1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to draw up a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us, 2 even as they delivered them unto us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, 3 it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus; 4 that thou mightest know the certainty concerning the things wherein thou wast instructed.

5 There was in the days of Herod, king of Judæa, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abijah: and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

8 Now it came to pass, while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course, 9 according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the hour of incense. 11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: because thy supplication is heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. 16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn unto the Lord their God. 17 And he shall go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to walk in the wisdom of the just; to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him. 18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. 19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to bring thee these good tidings. 20 And behold, thou shalt be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou believedst not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. 21 And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marvelled while he tarried in the temple. 22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: and he continued making signs unto them, and remained dumb. 23 And it came to pass, when the days of his ministration were fulfilled, he departed unto his house.

24 And after these days Elisabeth his wife conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying, 25 Thus hath the Lord done unto me in the days wherein he looked upon me, to take away my reproach among men.

26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee. 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this might be. 30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. 31 And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34 And Mary said unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee: wherefore also the holy thing which is begotten shall be called the Son of God. 36 And behold, Elisabeth thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that was called barren. 37 For no word from God shall be void of power. 38 And Mary said, Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

39 And Mary arose in these days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah; 40 and entered into the house of Zacharias and saluted Elisabeth. 41 And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit; 42 and she lifted up her voice with a loud cry, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. 43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come unto me? 44 For behold, when the voice of thy salutation came into mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. 45 And blessed is she that believed; for there shall be a fulfilment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord. 46 And Mary said,

My soul doth magnify the Lord,

47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

48 For he hath looked upon the low estate of his handmaid:

For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things;

And holy is his name.

50 And his mercy is unto generations and generations

On them that fear him.

51 He hath showed strength with his arm;

He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart.

52 He hath put down princes from their thrones,

And hath exalted them of low degree.

53 The hungry he hath filled with good things;

And the rich he hath sent empty away.

54 He hath given help to Israel his servant,

That he might remember mercy

55 (As he spake unto our fathers)

Toward Abraham and his seed for ever.

56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned unto her house.

57 Now Elisabeth’s time was fulfilled that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. 58 And her neighbors and her kinsfolk heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her; and they rejoiced with her. 59 And it came to pass on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. 60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. 61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. 62 And they made signs to his father, what he would have him called. 63 And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. 64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, blessing God. 65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judæa. 66 And all that heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, What then shall this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.

67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,

68 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

For he hath visited and wrought redemption for his people,

69 And hath raised up a horn of salvation for us

In the house of his servant David

70 (As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets that have been from of old),

71 Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

72 To show mercy towards our fathers,

And to remember his holy covenant;

73 The oath which he sware unto Abraham our father,

74 To grant unto us that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies

Should serve him without fear,

75 In holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

76 Yea and thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Most High:

For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to make ready his ways;

77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people

In the remission of their sins,

78 Because of the tender mercy of our God,

Whereby the dayspring from on high shall visit us,

79 To shine upon them that sit in darkness and the shadow of death;

To guide our feet into the way of peace.

80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel.

5 În*Mat. 2:1. zilele lui Irod, împăratul Iudeii, era un preot numit Zaharia, din*1 Cron. 24:10,19.Neem. 12:4,17. ceata lui Abia. Nevasta lui era din fetele lui Aaron, și se chema Elisabeta. 6 Amândoi erau neprihăniți*Fapte 7:1;17:1.1 Împ. 9:4.2 Împ. 20:3.Iov 1:1.Fapte 23:1;24:16.Filip. 3:6. înaintea lui Dumnezeu și păzeau fără pată toate poruncile și toate rânduielile Domnului. 7 N-aveau copii, pentru că Elisabeta era stearpă; și amândoi erau înaintați în vârstă. 8 Dar, pe când slujea Zaharia înaintea lui Dumnezeu, la rândul cetei lui, 9 după obiceiul preoției, a ieșit la*1 Cron. 24:19.2 Cron. 8:14;31:2. sorți să intre să tămâieze*Exod 30:7,8.1 Sam. 2:28.1 Cron. 23:13.2 Cron. 29:11. în Templul Domnului. 10 În*Lev. 16:17.Apoc. 8:3,4. ceasul tămâierii, toată mulțimea norodului se ruga afară. 11 Atunci, un înger al Domnului s-a arătat lui Zaharia și a stat în picioare la dreapta altarului*Exod 30:1. pentru tămâiere. 12 Zaharia s-a*Jud. 6:22;13:22.Dan. 10:8. Vers. 29. Cap. 2:9.Fapte 10:4.Apoc. 1:17. înspăimântat, când l-a văzut, și l-a apucat frica. 13 Dar îngerul i-a zis: „Nu te teme, Zahario; fiindcă rugăciunea ta a fost ascultată. Nevastă-ta, Elisabeta, îți va naște un fiu, căruia îi vei*Vers. 60,63. pune numele Ioan. 14 El va fi pentru tine o pricină de bucurie și veselie, și mulți*Vers. 58. se vor bucura de nașterea lui. 15 Căci va fi mare înaintea Domnului. Nu*Num. 6:3.Jud. 13:4. Cap. 7:33. va bea nici vin, nici băutură amețitoare, și se va umple de Duhul Sfânt încă*Ier. 1:5.Gal. 1:15. din pântecele maicii sale. 16 El*Mal. 4:5,6. va întoarce pe mulți din fiii lui Israel la Domnul Dumnezeul lor. 17 Va*Mal. 4:5.Mat. 11:14.Marcu 9:12. merge înaintea lui Dumnezeu, în duhul și puterea lui Ilie, ca să întoarcă inimile părinților la copii și pe cei neascultători, la umblarea în înțelepciunea celor neprihăniți, ca să gătească Domnului un norod bine pregătit pentru El." 18 Zaharia a zis îngerului: „Din*Gen. 17:17. ce voi cunoaște lucrul acesta? Fiindcă eu sunt bătrân, și nevastă-mea este înaintată în vârstă." 19 Drept răspuns, îngerul i-a zis: „Eu sunt Gavril*Dan. 8:16;9:21-23.Mat. 18:10.Evr. 1:14., care stau înaintea lui Dumnezeu; am fost trimis să-ți vorbesc, și să-ți aduc această veste bună. 20 Iată că vei*Ezec. 3:26;24:27. fi mut și nu vei putea vorbi, până în ziua când se vor întâmpla aceste lucruri, pentru că n-ai crezut cuvintele mele, care se vor împlini la vremea lor." 21 Norodul însă aștepta pe Zaharia și se mira de zăbovirea lui în Templu. 22 Când a ieșit afară, nu putea să le vorbească; și au înțeles că avusese o vedenie în Templu. El le făcea semne întruna și a rămas mut. 23 După ce i s-au împlinit zilele*2 Împ. 11:5.1 Cron. 9:25. de slujbă, Zaharia s-a dus acasă. 24 Peste câtva timp, Elisabeta, nevasta lui, a rămas însărcinată și s-a ținut ascunsă de tot cinci luni. „Căci", zicea ea, 25 „iată ce mi-a făcut Domnul, când Și-a aruncat ochii spre mine, ca să-mi*Gen. 30:23.Is. 4:1;54:1,4. ia ocara dintre oameni."

26 În luna a șasea, îngerul Gavril a fost trimis de Dumnezeu într-o cetate din Galileea, numită Nazaret, 27 la o fecioară logodită*Mat. 1:18. Cap. 2:4,5. cu un bărbat, numit Iosif, din casa lui David. Numele fecioarei era Maria. 28 Îngerul a intrat la ea și a zis: „Plecăciune*Dan. 9:23;10:19. ție, căreia ți s-a făcut mare har; Domnul*Jud. 6:12. este cu tine, binecuvântată ești tu între femei!" 29 Tulburată*Vers. 12. foarte mult de cuvintele acestea, Maria se întreba singură ce putea să însemne urarea aceasta. 30 Îngerul i-a zis: „Nu te teme, Marie; căci ai căpătat îndurare înaintea lui Dumnezeu. 31 Și*Is. 7:14.Mat. 1:21. iată că vei rămâne însărcinată și vei naște un Fiu, căruia Îi vei pune*Cap. 2:21. numele Isus. 32 El va fi mare și*Marcu 5:7. va fi chemat Fiul Celui Preaînalt; și*2 Sam. 7:11,12.Ps. 132:11.Is. 9:6,7;16:5.Ier. 23:5.Apoc. 3:7. Domnul Dumnezeu Îi va da scaunul de domnie al tatălui Său David. 33 Va*Dan. 2:44;7:14,27.Obad. 21.Mica 4:7.Ioan 12:34.Evr. 1:8. împărăți peste casa lui Iacov în veci, și Împărăția Lui nu va avea sfârșit." 34 Maria a zis îngerului: „Cum se va face lucrul acesta, fiindcă eu nu știu de bărbat?" 35 Îngerul i-a răspuns: „Duhul Sfânt*Mat. 1:20. Se va coborî peste tine, și puterea Celui Preaînalt te va umbri. De aceea, Sfântul care Se va naște din tine va fi chemat Fiul*Mat. 14:33;26:63,64.Marcu 1:1.Ioan 1:34;20:31.Fapte 8:37.Rom. 1:4. lui Dumnezeu. 36 Iată că Elisabeta, rudenia ta, a zămislit și ea un fiu la bătrânețe; și ea, căreia i se zicea stearpă, este acum în a șasea lună. 37 Căci*Gen. 18:14.Ier. 32:17.Zah. 8:6.Mat. 19:26.Marcu 10:27. Cap. 18:27.Rom. 4:21. niciun cuvânt de la Dumnezeu nu este lipsit de putere." 38 Maria a zis: „Iată, roaba Domnului; facă-mi-se după cuvintele tale!" Și îngerul a plecat de la ea.

39 Maria s-a sculat chiar în*Ios. 21:9-11. zilele acelea și a plecat în grabă spre munți, într-o cetate a lui Iuda. 40 A intrat în casa lui Zaharia și a urat de bine Elisabetei. 41 Cum a auzit Elisabeta urarea Mariei, i-a săltat pruncul în pântece, și Elisabeta s-a umplut de Duhul Sfânt. 42 Ea a strigat cu glas tare: „Binecuvântată*Jud. 5:24. Vers. 28. ești tu între femei și binecuvântat este rodul pântecelui tău. 43 Cum mi-a fost dat mie să vină la mine maica Domnului meu? 44 Fiindcă iată, cum mi-a ajuns la urechi glasul urării tale, mi-a săltat pruncul în pântece de bucurie. 45 Ferice de aceea care a crezut; pentru că lucrurile care i-au fost spuse din partea Domnului se vor împlini." 46 Și Maria a zis: „Sufletul meu mărește*1 Sam. 2:1.Ps. 34:2,3;35:9.Hab. 3:18. pe Domnul 47 și mi se bucură duhul în Dumnezeu, Mântuitorul meu, 48 pentru că a privit*1 Sam. 1:11.Ps. 138:6. spre starea smerită a roabei Sale. Căci iată că, de acum încolo, toate neamurile îmi*Mal. 3:12. Cap. 11:27. vor zice fericită, 49 pentru că Cel Atotputernic a făcut lucruri mari pentru mine*Ps. 71:19;126:2,3.. Numele Lui este sfânt*Ps. 111:9., 50 și îndurarea*Gen. 17:7.Exod 20:6.Ps. 103:17,18. Lui se întinde din neam în neam peste cei ce se tem de El. 51 El a arătat putere*Ps. 98:1;118:15.Is. 40:10;51:9;52:10. cu brațul Lui; a risipit*Ps. 33:10.1 Pet. 5:5. gândurile pe care le aveau cei mândri în inima lor. 52 A răsturnat*1 Sam. 2:6.Iov 5:11.Ps. 113:6. pe cei puternici de pe scaunele lor de domnie și a înălțat pe cei smeriți. 53 Pe*1 Sam. 2:5.Ps. 34:10. cei flămânzi i-a săturat de bunătăți, și pe cei bogați i-a scos afară cu mâinile goale. 54 A venit în ajutorul robului Său Israel, căci Și-a adus aminte*Ps. 98:3.Ier. 31:3,20. de îndurarea Sa – 55 cum*Gen. 17:19.Ps. 132:11.Rom. 11:28.Gal. 3:16. făgăduise părinților noștri – față de Avraam și sămânța lui în veac." 56 Maria a rămas împreună cu Elisabeta cam trei luni. Apoi s-a întors acasă.

57 Elisabetei i s-a împlinit vremea să nască; și a născut un fiu. 58 Vecinii și rudele ei au auzit că Domnul a arătat mare îndurare față de ea și se*Vers. 14. bucurau împreună cu ea. 59 În*Gen. 17:12.Lev. 12:3. ziua a opta, au venit să taie pruncul împrejur și voiau să-i pună numele Zaharia, după numele tatălui său. 60 Dar mama lui a luat cuvântul și a zis: „Nu*Vers. 13.. Ci are să se cheme Ioan." 61 Ei i-au zis: „Nimeni din rudeniile tale nu poartă numele acesta." 62 Și au început să facă semne tatălui său, ca să știe cum ar vrea să-i pună numele. 63 Zaharia a cerut o tăbliță de scris și a scris, zicând: „Numele lui este Ioan*Vers. 13.." Și toți s-au minunat. 64 În clipa aceea*Vers. 20., i s-a deschis gura, i s-a dezlegat limba, și el vorbea și binecuvânta pe Dumnezeu. 65 Pe toți vecinii i-a apucat frica, și în tot ținutul acela muntos*Vers. 39. al Iudeii se vorbea despre toate aceste lucruri. 66 Toți cei ce le auzeau le păstrau*Cap. 2:19,51. în inima lor și ziceau: „Oare ce va fi pruncul acesta?" Și mâna*Gen. 39:2.Ps. 80:17;89:21.Fapte 11:21. Domnului era într-adevăr cu el.

67 Zaharia, tatăl lui, s-a*Ioel 2:28. umplut de Duhul Sfânt, a prorocit și a zis: 68 „Binecuvântat*1 Împ. 1:48.Ps. 41:13;72:18;106:48. este Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel, pentru că*Exod 3:16;4:31.Ps. 111:9. Cap. 7:16. a cercetat și a răscumpărat pe poporul Său. 69 Și*Ps. 132:17. ne-a ridicat o mântuire puternică*1:69 Grecește: un corn de mântuire. în casa robului Său David, 70 cum*Ier. 23:5,6;30:10.Dan. 9:24.Fapte 3:21.Rom. 1:2. vestise prin gura sfinților Săi proroci, care au fost din vechime; 71 mântuire de vrăjmașii noștri și din mâna tuturor celor ce ne urăsc! 72 Astfel*Lev. 26:42.Ps. 98:3;105:8,9;106:45.Ezec. 16:60. Vers. 54. Își arată El îndurarea față de părinții noștri și Își aduce aminte de legământul Lui cel sfânt, 73 potrivit jurământului*Gen. 12:3;17:4;22:16,17.Evr. 6:13,17. prin care Se jurase părintelui nostru Avraam, 74 că, după ce ne va izbăvi din mâna vrăjmașilor noștri, ne va îngădui să-I slujim*Rom. 6:18,22.Evr. 9:14. fără frică, 75 trăind înaintea Lui în*Ier. 32:39,40.Efes. 4:24.2 Tes. 2:13.2 Tim. 1:9.Tit 2:12.1 Pet. 1:15.2 Pet. 1:4. sfințenie și neprihănire, în toate zilele vieții noastre. 76 Și tu, pruncule, vei fi chemat proroc al Celui Preaînalt. Căci*Is. 40:3.Mal. 3:1;4:5.Mat. 11:10. Vers. 17. vei merge înaintea Domnului, ca să pregătești căile Lui 77 și să dai poporului Său cunoștința mântuirii, care stă în*Marcu 1:4. Cap. 3:3. iertarea păcatelor lui; 78 datorită marii îndurări a Dumnezeului nostru, în urma căreia ne-a cercetat Soarele care răsare din înălțime, 79 ca să*Is. 9:2;42:7;49:9.Mat. 4:16.Fapte 26:18. lumineze pe cei ce zac în întunericul și în umbra morții și să ne îndrepte picioarele pe calea păcii!" 80 Iar pruncul*Cap. 2:40. creștea și se întărea în duh. Și a*Mat. 3:1;11:7. stat în locuri pustii până în ziua arătării lui înaintea lui Israel.
