1 But about the times and their order, my brothers, there is no need for me to say anything to you.
2 For you yourselves have the knowledge that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
3 When they say, There is peace and no danger, then sudden destruction will come on them, as birth-pains on a woman with child; and they will not be able to get away from it.
4 But you, my brothers, are not in the dark, for that day to overtake you like a thief:
5 For you are all sons of light and of the day: we are not of the night or of the dark.
6 So then, let us not take our rest as the others do, but let us be self-controlled and awake.
7 For those who are sleeping do so in the night; and those who are the worse for drink are so in the night;
8 But let us, who are of the day, be serious, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and on our heads, the hope of salvation.
9 For God's purpose for us is not wrath, but salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
10 Who was put to death for us, so that, awake or sleeping, we may have a part in his life.
11 So then, go on comforting and building up one another, as you have been doing.
12 But we make this request to you, my brothers: give attention to those who are working among you, who are over you in the Lord to keep order among you;
13 And have a high opinion of them in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.
14 And our desire is that you will keep control over those whose lives are not well ordered, giving comfort to the feeble-hearted, supporting those with little strength, and putting up with much from all.
15 Let no one give evil for evil; but ever go after what is good, for one another and for all.
16 Have joy at all times.
17 Keep on with your prayers.
18 In everything give praise: for this is the purpose of God in Christ Jesus for you.
19 Do not put out the light of the Spirit;
20 Do not make little of the words of the prophets;
21 Let all things be tested; keep to what is good;
22 Keep from every form of evil.
23 And may the God of peace himself make you holy in every way; and may your spirit and soul and body be free from all sin at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 God, by whom you have been marked out in his purpose, is unchanging and will make it complete.
25 Brothers, keep us in mind in your prayers.
26 Give all the brothers a holy kiss.
27 I give orders in the name of the Lord that all the brothers are to be present at the reading of this letter.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
1 Quanto à época e ao momento em que isto acontecerá, irmãos, não preciso de vos escrever a esse respeito.
2 Porque vocês sabem bem que esse grande dia virá inesperadamente, como um ladrão na noite
3 Na verdade, quando as pessoas disserem Agora há paz e segurança!, então virá sobre elas, de súbito, a catástrofe. Será como quando uma grávida começa sentindo as dores do parto. Não poderão escapar, de forma alguma.
4 Mas vocês, irmãos, já não vivem mais nas trevas, para que venham a ser surpreendidos por esse momento como por um ladrão.
5 Pois são todos filhos da luz, filhos do dia. Não pertencemos mais ao domínio da noite e das trevas.
6 Estejamos então vigilantes, e não adormecidos como o resto das gentes. Estejamos alerta e sejamos sóbrios.
7 Em geral, é de noite que as pessoas dormem e também que se embebedam.
8 Mas nós vivemos na luz do dia; e é por isso que devemos ser moderados, revestindo-nos da couraça da fé e do amor, tendo como capacete a esperança da salvação
9 Deus não nos destina à condenação, mas antes à posse da salvação, através de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo,c
10 o qual morreu por nós para que, quer estejamos vivos, quer estejamos já mortos, quando ele vier, possamos viver juntamente com ele.
11 Por isso animem-se uns aos outros, contribuindo mutuamente para o fortalecimento da fé; é aliás isso que têm vindo a fazer.
12 E pedimo-vos, irmãos, que respeitem aqueles que trabalham no vosso meio ao serviço do Senhor, que vos dirigem e vos aconselham.
13 Mostrem-lhes toda a vossa estima e afeição, porque é justo, em razão das funções que desempenham na obra de Deus. Vivam em paz uns com os outros.
14 Admoestem os que são preguiçosos; animem os que se desencorajam facilmente; fortaleçam os que estão fracos; sejam pacientes com todos
15 Que ninguém retribua o mal com o mal. Que o bem seja a regra da vossa vida, não só entre crentes, como para com todos.
16 Conservem em todo momento a vossa alegria
17 Orem sem cessar!
18 Que todas as coisas sejam uma razão de expressarem o vosso reconhecimento a Deus. Esta é a vontade de Deus para convosco, os que vivem em Cristo Jesus.
19 Não entravem a acção do Espírito de Deus.
20 Não desprezem as profecias,
21 mas examinem tudo o que é dito. Guardem o que for bom.
22 Evitem qualquer espécie de mal.
23 E que o Deus de paz, ele próprio, vos torne puros de uma forma integral. E que todo o vosso ser -espírito, alma e corpo- se mantenha plenamente sem culpa, até ao dia em que o nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo voltar
24 Deus, que vos chamou, é fiel. E ele tudo fará por vocês.
25 Orem por nós, irmãos. Dêem a todos os crentes um beijo fraterno.
27 Em nome do Senhor vos peço que sem falta façam ler esta carta a todos os crentes, os filhos de Deus.
28 O meu voto é que a graça de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo seja convosco.
