1 Melhor é o pobre que anda na sua integridade
do que o perverso de lábios e tolo.
2 Não é bom proceder sem refletir,
e peca quem é precipitado.
3 A estultícia do homem perverte o seu caminho,
mas é contra o Senhor que o seu coração se ira.
4 As riquezas multiplicam os amigos;
mas, ao pobre, o seu próprio amigo o deixa.
5 A falsa testemunha não fica impune,
e o que profere mentiras não escapa.
6 Ao generoso, muitos o adulam,
e todos são amigos do que dá presentes.
7 Se os irmãos do pobre o aborrecem,
quanto mais se afastarão dele os seus amigos!
Corre após eles com súplicas, mas não os alcança.
8 O que adquire entendimento ama a sua alma;
o que conserva a inteligência acha o bem.
9 A falsa testemunha não fica impune,
e o que profere mentiras perece.
10 Ao insensato não convém a vida regalada,
quanto menos ao escravo dominar os príncipes!
11 A discrição do homem o torna longânimo,
e sua glória é perdoar as injúrias.
12 Como o bramido do leão, assim é a indignação do rei;
mas seu favor é como o orvalho sobre a erva.
13 O filho insensato é a desgraça do pai,
e um gotejar contínuo, as contenções da esposa.
14 A casa e os bens vêm como herança dos pais;
mas do Senhor, a esposa prudente.
15 A preguiça faz cair em profundo sono,
e o ocioso vem a padecer fome.
16 O que guarda o mandamento guarda a sua alma;
mas o que despreza os seus caminhos, esse morre.
17 Quem se compadece do pobre ao Senhor empresta,
e este lhe paga o seu benefício.
18 Castiga a teu filho, enquanto há esperança,
mas não te excedas a ponto de matá-lo.
19 Homem de grande ira tem de sofrer o dano;
porque, se tu o livrares, virás ainda a fazê-lo de novo.
20 Ouve o conselho e recebe a instrução,
para que sejas sábio nos teus dias por vir.
21 Muitos propósitos há no coração do homem,
mas o desígnio do Senhor permanecerá.
22 O que torna agradável o homem é a sua misericórdia;
o pobre é preferível ao mentiroso.
23 O temor do Senhor conduz à vida;
aquele que o tem ficará satisfeito, e mal nenhum o visitará.
24 O preguiçoso mete a mão no prato
e não quer ter o trabalho de a levar à boca.
25 Quando ferires ao escarnecedor, o simples aprenderá a prudência;
repreende ao sábio, e crescerá em conhecimento.
26 O que maltrata a seu pai ou manda embora a sua mãe
filho é que envergonha e desonra.
27 Filho meu, se deixas de ouvir a instrução,
desviar-te-ás das palavras do conhecimento.
28 A testemunha de Belial escarnece da justiça,
e a boca dos perversos devora a iniquidade.
29 Preparados estão os juízos para os escarnecedores
e os açoites, para as costas dos insensatos.
1 Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity than he that is perverse in his lips and a fool at the same time.
2 Also, that the soul be without knowledge is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.
3 The foolishness of man perverteth his way; and his heart fretteth against the LORD.
4 Wealth addeth many friends; but as for the poor, his friend separateth himself from him.
5 A false witness shall not be unpunished; and he that breatheth forth lies shall not escape.
6 Many will entreat the favour of the liberal man; and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.
7 All the brethren of the poor do hate him; how much more do his friends go far from him! He that pursueth words, they turn against him.
8 He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul; he that keepeth understanding shall find good.
9 A false witness shall not be unpunished; and he that breatheth forth lies shall perish.
10 Luxury is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.
11 It is the discretion of a man to be slow to anger, and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.
12 The king's wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.
13 A foolish son is the calamity of his father; and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.
14 House and riches are the inheritance of fathers; but a prudent wife is from the LORD.
15 Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and the idle soul shall suffer hunger.
16 He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his soul; but he that despiseth His ways shall die.
17 He that is gracious unto the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and his good deed will He repay unto him.
18 Chasten thy son, for there is hope; but set not thy heart on his destruction.
19 A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment; for if thou interpose, thou wilt add thereto.
20 Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.
21 There are many devices in a man's heart; but the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.
22 The lust of a man is his shame; and a poor man is better than a liar.
23 The fear of the LORD tendeth to life; and he that hath it shall abide satisfied, he shall not be visited with evil.
24 The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish, and will not so much as bring it back to his mouth.
25 When thou smitest a scorner, the simple will become prudent; and when one that hath understanding is reproved, he will understand knowledge.
26 A son that dealeth shamefully and reproachfully will despoil his father, and chase away his mother.
27 Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.
28 An ungodly witness mocketh at right; and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.
29 Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.
