1 mapa And the men of Ephraim said to him, Why hast thou treated us thus, that thou calledst us not when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? and they chid with him sharply. És mondának az Efraim férfiai néki: Miért cselekedted azt mi velünk, hogy el nem hívtál minket, mikor a Midián ellen való hadakozásra indultál? És erõsen feddõzének vele.
2 mapa And he said to them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer? Õ pedig monda nékik: Vajjon cselekedtem-é én olyan dolgot, mint ti? Nem többet ér-é Efraim szõlõmezgerlése, mint Abiézer [egész] szüretje?
3 mapa God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then, when he had said that, their anger towards him abated. Kezetekbe adta az Isten Midiánnak fejedelmeit, Orebet és Zéebet; hát mit cselekedhettem én olyat, mint ti?! Akkor lecsendesedék az õ felháborodott lelkök, mikor e beszédet mondotta vala.
4 mapa And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them. Mikor pedig Gedeon a Jordánhoz ére, átkele azzal a háromszáz férfiúval, a kik vele valának, az üldözéstõl kifáradottan.
5 mapa And he said to the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread to the people that follow me: for they are faint, and I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian. És monda a Sukkót férfiainak: Adjatok, kérlek, e népnek, mely engem követ, kenyeret, mert fáradtak, én pedig ûzöm Zébát és Sálmunáht, Midiánnak királyait.
6 mapa And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread to thy army? És mondának Sukkót elõljárói: Zébának és Sálmunáhnak öklét már kezedben tartod-é, hogy kenyeret adjunk a te seregednek?
7 And Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers. Gedeon pedig monda: Ha kezembe adja az Úr Zébát és Sálmunáht, a pusztának tüskéivel és csalánjaival csépelem meg testeteket.
8 mapa And he went up thence to Penuel, and spoke to them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him. És felmenvén onnan Pénuelbe, hasonlóképen szóla azoknak is, és Pénuel férfiai [épen] úgy feleltek néki, a mint feleltek volt a Sukkót férfiai.
9 mapa And he spoke also to the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower. És szóla a Pénuel férfiainak is, mondván: Mikor békességben visszatérek, lerontom ezt a tornyot.
10 mapa Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell a hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword. Zéba pedig és Sálmunáh Kárkorban valának, és az õ seregök velök, mintegy tizenötezeren, mind a kik megmaradtak a Napkeletieknek egész táborából. Az elesettek [száma] százhúszezer fegyverfogható férfiú [volt.]
11 mapa And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was secure. És felméne Gedeon a sátorban lakók útján keletre Nobahtól és Jogbehától, és szétverte a tábort, pedig a tábor biztonságban [érezte magát].
12 mapa And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host. És Zéba és Sálmunáh elfutottak; de õ utánok ment, és elfogta a Midián két királyát: Zébát és Sálmunáht, és szétszórta az egész tábort.
13 mapa And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun had risen, Mikor pedig Gedeon, a Joás fia, visszatért a harczból a Heresz hágójától:
14 mapa And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described to him the princes of Succoth, and its elders, even seventy seven men. Megfogott egy gyermeket a sukkótbeliek közül, és tudakozódott tõle. Ez pedig felírta néki Sukkótnak elõljáróit és véneit, hetvenhét férfiút.
15 mapa And he came to the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye upbraided me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread to thy men that are weary? Mikor aztán a Sukkót férfiaihoz ment vala, monda: Ímhol Zéba és Sálmunáh, a kik miatt gúnyolódtatok velem, mondván: Vajjon Zéba és Sálmunáh öklét már kezedben tartod-é, hogy kenyeret adjunk kifáradott embereidnek?
16 mapa And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness, and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth. És elõfogá a város véneit, és a pusztának töviseit és csalánjait [vévén], megtanítá azokkal Sukkótnak férfiait.
17 mapa And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city. Azután Pénuel tornyát rontá le, és a város férfiait ölte meg.
18 mapa Then said he to Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king. És monda Zébának és Sálmunáhnak: Milyenek voltak azok a férfiak, a kiket a Thábor [hegyén] megöltetek? Õk pedig mondának: Mint a milyen te vagy, olyanok voltak õk is, és mindenik olyan arczú, mint egy-egy királyfi.
19 And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the LORD liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you. És monda: Az én atyámfiai, az én anyámnak fiai voltak azok. Él az Úr! ha életben hagytátok volna õket, én sem ölnélek meg titeket!
20 And he said to Jether his first-born, Arise, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth. És monda Jéthernek, az õ elsõszülöttjének: Kelj fel, öld meg õket. De a fiú nem húzta ki kardját, mert fél vala, mivelhogy még gyermek vala.
21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels' necks. És monda Zéba és Sálmunáh: Kelj fel te és [te] ölj meg minket, mert a milyen a férfiú, olyan az õ ereje. És felkele Gedeon, és megölé Zébát és Sálmunáht, és elvevé az õ tevéiknek nyakán levõ ékességeket.
22 mapa Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian. És mondának az Izráel férfiai Gedeonnak: Uralkodjál felettünk te és a te fiad és a te fiadnak fia, mert megszabadítottál bennünket a Midiániták kezébõl.
23 And Gideon said to them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you. És monda nékik Gedeon: Én nem uralkodom felettetek, sem az én fiam nem fog uralkodni rajtatok. Az Úr uralkodik ti felettetek!
24 And Gideon said to them, I would desire a request of you, that you would give me every man the ear-rings of his prey. (For they had golden ear-rings, because they were Ishmaelites.) Azután monda nékik Gedeon: Egyet kívánok [csak] tõletek, hogy adja nékem mindenikõtök a zsákmányul ejtett fülön függõket; mert arany fülön függõik voltak azoknak, mivelhogy Izmaeliták valának.
25 And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and cast into it every man the ear-rings of his prey. És mondának: Örömest néked adjuk. És leterítettek egy ruhát, és mindenki arra dobá a fülön függõket, melyeket prédául ejtett.
26 mapa And the weight of the golden ear-rings that he requested, was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; besides ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were about their camels' necks. Az arany fülön függõknek pedig, a melyeket elkért, súlya ezerhétszáz arany [siklus] volt, amaz ékességeken, függõkön és bíborruhákon kívül, a melyek a Midián királyain voltak, és az aranylánczok nélkül, a melyek tevéik nyakán valának.
27 mapa And Gideon made of it an ephod, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither astray after it: which thing became a snare to Gideon, and to his house. És készíte abból Gedeon efódot, és helyhezteté azt a maga városában, Ofrában, és ott paráználkodott azután az egész Izráel, és lõn [ez] Gedeonnak és házanépének tõrbeejtésére.
28 mapa Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they raised their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon. Így aláztattak meg a Midiániták az Izráel fiai elõtt, és nem is emelték fel azután már fejüket, és megnyugovék a föld negyven esztendeig Gedeon idejében.
29 And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house. És [haza]tért Jerubbaál, a Joás fia, és megtelepedett otthon.
30 And Gideon had seventy sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives. És Gedeonnak volt hetven fia, kik az õ ágyékából származtak, mert sok felesége volt néki.
31 mapa And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bore him a son, whose name he called Abimelech. És az õ ágyasa is, a ki Sikemben volt, szült néki egy fiat, és nevezé azt Abiméleknek.
32 mapa And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulcher of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites. És meghala Gedeon, a Joás fia, késõ vénségében, és eltemetteték atyjának, Joásnak sírjába, Ofrában, Abiezer [városában.
33 And it came to pass as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went astray after Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god. Lõn pedig, hogy mikor meghalt Gedeon, elfordulának az Izráel fiai [az Úrtól], és a Baálokkal paráználkodának, és a Baál-Beritet tevék istenökké.
34 And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side: És nem emlékezének meg az Izráel fiai az Úrról, az õ Istenökrõl, a ki õket megszabadította minden ellenségeik kezébõl köröskörül.
35 Neither showed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shown to Israel. És nem cselekedének irgalmasságot a Jerubbaál Gedeon házával mind ama jók szerint, a melyeket õ tett vala az Izráellel.
