1 And it came to pass after this, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them some of the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle. 2 Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea from Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazon-tamar (the same is En-gedi). 3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek unto the LORD; and he proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4 And Judah gathered themselves together, to seek help of the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD. 5 And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court; 6 and he said, O LORD, the God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and art not thou ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? and in thine hand is power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee. 7 Didst not thou, O our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever? 8 And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying, 9 If evil come upon us, the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand before this house, and before thee, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, and thou wilt hear and save. 10 And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned aside from them, and destroyed them not; 11 behold, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit. 12 O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee. 13 And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. 14 Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, the Levite, of the sons of Asaph, came the spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation; 15 and he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat: thus saith the LORD unto you, Fear not ye, neither be dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16 Tomorrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the ascent of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the valley, before the wilderness of Jeruel. 17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed: tomorrow go out against them; for the LORD is with you. 18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before the LORD, worshipping the LORD. 19 And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites, stood up to praise the LORD, the God of Israel, with an exceeding loud voice. 20 And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper. 21 And when he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed them that should sing unto the LORD, and praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and say, Give thanks unto the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever. 22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set liers in wait against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. 23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another. 24 And when Judah came to the watch-tower of the wilderness, they looked upon the multitude; and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and there were none that escaped. 25 And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches and dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in taking of the spoil, it was so much. 26 And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Beracah; for there they blessed the LORD: therefore the name of that place was called The valley of Beracah, unto this day. 27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies. 28 And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD. 29 And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of the countries, when they heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel. 30 So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet: for his God gave him rest round about. 31 And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. 32 And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and turned not aside from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of the LORD. 33 Howbeit the high places were not taken away; neither as yet had the people set their hearts unto the God of their fathers. 34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the history of Jehu the son of Hanani, which is inserted in the book of the kings of Israel. 35 And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel; the same did very wickedly: 36 and he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish: and they made the ships in Ezion-geber. 37 Then Eliezer the son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the LORD hath destroyed thy works. And the ships were broken, that they were not able to go to Tarshish.

1 Depois disto, os filhos de Moabe e os filhos de Amom, com alguns dos meunitas, vieram para fazer guerra contra Josafá. 2 Então vieram alguns que avisaram Josafá, dizendo:

— Uma grande multidão está vindo contra Judá, do outro lado do mar Morto, da Síria. Eis que eles já estão em Hazazom-Tamar, que é En-Gedi.

3 Então Josafá teve medo e decidiu buscar o Senhor; e proclamou um jejum em todo o Judá. 4 Judá se congregou para pedir socorro ao Senhor. Também de todas as cidades de Judá veio gente para buscar o Senhor.

5 Josafá pôs-se em pé, na congregação de Judá e de Jerusalém, na Casa do Senhor, diante do pátio novo, 6 e disse:

— Ó Senhor, Deus de nossos pais, não és tu Deus nos céus? Não és tu que dominas sobre todos os reinos dos povos? Na tua mão está a força e o poder, e não há quem te possa resistir. 7 Ó nosso Deus, acaso não expulsaste os moradores desta terra de diante do teu povo de Israel e não a deste para sempre à posteridade de Abraão, teu amigo? 8 Eles têm morado nela e nela edificaram um santuário ao teu nome, dizendo: 9 "Se algum mal nos sobrevier, espada, juízo, peste ou fome, nós nos apresentaremos diante deste templo e diante de ti, pois o teu nome está neste templo; e clamaremos a ti na nossa angústia, tu nos ouvirás e livrarás." 10 E agora eis que os filhos de Amom e de Moabe e os do monte Seir, cujas terras não permitiste a Israel invadir, quando vinham da terra do Egito, mas deles se desviaram e não os destruíram, 11 eis que eles estão nos recompensando assim: estão vindo para nos expulsar da tua propriedade, que nos deste em herança. 12 Ó nosso Deus, acaso não executarás o teu juízo contra eles? Porque em nós não há força para resistirmos a essa grande multidão que vem contra nós. Não sabemos o que fazer, mas os nossos olhos estão postos em ti.

13 Todos os homens de Judá estavam em pé diante do Senhor, com as suas crianças, as suas mulheres e os seus filhos. 14 Então, no meio da congregação, o Espírito do Senhor veio sobre Jaaziel, filho de Zacarias, filho de Benaia, filho de Jeiel, filho de Matanias, levita, dos filhos de Asafe. 15 Jaaziel disse:

— Escutem com atenção, todo o Judá, moradores de Jerusalém e rei Josafá! Assim diz o Senhor: "Não tenham medo nem se assustem por causa desta grande multidão, pois esta batalha não é de vocês, mas de Deus. 16 Amanhã vocês irão ao encontro deles. Eis que eles virão pela ladeira de Ziz, e vocês os encontrarão no fim do vale, em frente do deserto de Jeruel. 17 Neste encontro, vocês não precisarão lutar. Tomem posição, fiquem parados e vejam a salvação que o Senhor lhes dará, ó Judá e Jerusalém. Não tenham medo nem se assustem. Amanhã, saiam ao encontro deles, porque o Senhor está com vocês."

18 Então Josafá se prostrou com o rosto em terra, e todo o Judá e os moradores de Jerusalém também se prostraram diante do Senhor e o adoraram. 19 Os levitas dos filhos dos coatitas e dos coraítas se levantaram para louvar o Senhor, Deus de Israel, em voz bem alta.

20 Na manhã seguinte, levantaram cedo e foram para o deserto de Tecoa. Ao saírem, Josafá se pôs em pé e disse:

— Escutem, povo de Judá e moradores de Jerusalém! Creiam no Senhor, seu Deus, e vocês estarão seguros; creiam nos profetas do Senhor e vocês serão bem-sucedidos.

21 Depois de se aconselhar com o povo, Josafá designou os que deveriam cantar ao Senhor. Vestidos de ornamentos sagrados e marchando à frente do exército, deveriam louvar a Deus, dizendo:

"Deem graças ao Senhor,

porque a sua misericórdia

dura para sempre."

22 No momento em que eles começaram a cantar e a dar louvores, o Senhor pôs emboscadas contra os filhos de Amom e de Moabe e os do monte Seir que vieram contra Judá, e foram derrotados. 23 Porque os filhos de Amom e de Moabe se levantaram contra os moradores do monte Seir, para os destruir e exterminar. E, quando eles tinham acabado com os moradores de Seir, atacaram e destruíram-se uns aos outros.

24 Quando os homens de Judá chegaram a um lugar alto de onde se pode olhar para o deserto, procuraram ver a multidão, e eis que somente avistaram cadáveres estendidos no chão; não havia nenhum sobrevivente.

25 Josafá e o seu povo foram saquear os despojos e acharam entre os cadáveres riquezas em abundância e objetos preciosos. Pegaram para si mais do que podiam levar e gastaram três dias para saquear o despojo, de tanto que havia. 26 No quarto dia eles se reuniram no vale de Beraca, onde louvaram o Senhor. Por isso, aquele lugar é chamado de vale de Beraca até o dia de hoje.

27 Então todos os homens de Judá e de Jerusalém voltaram, com Josafá à frente deles. Voltaram para Jerusalém com alegria, porque o Senhor lhes tinha dado uma grande alegria com a vitória sobre os seus inimigos. 28 Entraram em Jerusalém ao som de liras, harpas e trombetas, e foram para a Casa do Senhor. 29 O terror da parte de Deus veio sobre todos os reinos daquelas terras, quando ouviram que o Senhor havia lutado contra os inimigos de Israel. 30 Assim, o reino de Josafá teve paz, porque Deus lhe deu repouso por todos os lados.

31 Josafá reinou sobre Judá. Ele tinha trinta e cinco anos de idade quando começou a reinar e reinou vinte e cinco anos em Jerusalém. A mãe dele se chamava Azuba e era filha de Sili. 32 Ele andou no caminho de Asa, seu pai; não se desviou dele e fez o que era reto aos olhos do Senhor. 33 Os lugares altos, porém, não foram destruídos; porque o povo ainda não tinha disposto o coração para com o Deus de seus pais.

34 Quanto aos demais atos de Josafá, tanto os primeiros como os últimos, está tudo escrito nas Crônicas de Jeú, filho de Hanani, que as inseriu na História dos Reis de Israel.

35 Depois disto, Josafá, rei de Judá, se aliou com Acazias, rei de Israel, cuja conduta era ímpia. 36 Aliou-se com ele, para construir navios que fossem a Társis; os navios foram construídos em Eziom-Geber. 37 Então Eliézer, filho de Dodavá, de Maressa, profetizou contra Josafá, dizendo:

— Porque você se aliou com Acazias, o Senhor destruirá o que você construiu.

E os navios se quebraram e não puderam ir a Társis.
