1 And Josiah kept a passover unto the LORD in Jerusalem: and they killed the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month. 2 And he set the priests in their charges, and encouraged them to the service of the house of the LORD. 3 And he said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the LORD, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; there shall no more be a burden upon your shoulders: now serve the LORD your God, and his people Israel. 4 And prepare yourselves after your fathers’ houses by your courses, according to the writing of David king of Israel, and according to the writing of Solomon his son. 5 And stand in the holy place according to the divisions of the fathers’ houses of your brethren the children of the people, and let there be for each a portion of a fathers’ house of the Levites. 6 And kill the passover, and sanctify yourselves, and prepare for your brethren, to do according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses. 7 And Josiah gave to the children of the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all of them for the passover offerings, unto all that were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bullocks: these were of the king’s substance. 8 And his princes gave for a freewill offering unto the people, to the priests, and to the Levites. Hilkiah and Zechariah and Jehiel, the rulers of the house of God, gave unto the priests for the passover offerings two thousand and six hundred small cattle, and three hundred oxen. 9 Conaniah also, and Shemaiah and Nethanel, his brethren, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, the chiefs of the Levites, gave unto the Levites for the passover offerings five thousand small cattle, and five hundred oxen. 10 So the service was prepared, and the priests stood in their place, and the Levites by their courses, according to the king’s commandment. 11 And they killed the passover, and the priests sprinkled the blood, which they received of their hand, and the Levites flayed them: 12 And they removed the burnt offerings, that they might give them according to the divisions of the fathers’ houses of the children of the people, to offer unto the LORD, as it is written in the book of Moses. And so did they with the oxen. 13 And they roasted the passover with fire according to the ordinance: and the holy offerings sod they in pots, and in caldrons, and in pans, and carried them quickly to all the children of the people. 14 And afterward they prepared for themselves, and for the priests; because the priests the sons of Aaron were busied in offering the burnt offerings and the fat until night: therefore the Levites prepared for themselves, and for the priests the sons of Aaron. 15 And the singers the sons of Asaph were in their place, according to the commandment of David, and Asaph, and Heman, and Jeduthun the king’s seer; and the porters were at every gate: they needed not to depart from their service, for their brethren the Levites prepared for them. 16 So all the service of the LORD was prepared the same day, to keep the passover, and to offer burnt offerings upon the altar of the LORD, according to the commandment of king Josiah. 17 And the children of Israel that were present kept the passover at that time, and the feast of unleavened bread seven days. 18 And there was no passover like to that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet; neither did any of the kings of Israel keep such a passover as Josiah kept, and the priests, and the Levites, and all Judah and Israel that were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 19 In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah was this passover kept. 20 After all this, when Josiah had prepared the temple, Neco king of Egypt went up to fight against Carchemish by Euphrates: and Josiah went out against him. 21 But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house wherewith I have war; and God hath commanded me to make haste: forbear thee from meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not. 22 Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and hearkened not unto the words of Neco, from the month of God, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo. 23 And the archers shot at king Josiah; and the king said to his servants, Have me away; for I am sore wounded. 24 So his servants took him out of the chariot, and put him in the second chariot that he had, and brought him to Jerusalem; and he died, and was buried in the sepulchres of his fathers. And all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah. 25 And Jeremiah lamented for Josiah: and all the singing men and singing women spake of Josiah in their lamentations, unto this day; and they made them an ordinance in Israel: and, behold, they are written in the lamentations. 26 Now the rest of the acts of Josiah, and his good deeds, according to that which is written in the law of the LORD, 27 and his acts, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah.

1 Josias celebrou a Páscoa ao Senhor, em Jerusalém, e eles mataram os cordeiros da Páscoa no décimo quarto dia do primeiro mês. 2 Josias estabeleceu os sacerdotes nos seus cargos e os animou a servirem na Casa do Senhor. 3 Disse aos levitas que ensinavam a todo o Israel e estavam consagrados ao Senhor:

— Ponham a arca sagrada no templo que Salomão, filho de Davi, rei de Israel, construiu. Vocês não precisam mais carregá-la nos ombros. Agora sirvam ao Senhor, o Deus de vocês, e ao seu povo de Israel. 4 Preparem-se segundo as suas famílias, segundo os turnos de vocês, segundo a prescrição de Davi, rei de Israel, e a de Salomão, seu filho. 5 Ministrem no santuário segundo os grupos das famílias de seus irmãos, os filhos do povo; e que haja, para cada grupo, uma parte das famílias dos levitas. 6 Matem os cordeiros da Páscoa, santifiquem-se e façam preparativos para que os seus irmãos comemorem a Páscoa segundo a palavra do Senhor, dada por meio de Moisés.

7 Josias deu ao povo, para todos os que ali estavam, trinta mil cordeiros e cabritos do rebanho, todos para os sacrifícios da Páscoa, além de três mil bois. Tudo isto foi tirado dos bens do rei. 8 Também os seus príncipes fizeram ofertas voluntárias ao povo, aos sacerdotes e aos levitas. Hilquias, Zacarias e Jeiel, chefes da Casa de Deus, deram aos sacerdotes, para os sacrifícios da Páscoa, dois mil e seiscentos cordeiros e cabritos e trezentos bois. 9 Conanias, os seus irmãos Semaías e Natanael, e também Hasabias, Jeiel e Jozabade, chefes dos levitas, apresentaram aos levitas, para os sacrifícios da Páscoa, cinco mil cordeiros e cabritos e quinhentos bois. 10 Assim se preparou o serviço, e os sacerdotes se puseram nos seus lugares com os levitas, pelos seus turnos, segundo a ordem do rei.

11 Então mataram os cordeiros da Páscoa, e os sacerdotes aspergiam o sangue recebido das mãos dos levitas que tiravam a pele dos animais. 12 Puseram de parte o que era para os holocaustos e o deram ao povo, segundo os grupos das famílias, para que estes o oferecessem ao Senhor, como está escrito no Livro de Moisés; e assim fizeram com os bois. 13 Assaram o cordeiro da Páscoa no fogo, segundo o rito. Cozinharam as ofertas sagradas em panelas, em caldeirões e em frigideiras, e as repartiram entre todo o povo. 14 Depois os levitas prepararam o que era deles e dos sacerdotes, porque os sacerdotes, filhos de Arão, se ocuparam, até a noite, com o sacrifício dos holocaustos e da gordura. Foi por isso que os levitas prepararam o que era deles e dos sacerdotes, filhos de Arão. 15 Os cantores, filhos de Asafe, estavam nos seus lugares, segundo o mandado de Davi, de Asafe, de Hemã e de Jedutum, vidente do rei. Também os porteiros estavam junto aos portões; não necessitaram abandonar o seu serviço, porque os seus irmãos, os levitas, preparavam o necessário para eles.

16 Assim se estabeleceu todo o serviço do Senhor, naquele dia, para celebrar a Páscoa e oferecer holocaustos sobre o altar do Senhor, segundo o mandado do rei Josias. 17 Os filhos de Israel que estavam presentes celebraram a Páscoa naquele tempo e a Festa dos Pães sem Fermento, durante sete dias. 18 Nunca se celebrou uma Páscoa como esta em Israel desde os dias do profeta Samuel. E nenhum dos reis de Israel celebrou uma Páscoa como esta que Josias celebrou com os sacerdotes e levitas, e com todo o Judá e Israel, que estavam ali, e com os moradores de Jerusalém. 19 Foi no décimo oitavo ano do reinado de Josias que foi celebrada esta Páscoa.

20 Depois de tudo isto, quando Josias já tinha restaurado o templo, o rei Neco, do Egito, subiu para guerrear em Carquemis, junto ao rio Eufrates. E Josias saiu para lutar contra ele. 21 Então Neco mandou mensageiros a ele, dizendo:

— O que você tem contra mim, rei de Judá? Não venho contra você desta vez, mas contra o reino com o qual estou em guerra. E Deus disse que me apressasse. Pare de se opor a Deus, que está comigo, para que ele não o destrua.

22 Mas Josias não voltou atrás. Pelo contrário, se disfarçou para lutar contra ele. Não deu ouvidos às palavras que Neco lhe havia falado da parte de Deus e foi lutar no vale de Megido. 23 Os flecheiros atiraram contra o rei Josias. Então o rei disse aos seus servos:

— Tirem-me daqui, porque estou gravemente ferido.

24 Seus servos o tiraram do carro de guerra, levaram-no para o segundo carro que ele tinha e o transportaram para Jerusalém. Ele morreu e foi sepultado nos túmulos de seus pais. Todo o Judá e Jerusalém prantearam Josias.

25 Jeremias compôs uma lamentação sobre Josias, e até o dia de hoje todos os cantores e cantoras, nas suas lamentações, se têm referido a Josias. Isto se tornou um costume em Israel, e essas lamentações estão escritas no Livro das Lamentações.

26 Quanto aos demais atos de Josias e às suas obras de misericórdia, segundo está escrito na Lei do Senhor, 27 e aos seus atos, tanto os primeiros como os últimos, está tudo escrito no Livro da História dos Reis de Israel e de Judá.
