1 Now the Philistines had taken the ark of God, and they brought it from Eben-ezer unto Ashdod. 2 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon. 3 And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again. 4 And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands lay cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him. 5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon’s house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod, unto this day. 6 But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with tumours, even Ashdod and the borders thereof. 7 And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon as, and upon Dagon our god. 8 They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither. 9 And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great discomfiture: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and tumours brake out upon them. 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people. 11 They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and they said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to its own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly discomfiture throughout all the city, the hand of God was very heavy there. 12 And the men that died not were smitten with the tumours: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

1 Os filisteus tomaram a arca de Deus e a levaram de Ebenézer a Asdode. 2 Os filisteus tomaram a arca de Deus e a colocaram no templo de Dagom, ao lado da imagem de Dagom. 3 Quando os moradores de Asdode se levantaram de madrugada, no dia seguinte, eis que Dagom estava caído com o rosto em terra, diante da arca do Senhor. Eles pegaram a imagem de Dagom e a puseram de volta no seu lugar. 4 Levantando-se de madrugada no dia seguinte, pela manhã, eis que Dagom estava caído de bruços diante da arca do Senhor. A cabeça de Dagom e as duas mãos estavam cortadas e se encontravam na soleira da porta; apenas o tronco dele estava inteiro. 5 Por isso, os sacerdotes de Dagom e todos os que entram no seu templo em Asdode não pisam na soleira da porta, até o dia de hoje.

6 Porém a mão do Senhor castigou duramente os moradores de Asdode, e os assolou, e os feriu com tumores, tanto em Asdode como nos seus arredores. 7 Quando os homens de Asdode viram o que estava acontecendo, disseram:

— A arca do Deus de Israel não deve ficar entre nós, pois a sua mão é dura sobre nós e sobre Dagom, nosso deus.

8 Então enviaram mensageiros e reuniram todos os governantes dos filisteus, e perguntaram:

— Que faremos com a arca do Deus de Israel?

Eles responderam:

— Que a arca do Deus de Israel seja levada até Gate e, depois, de cidade em cidade.

E a levaram até Gate. 9 Depois que a levaram, a mão do Senhor foi contra aquela cidade, causando grande terror; pois feriu os homens daquela cidade, desde o pequeno até o grande; e lhes nasceram tumores. 10 Então enviaram a arca de Deus a Ecrom. Mas, quando a arca chegou lá, os ecronitas exclamaram:

— Trouxeram a arca do Deus de Israel até aqui para matar a nós e a nosso povo.

11 Então enviaram mensageiros e reuniram todos os governantes dos filisteus, e disseram:

— Devolvam a arca do Deus de Israel. Que ela volte ao seu lugar, para que não mate nem a nós nem ao nosso povo.

Porque havia terror de morte em toda a cidade, e a mão de Deus castigou duramente ali. 12 Os homens que não morriam eram atingidos com os tumores, e o clamor da cidade subiu até o céu.
