1 And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their hosts together for warfare, to fight with Israel. And Achish said unto David, Know thou assuredly, that thou shalt go out with me in the host, thou and thy men. 2 And David said to Achish, Therefore thou shalt know what thy servant will do. And Achish said to David, Therefore will I make thee keeper of mine head for ever. 3 Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land. 4 And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and pitched in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they pitched in Gilboa. 5 And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. 6 And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets. 7 Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at En-dor. 8 And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and went, he and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, Divine unto me, I pray thee, by the familiar spirit, and bring me up whomsoever I shall name unto thee. 9 And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die? 10 And Saul sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing. 11 Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel. 12 And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul. 13 And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what seest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I see a god coming up out of the earth. 14 And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a robe. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground, and did obeisance. 15 And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do. 16 And Samuel said, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine adversary? 17 And the LORD hath wrought for himself, as he spake by me: and the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David. 18 Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD and didst not execute his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day. 19 Moreover the LORD will deliver Israel also with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and tomorrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the LORD shall deliver the host of Israel also into the hand of the Philistines. 20 Then Saul fell straightway his full length upon the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night. 21 And the woman came unto Saul, and saw that he was sore troubled, and said unto him, Behold, thine handmaid hath hearkened unto thy voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have hearkened unto thy words which thou spakest unto me. 22 Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou also unto the voice of thine handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before thee; and eat, that thou mayest have strength, when thou goest on thy way. 23 But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, constrained him; and he hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed. 24 And the woman had a fatted calf in the house; and she hasted, and killed it; and she took flour, and kneaded it, and did bake unleavened bread thereof: 25 and she brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, and went away that night.

1 E aconteceu que, naqueles dias, os filisteus reuniram os seus exércitos para a guerra, para lutar contra Israel. Então Aquis disse a Davi:

— Fique sabendo que você irá comigo para a batalha, você e os seus homens.

2 Então Davi disse a Aquis:

— Assim você saberá o quanto este seu servo pode fazer.

Aquis respondeu:

— Por isso, você será meu guarda pessoal para sempre.

3 Samuel já havia morrido, e todo o Israel o tinha chorado e o tinha sepultado em Ramá, que era a sua cidade. Saul havia desterrado os médiuns e os adivinhos.

4 Os filisteus se reuniram e foram acampar em Suném. Saul reuniu todo o Israel, e eles acamparam em Gilboa. 5 Quando Saul viu o acampamento dos filisteus, foi tomado de medo, e muito se estremeceu o seu coração. 6 Saul consultou o Senhor, porém o Senhor não lhe respondeu, nem por sonhos, nem por Urim, nem por profetas. 7 Então Saul disse aos seus servos:

— Procurem uma mulher que seja médium, para que eu me encontre com ela e a consulte.

Os servos responderam:

— Há uma mulher em En-Dor que é médium.

8 Saul se disfarçou, vestiu outras roupas e se foi, acompanhado de dois homens. Chegaram de noite à casa da mulher, e Saul lhe disse:

— Peço que você adivinhe para mim pela necromancia e me faça subir aquele que eu lhe disser.

9 Mas a mulher respondeu:

— Você sabe muito bem o que Saul fez: eliminou da terra os médiuns e adivinhos. Então por que você está me preparando uma armadilha, que pode me levar à morte?

10 Então Saul lhe jurou pelo Senhor, dizendo:

— Tão certo como vive o Senhor, nenhum castigo lhe sobrevirá por isso.

11 Então a mulher perguntou:

— Quem você quer que eu faça subir?

Ele respondeu:

— Samuel.

12 Quando a mulher viu Samuel, gritou em alta voz e disse a Saul:

— Por que você me enganou? Pois você mesmo é Saul.

13 Mas o rei disse à mulher:

— Não tenha medo! O que você está vendo?

A mulher respondeu a Saul:

— Vejo um deus subindo da terra.

14 Ele perguntou:

— Como é a sua figura?

Ela respondeu:

— Vem subindo um ancião e está enrolado numa capa.

Então Saul entendeu que se tratava de Samuel. Ele se inclinou com o rosto em terra e se prostrou.

15 Samuel perguntou a Saul:

— Por que você foi me perturbar, fazendo-me subir?

Então Saul disse:

— É que estou muito angustiado, porque os filisteus guerreiam contra mim, e Deus se afastou de mim e já não me responde, nem pelo ministério dos profetas, nem por sonhos. Por isso o chamei para que você me revele o que devo fazer.

16 Então Samuel disse:

— Por que você pergunta a mim, visto que o Senhor se afastou de você e se tornou seu inimigo? 17 Porque o Senhor fez com você o que havia anunciado por meio de mim: rasgou das suas mãos o reino e o deu a alguém outro, que é Davi. 18 Você não deu ouvidos à voz do Senhor e não executou o que ele, no furor da sua ira, ordenou contra Amaleque, por isso o Senhor fez isso com você, hoje. 19 O Senhor entregará também Israel, com você, nas mãos dos filisteus, e, amanhã, você e os seus filhos estarão comigo. O Senhor também entregará o acampamento de Israel nas mãos dos filisteus.

20 De repente, Saul caiu estendido no chão e ficou com muito medo por causa das palavras de Samuel. Faltavam-lhe as forças, porque não tinha comido nada todo aquele dia e toda aquela noite. 21 A mulher se aproximou de Saul e, vendo que ele estava muito perturbado, disse a ele:

— Veja, esta sua serva deu ouvidos à sua voz. Eu arrisquei a minha vida e fiz o que o senhor me pediu. 22 Então agora é a sua vez de ouvir as palavras desta sua serva: deixe que eu traga um pouco de comida. Coma, para que o senhor tenha forças e possa seguir o seu caminho.

23 Porém ele recusou, dizendo:

— Não vou comer.

Mas os seus servos e a mulher insistiram, e então ele concordou. Levantou-se do chão e sentou-se na cama. 24 A mulher tinha em casa um bezerro gordo, que ela se apressou em matar. Pegou também farinha, amassou-a e fez alguns pães sem fermento. 25 E trouxe a comida a Saul e os seus servos, e eles comeram. Depois, se levantaram e foram embora naquela mesma noite.
