há nela é só perversidade. Jorra dela maldade como água duma fonte! As suas ruas ecoam com os ruídos de violência; as suas enfermidades e as suas chagas estão sempre patentes aos meus olhos.8 Muda ó Jerusalém: Se não quiseres ouvir, apartar-me-ei de ti e a terra ficará assolada e vazia. Desastres sobre desastres cairão sobre ti. E até os poucos que ficaram em Israel serão colhidos em posteriores revoadas de ataques, diz o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais; porque tal como o vindimador dá uma segunda volta pela vinha para apanhar cachos que tenham ficado esquecidos ou escondidos, assim também o meu povo será destruído novamente. Mas quem é que me ouve quando os advirto? Têm os ouvidos fechados; recusam ouvir. A palavra de Deus irrita-os; não têm nela nenhum interesse.11 É por causa disto tudo que estou cheio do furor do Senhor contra eles. Estou cansado de o conter. Derramá-lo-ei sobre Jerusalém, até sobre os meninos que brincam nas ruas; sobre os ajuntamentos de jovens, sobre os maridos e as esposas e sobre os velhos.12 Os seus inimigos viverão nos lares deles e ocuparão os seus campos e as suas mulheres. Porque hei-de castigar a gente desta terra, diz o Senhor. São cobiçosos e mentirosos, desde o mais humilde até ao mais importante! Desde o profeta ao sacerdote todos se conduzem perfidamente. Não se pode tratar uma ferida fazendo contas que não é uma ferida e que está tudo são! Pois é o que fazem os sacerdotes e os profetas, que se põem a dar segurança de paz, dizendo: Paz! Paz!, quando não há paz; há mas é guerra!15 Acaso terá ficado o meu povo envergonhado quando cometeram a abominação de adorar ídolos? Não, de maneira nenhuma! Antes pelo contrário! Eles sabem lá o que é corar de vergonha! Por isso hão-de cair entre os que forem assassinados. Hão-de cair sob a minha ira.16 Mesmo assim o Senhor insiste convosco: Perguntem qual é a melhor estrada, o caminho de justiça, essas veredas antigas por onde costumavam andar. Vão por elas, e acharão repouso para as vossas almas. Mas vocês respondem: Não, não é nessa direcção que quero ir; não me interessa esse caminho! Pus sentinelas vigiando sobre vocês, as quais vos alertaram: Estejam atentos ao toque da trombeta! Ela vai avisar-vos quando a aflição chegar. Mas a vossa resposta foi: Não! Não estamos interessados em dar atenção a isso!18 Esta é pois a minha sentença contra o meu povo e ouçam bem, terras distantes, assim como Jerusalém. Que toda a Terra ouça isto: Trarei o mal sobre este povo; será isso o fruto do seu pecado, visto que não querem ouvir-me. Rejeitam a minha lei20 De nada interessa agora pôr-se a queimar incenso aromático de Sabá, na minha presença! Fariam melhor em poupar esses perfumes caros! Não posso aceitar essas ofertas que para mim não cheiram a nada; nada significam. Farei pois do caminho do meu povo uma espécie de pista de obstáculos, ou uma estrada minada por guerrilheiros: nela serão apanhados e ficarão, tanto os pais como os filhos; vizinhos e amigos todos ali perecerão. O Senhor Deus diz: Vejam esses exércitos que avançam desde o norte - uma grande nação se prepara para vir sobre vocês. São gente cruel, sem piedade; armados até aos dentes, convenientemente preparados para a guerra. O barulho que faz o seu exército é como o rugir do mar.24 Temos ouvido da fama desses exércitos, e ficámos sem pinga de sangue, com o terror. Terror e sofrimento nos apanharam e nos tiram as forças, como se fôssemos mulheres na angústia e no aperto do parto. Não saíam para os campos! Não fujam pelas estradas! Porque o inimigo está por toda a parte, pronto a matar. O terror vos apanhará a cada esquina, a cada curva da estrada.26 Ó Jerusalém, o orgulho do meu povo, põe roupa de luto, senta-te sobre cinzas e chora amargamente como se fosse pelo teu único filho. Porque inesperadamente batalhões de soldados cairão sobre ti para destruir.27 Jeremias, pus-te como se fosses um aferidor de metais, para que pudesses testar o meu povo e determinar o seu verdadeiro valor. Ouve as falas dele e observa o que fazem28 Não é mesmo verdade que são os piores dos rebeldes, cheios duma linguagem perversa contra o Senhor? São insolentes, são duros como o ferro e o bronze.29 O fole sopra furiosamente; o fogo refinador está cada vez mais ateado e quente; mas o facto é que não consegue depurá-los, pela simples razão de que não há pureza nenhuma neles.30 Uma só etiqueta lhes convém: Impuro. Metal rejeitado. E pô-los-ei de parte.
