1 Now in the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king’s commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, on the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have rule over them (whereas it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them), 2 the Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, to lay hand on such as sought their hurt: and no man could withstand them; for the fear of them was fallen upon all the peoples. 3 And all the princes of the provinces, and the satraps, and the governors, and they that did the king’s business, helped the Jews; because the fear of Mordecai was fallen upon them. 4 For Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame went forth throughout all the provinces; for the man Mordecai waxed greater and greater. 5 And the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and with slaughter and destruction, and did what they would unto them that hated them. 6 And in Shushan the palace the Jews slew and destroyed five hundred men. 7 And Parshandatha, and Dalphon, and Aspatha, 8 and Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha, 9 and Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vaizatha, 10 the ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Jews’ enemy, slew they; but on the spoil they laid not their hand.

11 On that day the number of those that were slain in Shushan the palace was brought before the king. 12 And the king said unto Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of Haman; what then have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces! Now what is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: or what is thy request further? and it shall be done. 13 Then said Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews that are in Shushan to do to-morrow also according unto this day’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged upon the gallows. 14 And the king commanded it so to be done: and a decree was given out in Shushan; and they hanged Haman’s ten sons. 15 And the Jews that were in Shushan gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and slew three hundred men in Shushan; but on the spoil they laid not their hand. 16 And the other Jews that were in the king’s provinces gathered themselves together, and stood for their lives, and had rest from their enemies, and slew of them that hated them seventy and five thousand; but on the spoil they laid not their hand.

17 This was done on the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of the same they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness. 18 But the Jews that were in Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth day thereof, and on the fourteenth thereof; and on the fifteenth day of the same they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness. 19 Therefore do the Jews of the villages, that dwell in the unwalled towns, make the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another.

20 And Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters unto all the Jews that were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, both nigh and far, 21 to enjoin them that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day of the same, yearly, 22 as the days wherein the Jews had rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into a good day; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor. 23 And the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and as Mordecai had written unto them; 24 because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur, that is the lot, to consume them, and to destroy them; 25 but when the matter came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he had devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

26 Wherefore they called these days Purim, after the name of Pur. Therefore because of all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and that which had come unto them, 27 the Jews ordained, and took upon them, and upon their seed, and upon all such as joined themselves unto them, so that it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to the writing thereof, and according to the appointed time thereof, every year; 28 and that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the remembrance of them perish from their seed.

29 Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew, wrote with all authority to confirm this second letter of Purim. 30 And he sent letters unto all the Jews, to the hundred twenty and seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth, 31 to confirm these days of Purim in their appointed times, according as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had enjoined them, and as they had ordained for themselves and for their seed, in the matter of the fastings and their cry. 32 And the commandment of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the book.

Nimeni n-a putut să le stea împotrivă, căci frica*Cap. 8:17. de ei apucase pe toate popoarele! 3 Și toți mai-marii ținuturilor, căpeteniile oștirii, dregătorii, slujbașii împăratului au sprijinit pe iudei din pricina fricii pe care le-o insufla Mardoheu. 4 Căci Mardoheu era puternic în casa împăratului și faima lui se răspândea în toate ținuturile, pentru că ajungea din ce în ce mai puternic*2 Sam. 3:1.1 Cron. 11:9.Prov. 4:18.. 5 Iudeii au ucis cu lovituri de sabie pe toți vrăjmașii lor, i-au omorât și i-au prăpădit. Au făcut ce au vrut cu vrăjmașii lor. 6 În capitala Susa, iudeii au ucis și au prăpădit cinci sute de oameni 7 și au înjunghiat pe Parșandata, Dalfon, Aspata, 8 Porata, Adalia, Aridata, 9 Parmașta, Arizai, Aridai și Vaiezata, 10 cei zece*Cap. 5:11.Iov 18:19;27:13-15.Ps. 21:10. fii ai lui Haman, fiul lui Hamedata, vrăjmașul iudeilor. Dar n-au pus mâna*Cap. 8:11. pe averile lor. 11 În ziua aceea, numărul celor ce fuseseră uciși în capitala Susa a ajuns la cunoștința împăratului. 12 Și împăratul a zis împărătesei Estera: „Iudeii au ucis și au prăpădit în capitala Susa cinci sute de oameni și pe cei zece fii ai lui Haman. Ce vor fi făcut în celelalte ținuturi ale împăratului? Care-ți*Cap. 5:6;7:2. este cererea? Ea îți va fi împlinită. Ce mai dorești? Vei căpăta." 13 Estera a răspuns: „Dacă împăratul găsește cu cale, să fie îngăduit iudeilor care sunt la Susa să facă și mâine după*Cap. 8:11. porunca de azi și să spânzure*2 Sam. 21:6,9. pe lemn pe cei zece fii ai lui Haman." 14 Și împăratul a poruncit să se facă așa. Porunca a fost adusă la cunoștința poporului din Susa. Au spânzurat pe cei zece fii ai lui Haman. 15 Iudeii care se aflau în Susa s-au strâns*Vers. 2. Cap. 8:11. din nou în a paisprezecea zi a lunii Adar și au ucis în Susa trei sute de oameni. Dar n-au pus*Vers. 10. mâna pe averile lor. 16 Ceilalți iudei din celelalte ținuturi ale împăratului s-au strâns*Vers. 2. Cap. 8:11. și și-au apărat viața. Au căpătat astfel odihnă, scăpând de vrăjmașii lor, și au ucis șaptezeci și cinci de mii din cei ce le erau vrăjmași. Dar*Cap. 8:11. n-au pus mâna pe averile lor.

17 Aceste lucruri s-au întâmplat în a treisprezecea zi a lunii Adar. În ziua a paisprezecea, iudeii s-au odihnit și au făcut din ea o zi de ospăț și de bucurie. 18 Cei ce se aflau la Susa s-au strâns în ziua a treisprezecea*Vers. 11,15. și a paisprezecea, dar în ziua a cincisprezecea s-au odihnit și au făcut din ea o zi de ospăț și de bucurie. 19 De aceea, iudeii de la țară, care locuiesc în cetăți fără ziduri, au făcut din ziua a paisprezecea a lunii Adar o zi*Deut. 16:11,14. de bucurie, de ospăț și de*Cap. 8:17. sărbătoare, în care își trimit*Vers. 22.Neem. 8:10,12. daruri unii altora. 20 Mardoheu a scris aceste lucruri și a trimis scrisori tuturor iudeilor din toate ținuturile împăratului Ahașveroș, de aproape și din depărtare. 21 Le poruncea să prăznuiască în fiecare an zilele a paisprezecea și a cincisprezecea ale lunii Adar, 22 ca zile în care căpătaseră odihnă, scăpând de vrăjmașii lor. Le-a poruncit să prăznuiască luna în care întristarea lor se prefăcuse*Ps. 30:11. în bucurie și jalea lor, în zi de sărbătoare și să facă din aceste zile niște zile de ospăț și de bucurie, când să-și trimită*Vers. 19.Neem. 8:10. daruri de mâncare unii altora și să împartă daruri celor lipsiți. 23 Iudeii s-au îndatorat să facă ceea ce și începuseră să facă și ce le scrisese Mardoheu. 24 Căci Haman, fiul lui Hamedata, Agaghitul, vrăjmașul tuturor iudeilor, făcuse planul*Cap. 3:6,7. să-i piardă și aruncase Pur, adică sorțul, ca să-i omoare și să-i nimicească. 25 Dar Estera, venind*Vers. 13,14. Cap. 7:5;8:3. înaintea împăratului, împăratul a poruncit în scris să întoarcă*Cap. 7:10.Ps. 7:16. asupra capului lui Haman planul cel rău pe care-l făcuse împotriva iudeilor și să-i spânzure pe lemn pe el și pe fiii lui. 26 De aceea, zilele acestea s-au numit Purim, de la numirea Pur.

Potrivit cu tot cuprinsul acestei scrisori*Vers. 20., potrivit cu cele ce văzuseră ei înșiși și potrivit cu cele ce li se întâmplaseră, 27 iudeii au luat pentru ei, pentru sămânța lor și pentru toți cei ce se vor lipi*Cap. 8:17.Is. 56:3,6.Zah. 2:11. de ei hotărârea și îndatorirea de neschimbat ca să prăznuiască în fiecare an aceste două zile, în felul rânduit și la vremea hotărâtă. 28 Zilele acestea trebuiau să fie pomenite și prăznuite din neam în neam, în fiecare familie, în fiecare ținut și în fiecare cetate. Și zilele acestea, Purim, nu trebuiau desființate niciodată din mijlocul iudeilor, nici să se șteargă aducerea aminte de ele printre urmașii lor. 29 Împărăteasa Estera, fata lui Abihail*Cap. 2:15., și iudeul Mardoheu au scris stăruitor a doua oară pentru ca să întărească scrisoarea*Cap. 8:10. Vers. 20. privitoare la Purim. 30 Au trimis scrisori tuturor iudeilor în cele o sută douăzeci și șapte*Cap. 1:1. de ținuturi ale împăratului Ahașveroș. Ele cuprindeau cuvinte de pace și de credincioșie, 31 întărind ținerea acestor zile Purim la vremea hotărâtă, cum le rânduiseră iudeul Mardoheu și împărăteasa Estera pentru ei și cum și le rânduiseră și pentru ei înșiși și pentru sămânța lor, cu prilejul postului*Cap. 4:3,16. lor și țipetelor lor. 32 Porunca Esterei a întărit așezarea acestei sărbători Purim, și lucrul acesta a fost scris în carte.
