1 And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision. 2 And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, (now his eyes had begun to wax dim, that he could not see,) 3 and the lamp of God was not yet gone out, and Samuel was laid down to sleep, in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was; 4 that the LORD called Samuel: and he said, Here am I. 5 And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down. 6 And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again. 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him. 8 And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child. 9 Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 And the LORD came, and stood and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel said, Speak; for thy servant heareth. 11 And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle. 12 In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from the beginning even unto the end. 13 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever, for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons did bring a curse upon themselves, and he restrained them not. 14 And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever. 15 And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision. 16 Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he said, Here Am I. 17 And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath spoken unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he spake unto thee. 18 And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good. 19 And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan even to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD. 21 And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.

1 O menino Samuel servia o Senhor, diante de Eli. Naqueles dias, a palavra do Senhor era muito rara; as visões não eram frequentes. 2 Certo dia, o sacerdote Eli, cujos olhos já começavam a escurecer-se, a ponto de não poder ver, estava deitado no lugar de costume. 3 Também Samuel estava deitado no templo do Senhor, onde estava a arca da aliança. Antes que a lâmpada de Deus se apagasse, 4 o Senhor chamou o menino:

— Samuel, Samuel!

Este respondeu:

— Eis-me aqui!

5 Então correu para onde estava Eli e disse:

— Eis-me aqui, pois você me chamou.

Mas Eli respondeu:

— Eu não chamei você. Vá deitar.

Ele foi e se deitou. 6 O Senhor tornou a chamar:

— Samuel!

Este se levantou, foi até Eli e disse:

— Eis-me aqui, pois você me chamou.

Mas Eli respondeu:

— Meu filho, eu não chamei você. Vá deitar.

7 Porém Samuel ainda não conhecia o Senhor, e a palavra do Senhor ainda não havia sido manifestada a ele.

8 E o Senhor chamou Samuel pela terceira vez. Ele se levantou, foi até Eli e disse:

— Eis-me aqui, pois você me chamou.

Então Eli entendeu que era o Senhor quem chamava o menino. 9 Por isso, Eli disse a Samuel:

— Vá deitar. Se alguém chamar, diga: "Fala, Senhor, porque o teu servo ouve."

E Samuel foi para o seu lugar e se deitou.

10 Então o Senhor veio e ali esteve, e chamou como das outras vezes:

— Samuel, Samuel!

Este respondeu:

— Fala, porque o teu servo ouve.

11 E o Senhor disse a Samuel:

— Eis que vou fazer uma coisa tal em Israel, que todos os que a ouvirem ficarão com os dois ouvidos tinindo. 12 Naquele dia farei contra Eli tudo o que eu disse a respeito da casa dele, do começo ao fim. 13 Porque eu já disse a ele que julgarei a sua casa para sempre, pela iniquidade que ele bem conhecia, porque os seus filhos trouxeram maldição sobre si, e ele não os repreendeu. 14 Portanto, jurei à casa de Eli que a sua iniquidade nunca será expiada, nem com sacrifício, nem com oferta de cereais.

15 Samuel ficou deitado até de manhã e, então, abriu os portões da Casa do Senhor. Mas estava com medo de relatar a visão a Eli. 16 Então Eli chamou Samuel e disse:

— Samuel, meu filho!

Ele respondeu:

— Eis-me aqui!

17 Então Eli disse:

— O que foi que o Senhor lhe falou? Peço que você não esconda nada de mim. Que Deus faça com você o que bem quiser se você me esconder alguma coisa de tudo o que ele falou.

18 Então Samuel lhe contou tudo, sem esconder nada. E Eli disse:

— Ele é o Senhor. Que ele faça o que achar melhor.

19 Samuel crescia, e o Senhor estava com ele e não deixou que nenhuma de suas palavras caísse por terra. 20 Todo o Israel, desde Dã até Berseba, reconheceu que Samuel estava confirmado como profeta do Senhor. 21 O Senhor continuou a aparecer em Siló, porque em Siló o Senhor se manifestava a Samuel por meio da palavra do Senhor.
