1 And Samuel died; and all Israel gathered themselves together, and lamented him, and buried him in his house at Ramah. And David arose, and went down to the wilderness of Paran. 2 And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel. 3 Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and the woman was of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb. 4 And David heard in the wilderness that Nabal did shear his sheep. 5 And David sent ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name: 6 and thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be both unto thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast. 7 And now I have heard that thou hast shearers: thy shepherds have now been with us, and we did them no hurt, neither was there aught missing unto them, all the while they were in Carmel. 8 Ask thy young men, and they will tell thee: wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes; for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thine hand, unto thy servants, and to thy son David. 9 And when David’s young men came, they spake to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased. 10 And Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master. 11 Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men of whom I know not whence they be? 12 So David’s young men turned on their way, and went back, and came and told him according to all these words. 13 And David said unto his men, Gird ye on every man his sword. And they girded on every man his sword; and David also girded on his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the stuff. 14 But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master; and he flew upon them. 15 But the men were very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we any thing, as long as we were conversant with them, when we were in the fields: 16 they were a wall unto us both by night and by day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep. 17 Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his house: for he is such a son of Belial, that one cannot speak to him. 18 Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched corn, and an hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses. 19 And she said unto her young men, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal. 20 And it was so, as she rode on her ass, and came down by the covert of the mountain, that, behold, David and his men came down against her; and she met them. 21 Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained unto him: and he hath returned me evil for good. 22 God do so unto the enemies of David, and more also, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light so much as one man child. 23 And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and lighted off her ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground. 24 And she fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me be the iniquity: and let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine ears, and hear thou the words of thine handmaid. 25 Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: hut I thine handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send. 26 Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the LORD hath withholden thee from bloodguiltiness, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now therefore let thine enemies, and them that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal. 27 And now this present which thy servant hath brought unto my lord, let it be given unto the young men that follow my lord. 28 Forgive, I pray thee, the trespass of thine handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord fighteth the battles of the LORD; and evil shall not be found in thee all thy days. 29 And though man be risen up to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul, yet the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the LORD thy God; and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he sling out, as from the hollow of a sling. 30 And it shall come to pass, when the LORD shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee prince over Israel; 31 that this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my lord hath avenged himself: and when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine handmaid. 32 And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me: 33 and blessed be thy wisdom, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from bloodguiltiness, and from avenging myself with mine own hand. 34 For in very deed, as the LORD, the God of Israel, liveth, which hath withholden me from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light so much as one man child. 35 So David received of her hand that which she had brought him: and he said unto her, Go up in peace to thine house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy person. 36 And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. 37 And it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, that his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. 38 And it came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD smote Nabal, that he died. 39 And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept back his servant from evil: and the evil-doing of Nabal hath the LORD returned upon his own head. And David sent and spake concerning Abigail, to take her to him to wife. 40 And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David hath sent us unto thee, to take thee to him to wife. 41 And she arose, and bowed herself with her face to the earth, and said, Behold, thine handmaid is a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord. 42 And Abigail hasted, and arose, and rode upon an ass, with five damsels of hers that followed her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife. 43 David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they became both of them his wives. 44 Now Saul had given Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Palti the Son of Laish, which was of Gallim.

1 Samuel morreu, e todos os filhos de Israel se juntaram e o prantearam. E o sepultaram na sua casa, em Ramá. Davi se levantou e foi ao deserto de Parã.

2 Havia um homem, em Maom, que tinha as suas propriedades no Carmelo. Era um homem muito rico: tinha três mil ovelhas e mil cabras. E ele estava tosquiando as suas ovelhas no Carmelo. 3 O nome desse homem era Nabal, e a mulher dele se chamava Abigail. Ela era inteligente e bonita, porém Nabal era grosseiro e mau em tudo o que fazia. Era descendente de Calebe. 4 Quando Davi, no deserto, ouviu dizer que Nabal tosquiava as suas ovelhas, 5 enviou dez rapazes e lhes disse:

— Vão ao Carmelo falar com Nabal e perguntem-lhe, em meu nome, como está. 6 Digam àquele afortunado: "Paz para você, paz para a sua casa e paz para tudo o que é seu! 7 Soube que você está fazendo a tosquia das suas ovelhas. Os seus pastores estiveram conosco e nós não os maltratamos e nada lhes faltou durante todo o tempo em que estiveram no Carmelo. 8 Pergunte aos seus moços, e eles lhe dirão. Portanto, que os meus rapazes encontrem favor em sua presença, porque chegamos em boa hora. Por favor, dê a estes seus servos e a Davi, seu filho, qualquer coisa que você tiver à mão."

9 Os rapazes de Davi foram e falaram a Nabal todas essas palavras em nome de Davi. Depois, ficaram esperando. 10 E Nabal deu a seguinte resposta aos servos de Davi:

— Quem é Davi? E quem é o filho de Jessé? Muitos são, hoje em dia, os servos que fogem do seu senhor. 11 Vocês acham que eu vou pegar o meu pão, a minha água e a carne dos animais que abati para os meus tosquiadores e dar a homens que eu não sei de onde vêm?

12 Então os rapazes de Davi se puseram a caminho e voltaram. Ao chegarem, disseram a Davi tudo o que Nabal havia falado. 13 Então Davi disse aos seus homens:

— Que cada um cinja a sua espada!

E cada um cingiu a sua espada, e também Davi cingiu a sua. Cerca de quatrocentos homens seguiram Davi, enquanto duzentos ficaram com a bagagem. 14 Nesse meio-tempo, um dos moços de Nabal foi falar com Abigail, a mulher de Nabal, dizendo:

— Davi enviou do deserto mensageiros para saudar o nosso senhor, mas ele os pôs a correr. 15 No entanto, aqueles homens nos têm sido muito bons, e nunca fomos maltratados por eles e de nenhuma coisa sentimos falta em todos os dias de nosso trato com eles, quando estávamos no campo. 16 Eles eram como um muro ao nosso redor, tanto de dia como de noite, todos os dias que estivemos com eles apascentando as ovelhas. 17 E agora pense bem e veja o que pode fazer, porque o mal já está determinado contra o nosso senhor e contra toda a sua casa; ele é homem maligno, e não há quem consiga falar com ele.

18 Então Abigail pegou, a toda pressa, duzentos pães, dois odres de vinho, cinco ovelhas preparadas, cinco medidas de trigo tostado, cem cachos de passas e duzentas pastas de figos, e pôs tudo sobre jumentos. 19 Então disse aos seus servos:

— Vão na minha frente, que eu vou logo atrás.

Porém ela não contou nada a seu marido Nabal. 20 Enquanto ela, cavalgando um jumento, descia, encoberta pelo monte, Davi e seus homens também desciam, e ela se encontrou com eles. 21 Ora, Davi tinha dito:

— Com certeza, de nada adiantou ter protegido tudo o que esse homem possui no deserto, e de nada sentiu falta de tudo o que lhe pertence; ele me pagou o bem com o mal. 22 Que Deus me castigue, se, até o amanhecer, eu não matar todos os do sexo masculino que estão com ele.

23 Quando Abigail viu Davi, desceu depressa do jumento e prostrou-se sobre o rosto diante de Davi, inclinando-se até o chão. 24 Lançou-se aos pés de Davi e disse:

— Meu senhor, que a culpa recaia sobre mim. Permita que esta sua serva fale e escute as palavras da sua serva. 25 Que o meu senhor não se importe com aquele homem maligno, a saber, com Nabal, porque ele é o que significa o seu nome. Nabal é o seu nome, e a tolice o acompanha. Eu, porém, esta sua serva, não vi os rapazes que o meu senhor mandou. 26 Agora, meu senhor, tão certo como vive o Senhor Deus e tão certo como vive a sua alma, foi o Senhor Deus quem o impediu de derramar sangue e de fazer justiça com as próprias mãos. Que os seus inimigos e os que procuram fazer mal ao meu senhor sejam como Nabal. 27 Este é o presente que esta sua serva trouxe ao meu senhor; que ele seja dado aos rapazes que seguem o meu senhor. 28 Perdoe a transgressão desta sua serva. Pois o Senhor Deus certamente firmará a casa de meu senhor, porque ele está travando as batalhas do Senhor Deus. E que não se ache mal em meu senhor durante toda a sua vida. 29 E, se algum homem se levantar para o perseguir e tirar-lhe a vida, a vida de meu senhor será atada no feixe dos que vivem com o Senhor, seu Deus. Porém a vida de seus inimigos, este a lançará fora como se a atirasse da cavidade de uma funda. 30 E, quando o Senhor Deus tiver feito a meu senhor todo o bem que falou a seu respeito e o tiver colocado como príncipe sobre Israel, 31 então meu senhor não terá motivo de pesar ou de remorso por ter derramado sangue inocente e por ter se vingado com as próprias mãos. E, quando o Senhor Deus tiver feito o bem a meu senhor, então lembre-se desta sua serva.

32 Então Davi disse a Abigail:

— Bendito o Senhor, Deus de Israel, que hoje mandou você ao meu encontro. 33 Bendita seja a sua prudência, e bendita seja você mesma, que hoje me impediu de derramar sangue e de me vingar com as minhas próprias mãos. 34 Porque, tão certo como vive o Senhor, Deus de Israel, que me impediu de fazer mal a você, se você não tivesse se apressado e não tivesse vindo ao meu encontro, não teria ficado a Nabal, até o amanhecer, nem um sequer do sexo masculino.

35 Então Davi recebeu da mão de Abigail o que esta lhe havia trazido e lhe disse:

— Volte em paz para a sua casa. Como você pode ver, dei ouvidos ao que você me falou e atendi o seu pedido.

36 Abigail voltou para junto de Nabal. Eis que ele fazia em casa um banquete, como banquete de rei. O seu coração estava alegre, e ele, bastante embriagado. Por isso ela não lhe contou absolutamente nada, até o amanhecer. 37 Pela manhã, quando Nabal já estava livre do vinho, sua mulher lhe contou tudo. Então o coração dele amorteceu dentro do peito, e ele ficou como uma pedra. 38 Passados uns dez dias, o Senhor feriu Nabal, e ele morreu.

39 Quando Davi soube que Nabal havia morrido, disse:

— Bendito seja o Senhor, que pleiteou a causa da afronta que recebi de Nabal e livrou este seu servo de fazer o mal. O Senhor fez com que a maldade de Nabal caísse sobre a própria cabeça dele.

Então Davi mandou um recado a Abigail, dizendo que desejava tomá-la por mulher. 40 Os servos de Davi foram até Abigail, no Carmelo, e lhe disseram:

— Davi nos mandou buscá-la para que a senhora seja sua mulher.

41 Então ela se levantou, se inclinou com o rosto em terra e disse:

— Eis que esta sua serva servirá de criada para lavar os pés dos criados de meu senhor.

42 Abigail se dispôs imediatamente e montou o seu jumento. E ela, acompanhada pelas cinco moças que a serviam, seguiu os mensageiros de Davi, que a recebeu por mulher.

43 Davi também havia tomado por mulher Ainoã de Jezreel, e ambas foram suas mulheres. 44 Saul tinha dado sua filha Mical, mulher de Davi, a Palti, filho de Laís, que era de Galim.
