1 Thus the Lord Jehovah showed me: and, behold, he formed locusts in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings. 2 And it came to pass that, when they made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord Jehovah, forgive, I beseech thee: how shall Jacob stand? for he is small. 3 Jehovah repented concerning this: It shall not be, saith Jehovah.

4 Thus the Lord Jehovah showed me: and, behold, the Lord Jehovah called to contend by fire; and it devoured the great deep, and would have eaten up the land. 5 Then said I, O Lord Jehovah, cease, I beseech thee: how shall Jacob stand? for he is small. 6 Jehovah repented concerning this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord Jehovah.

7 Thus he showed me: and, behold, the Lord stood beside a wall made by a plumb-line, with a plumb-line in his hand. 8 And Jehovah said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumb-line. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumb-line in the midst of my people Israel; I will not again pass by them any more; 9 and the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

10 Then Amaziah the priest of Beth-el sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words. 11 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land. 12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thou away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there: 13 but prophesy not again any more at Beth-el; for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a royal house.

14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was a herdsman, and a dresser of sycomore-trees: 15 and Jehovah took me from following the flock, and Jehovah said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel. 16 Now therefore hear thou the word of Jehovah: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac; 17 therefore thus saith Jehovah: Thy wife shall be a harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou thyself shalt die in a land that is unclean, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land.

Iată, făcea niște lăcuste în clipa când începea să crească otava; era otava după cositul împăratului. 2 Și, după ce au mâncat ele cu desăvârșire toată iarba din țară, am zis: „Doamne Dumnezeule, iartă! Cum ar putea să stea Iacov în picioare*Is. 51:19. Vers. 5.? Căci este așa de slab!" 3 Atunci, Domnul S-a căit de lucrul acesta: „Nu se va întâmpla una ca aceasta", a zis Domnul. 4 Domnul*Deut. 32:36. Vers. 6.Iona 3:10.Iac. 5:16. Dumnezeu mi-a trimis vedenia aceasta: Iată, Domnul Dumnezeu vestea pedeapsa prin foc și focul mânca adâncul cel mare și apucase și câmpia. 5 Eu am zis: „Doamne Dumnezeule, oprește! Cum ar putea să stea în picioare*Vers. 2,3. Iacov? Căci este așa de slab!" 6 Atunci, Domnul S-a căit și de lucrul acesta: „Nici una ca aceasta nu se va întâmpla", a zis Domnul Dumnezeu. 7 El mi-a trimis vedenia aceasta: Iată, Domnul stătea pe un zid făcut la cumpănă și avea o cumpănă în mână. 8 Domnul mi-a zis: „Ce vezi, Amos?" Eu am răspuns: „O cumpănă." Și Domnul a zis: „Iată, voi*2 Împ. 21:13.Is. 28:17;34:11.Plâng. 2:8. pune cumpăna în mijlocul poporului Meu Israel și nu-l*Cap. 8:2.Mica 7:18. voi mai ierta, 9 ci înălțimile*Gen. 26:23;46:1. Cap. 5:5;8:14. lui Isaac vor fi pustiite; sfintele locașuri ale lui Israel vor fi dărâmate și Mă voi ridica*2 Împ. 15:10. împotriva casei lui Ieroboam cu sabia." 10 Atunci, Amația, preotul din Betel*1 Împ. 12:32., a trimis să spună lui Ieroboam*2 Împ. 14:23., împăratul lui Israel: „Amos uneltește împotriva ta în mijlocul casei lui Israel; țara nu poate să sufere toate cuvintele lui! 11 Căci iată ce zice Amos: ‘Ieroboam va fi ucis de sabie, și Israel va fi dus în robie departe de țara sa!’" 12 Și Amația a zis lui Amos: „Pleacă, văzătorule, și fugi în țara lui Iuda! Mănâncă-ți pâinea acolo și acolo prorocește! 13 Dar nu mai proroci la Betel*Cap. 2:12., căci este*1 Împ. 12:32;13:1. un locaș sfânt al împăratului și este un templu al împărăției!" 14 Amos a răspuns lui Amația: „Eu nu sunt nici proroc, nici fiu*1 Împ. 20:35.2 Împ. 2:5;4:38;6:1. de proroc, ci sunt*Cap. 1:1.Zah. 13:5. păstor și strângător de smochine de Egipt. 15 Dar Domnul m-a luat de la oi și Domnul mi-a zis: ‘Du-te și prorocește poporului Meu Israel!’ 16 Ascultă acum Cuvântul Domnului, tu, care zici: ‘Nu proroci*Ezec. 21:2.Mica 2:6. împotriva lui Israel, nu vorbi împotriva casei lui Isaac!’ 17 Din pricina aceasta*Ier. 28:12;29:21,25,31,32., iată ce zice Domnul: ‘Nevastă-ta*Is. 13:16.Plâng. 5:11.Osea 4:13.Zah. 14:2. va curvi în cetate, fiii și fiicele tale vor cădea loviți de sabie, ogorul tău va fi împărțit cu frânghia de măsurat; tu însă vei muri într-un pământ necurat și Israel va fi dus în robie departe de țara lui!’"
