1 For you yourselves, brothers, are conscious that our coming among you was not without effect:
2 But after we had first undergone much pain and been cruelly attacked as you saw, at Philippi, by the help of God we gave you the good news without fear, though everything was against us.
3 For our witness does not come from error or from an unclean heart or from deceit:
4 But even as the good news was given to us by the approval of God, so we give it out; not as pleasing men, but God by whom our hearts are tested.
5 For it is common knowledge among you that we never made use of smooth-sounding false words, and God is witness that at no time were we secretly desiring profit for ourselves,
6 Or looking for glory from men, from you or from others, when we might have made ourselves a care to you as Apostles of Christ.
7 But we were gentle among you, like a woman caring for her little ones:
8 Even so, being full of loving desire for you, we took delight in giving you not only God's good news, but even our lives, because you were dear to us.
9 For you have the memory, my brothers, of our trouble and care; how, working night and day, so that we might not be a trouble to any of you, we gave you the good news of God.
10 You are witnesses, with God, how holy and upright and free from all evil was our way of life among you who have faith;
11 Even as you saw how, like a father with his children, we were teaching and comforting you all, and giving witness,
12 So that your lives might be pleasing to God, who has given you a part in his kingdom and his glory.
13 And for this cause we still give praise to God, that, when the word came to your ears through us, you took it, not as the word of man, but, as it truly is, the word of God, which has living power in you who have faith.
14 For you, my brothers, took as your examples the churches of God which are in Judaea in Christ Jesus; because you underwent the same things from your countrymen as they did from the Jews;
15 Who put to death the Lord Jesus and the prophets, violently driving us out; who are unpleasing to God and against all men;
16 Who, to make the measure of their sins complete, kept us from giving the word of salvation to the Gentiles: but the wrath of God is about to come on them in the fullest degree.
17 But we, my brothers, being away from you for a short time, in body but not in heart, had all the more desire to see your face;
18 For which reason we made attempts to come to you, even I, Paul, once and again; but Satan kept us from coming.
19 For what is our hope or joy or crown of glory? Are not even you, before our Lord Jesus, at his coming?
20 For you are our glory and our joy.
1 Vocês bem sabem, irmãos, que a nossa passagem no vosso meio não foi de forma alguma inútil
2 Embora tenhamos sofrido e sido maltratados em Filipos, como se lembram, Deus deu-nos ousadia para vos pregar as boas novas, apesar da oposição que se levantava.
3 E a nossa pregação não foi feita com segundas intenções, nem por motivos ardilosos ou com o desejo de tirar proveitos pessoais.
4 Nós fomos considerados por Deus como sendo dignos de transmitir a mensagem do evangelho que nos foi confiada; e isso fazemos sem cuidar em agradar às pessoas, mas sim a Deus, que conhece os nossos corações.
5 Vocês puderam verificar como nunca usámos de palavras lisonjeiras, a fim de beneficiarmos de ajudas em nosso proveito. Deus é testemunha disso.
6 E nunca procurámos os louvores do público que nos ouvia, quer fossem vocês mesmos ou outros.
7 É verdade que, como representantes de Cristo, teríamos direito a exigir qualquer coisa de vocês. Mas não: nós, no vosso meio, fomos antes como uma mãe para com os seus filhos, fomos cheios de cuidados.
8 De tal forma queríamos o vosso bem que até, para além de vos darmos a boa nova de Deus, vos daríamos também as nossas próprias vidas, pois vocês nos eram muito queridos.
9 Recordam-se, irmãos, de todo o nosso trabalho e canseira? Trabalhámos noite e dia a fim de não nos tornarmos pesados a ninguém, enquanto vos anunciávamos o evangelho de Deus.
10 Vocês - e Deus também - são testemunhas da forma santa, justa e irrepreensível como nos comportámos para convosco os que creram.
11 E viram como vos exortámos e encorajámos, como faria um pai aos seus próprios filhos, para que a vossa conduta honrasse Deus, o qual vos levará para o seu domínio celestial, para partilharem da sua glória.
13 Por isso não deixamos de dar a Deus o nosso agradecimento pelo facto de terem recebido a mensagem de Deus, que vos pregámos, não como teorias humanas, mas como a palavra mesma de Deus, que realmente é, e que agiu profundamente na vida de vocês, os crentes.
14 Na realidade, tem-vos acontecido, irmãos, o mesmo que às igrejas de Deus na Judeia, fiéis a Jesus Cristo; porque vocês também sofreram dos vossos próprios compatriotas a mesma perseguição que a eles lhes moveram os judeus
15 Estes foram os que, depois de matarem os seus próprios profetas, levaram à morte o Senhor Jesus, e nos têm perseguido também a nós. Estão contra Deus, e são afinal inimigos da humanidade.
16 Impedem-nos de falar aos gentios a mensagem da salvação, apenas conseguindo, com mais isso ainda, aumentar os seus pecados. Mas a severidade da justiça de Deus atingiu-os finalmente com todo o seu rigor.
17 Quanto a nós, irmãos, tendo estado, por um certo espaço de tempo, longe da vossa vista - mas não longe de coração - com tanto mais vontade procurámos tornar a ver-vos..
18 E assim, por mais que uma vez, tentámos ir ter convosco, pelo menos eu, Paulo, mas sempre fomos impedidos disso por Satanás.
19 Porque, afinal, não são vocês que constituem o objecto das nossas expectativas? E não são vocês que fazem toda a nossa alegria, e que serão a nossa recompensa espiritual perante o nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, quando ele voltar?
20 Vocês são a nossa alegria; vocês são a nossa glória!
