1 Saul was thirty years old when he began to reign; and he reigned two years over Israel. 2 And Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the mount of Beth-el, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent. 3 And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear. 4 And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten the garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were gathered together after Saul to Gilgal. 5 And the Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward of Beth-aven. 6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in holds, and in pits. 7 Now some of the Hebrews had gone over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; but as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. 8 And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. 9 And Saul said, Bring hither the burnt offering to me, and the peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering. 10 And it came to pass that, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him. 11 And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash; 12 therefore said I, Now will the Philistines come down upon me to Gilgal, and I have not entreated the favour of the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered the burnt offering. 13 And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever. 14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath appointed him to be prince over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee. 15 And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men. 16 And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Geba of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash. 17 And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual: 18 and another company turned the way to Beth-horon: and another company turned the way of the border that looketh down upon the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness. 19 Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears: 20 but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock; 21 yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes; and to set the goads. 22 So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found. 23 And the garrison of the Philistines went out unto the pass of Michmash.

1 Saul havia reinado em Israel durante um ano. No segundo ano do seu reinado sobre o povo, 2 escolheu três mil homens de Israel: dois mil estavam com Saul em Micmás e na região montanhosa de Betel, e mil estavam com Jônatas em Gibeá de Benjamim. Saul despediu o resto do povo, cada um para a sua casa. 3 Jônatas derrotou a guarnição dos filisteus que estava em Gibeá, e os filisteus ficaram sabendo disso. Então Saul mandou tocar a trombeta por toda a terra, dizendo:

— Que os hebreus escutem isto.

4 E todo o Israel ouviu dizer: "Saul derrotou a guarnição dos filisteus, e agora os filisteus estão com ódio de Israel." Então o povo foi convocado para se juntar a Saul, em Gilgal.

5 Os filisteus se reuniram para lutar contra Israel com trinta mil carros de guerra, seis mil cavaleiros e povo em multidão como a areia que está na praia do mar. Eles foram e acamparam em Micmás, a leste de Bete-Áven. 6 Quando os homens de Israel viram que estavam em apuros (porque o povo estava angustiado), se esconderam em cavernas e em buracos, entre rochas, em túmulos e cisternas. 7 Também alguns dos hebreus passaram o Jordão e foram para a terra de Gade e Gileade. E o povo que permaneceu com Saul, estando este ainda em Gilgal, se encheu de temor.

8 Saul esperou sete dias, segundo o prazo determinado por Samuel. Mas como Samuel não vinha a Gilgal, o povo foi se espalhando dali. 9 Então Saul disse:

— Tragam-me aqui o holocausto e as ofertas pacíficas.

E ofereceu o holocausto. 10 Mal tinha ele acabado de oferecer o holocausto, eis que chegou Samuel. Saul saiu ao encontro dele, para o saudar. 11 Samuel perguntou:

— O que foi que você fez?

Saul respondeu:

— Vendo que o povo ia se espalhando daqui, e que você não vinha no prazo combinado, e que os filisteus já tinham se ajuntado em Micmás, 12 eu disse comigo: "Agora os filisteus virão contra mim em Gilgal, e ainda não busquei a face do Senhor." Assim, forçado pelas circunstâncias, ofereci holocaustos.

13 Então Samuel disse a Saul:

— Você cometeu uma loucura, não guardando o mandamento que o Senhor, seu Deus, lhe ordenou. Pois o Senhor teria confirmado para sempre o seu reinado sobre Israel. 14 Mas agora o seu reinado não subsistirá. O Senhor buscou para si um homem segundo o seu coração e já lhe ordenou que seja príncipe sobre o seu povo, porque você não guardou o que o Senhor lhe ordenou.

15 Então Samuel se levantou e foi de Gilgal a Gibeá de Benjamim. Saul contou o povo que estava com ele: eram cerca de seiscentos homens.

16 Saul, o seu filho Jônatas e o povo que estava com eles ficaram em Geba de Benjamim, enquanto os filisteus estavam acampados em Micmás. 17 Os saqueadores saíram do campo dos filisteus em três tropas. Uma delas tomou o caminho de Ofra à terra de Sual; 18 a outra tomou o caminho de Bete-Horom; e a terceira, o caminho de onde se avista o vale de Zeboim, na direção do deserto.

19 Ora, em toda a terra de Israel não havia um único ferreiro, porque os filisteus tinham dito: "Para que os hebreus não façam espadas, nem lanças." 20 Por isso todo o Israel tinha de ir aos filisteus para amolar as lâminas dos arados, as enxadas, os machados e as foices. 21 Os filisteus cobravam dos israelitas oito gramas de prata para amolar os fios das lâminas e das enxadas e quatro gramas de prata para amolar machados e aguilhadas. 22 Por isso, no dia da batalha, não se achou nem espada, nem lança na mão de nenhum do povo que estava com Saul e com Jônatas; só Saul e seu filho Jônatas tinham essas armas.

23 A guarnição dos filisteus saiu ao desfiladeiro de Micmás.
