1 And in the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened himself, and took the captains of hundreds, Azariah the son of Jeroham, and Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, and Azariah the son of Obed, and Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri, into covenant with him. 2 And they went about in Judah, and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah, and the heads of fathers’ houses of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem. 3 And all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he said unto them, Behold, the king’s son shall reign, as the LORD hath spoken concerning the sons of David. 4 This is the thing that ye shall do: a third part of you, that come in on the sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites, shall be porters of the doors; 5 and a third part shall be at the king’s house; and a third part at the gate of the foundation: and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the LORD. 6 But let none come into the house of the LORD, save the priests, and they that minister of the Levites; they shall come in, for they are holy: but all the people shall keep the watch of the LORD. 7 And the Levites shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand; and whosoever cometh into the house, let him be slain: and be ye with the king when he cometh in, and when he goeth out. 8 So the Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded: and they took every man his men, those that were to come in on the sabbath, with those that were to go out on the sabbath; for Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses. 9 And Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds the spears, and bucklers, and shields, that had been king David’s, which were in the house of God. 10 And he set all the people, every man with his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, along by the altar and the house, by the king round about. 11 Then they brought out the king’s son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony, and made him king: and Jehoiada and his sons anointed him; and they said, God save the king. 12 And when Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she came to the people into the house of the LORD: 13 and she looked, and, behold, the king stood by his pillar at the entrance, and the captains and the trumpets by the king; and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew with trumpets; the singers also played on instruments of music, and led the singing of praise. Then Athaliah rent her clothes, and said, Treason, treason. 14 And Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them, Have her forth between the ranks; and whoso followeth her, let him be slain with the sword: for the priest said, Slay her not in the house of the LORD. 15 So they made way for her; and she went to the entry of the horse gate to the king’s house: and they slew her there. 16 And Jehoiada made a covenant between himself, and all the people, and the king, that they should be the LORD’S people. 17 And all the people went to the house of Baal, and brake it down, and brake his altars and his images in pieces, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. 18 And Jehoiada appointed the offices of the house of the LORD under the hand of the priests the Levites, whom David had distributed in the house of the LORD, to offer the burnt offerings of the LORD, as it is written in the law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, according to the order of David. 19 And he set the porters at the gates of the house of the LORD, that none which was unclean in any thing should enter in. 20 And he took the captains of hundreds, and the nobles, and the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought down the king from the house of the LORD: and they came through the upper gate unto the king’s house, and set the king upon the throne of the kingdom. 21 So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet: and they slew Athaliah with the sword.

1 No sétimo ano, o sacerdote Joiada se animou e entrou em aliança com os capitães de cem: Azarias, filho de Jeroão, Ismael, filho de Joanã, Azarias, filho de Obede, Maaseias, filho de Adaías, e Elisafate, filho de Zicri. 2 Estes percorreram Judá, congregaram os levitas de todas as cidades de Judá e os chefes das famílias de Israel e vieram para Jerusalém. 3 Toda essa congregação fez aliança com o rei na Casa de Deus. Então Joiada lhes disse:

— Eis que o filho do rei deve reinar, como o Senhor Deus falou a respeito dos filhos de Davi. 4 Isto é o que vocês devem fazer: uma terça parte de vocês, sacerdotes e levitas, que entram de serviço no sábado, servirá de guarda dos portões do templo; 5 outra terça parte estará no palácio real; e a outra terça parte, no Portão do Fundamento; e todo o povo estará nos pátios da Casa do Senhor. 6 Que ninguém entre na Casa do Senhor, a não ser os sacerdotes e os levitas que ministram. Estes poderão entrar, porque são santos, mas todo o povo guardará o preceito do Senhor. 7 Os levitas devem rodear o rei, cada um de armas na mão. E, se alguém quiser entrar no templo, que seja morto. Vocês devem acompanhar o rei aonde quer que ele for.

8 Os levitas e todo o Judá fizeram tudo o que o sacerdote Joiada lhes havia ordenado. Cada um reuniu os seus soldados, tanto os que entravam de serviço no sábado como os que saíam de serviço no sábado, porque o sacerdote Joiada não havia dispensado nenhuma das turmas. 9 O sacerdote Joiada entregou aos capitães de cem as lanças, os escudos e os escudos menores que haviam sido do rei Davi e que estavam na Casa de Deus. 10 Dispôs todo o povo, cada um de armas na mão, desde o lado direito do templo até o seu lado esquerdo, e até o altar, e até o templo, para rodear o rei. 11 Então trouxeram para fora o filho do rei, puseram a coroa na cabeça dele, entregaram-lhe o Livro do Testemunho e o constituíram rei. Joiada e seus filhos o ungiram e gritaram:

— Viva o rei!

12 Quando a rainha Atalia ouviu o barulho do povo que corria e louvava o rei, veio para onde o povo estava, na Casa do Senhor. 13 Olhou, e eis que o rei estava junto à coluna, à entrada. Os capitães e os tocadores de trombetas estavam ao lado do rei, e todo o povo da terra se alegrava e tocava trombetas. Também os cantores com os instrumentos musicais dirigiam o canto de louvores. Então Atalia rasgou as suas roupas e gritou:

— Traição! Traição!

14 Porém o sacerdote Joiada trouxe para fora os capitães que comandavam as tropas e disse-lhes:

— Façam-na sair por entre as fileiras e, se alguém a seguir, matem-no à espada.

Porque o sacerdote tinha dito: "Não a matem na Casa do Senhor." 15 Então eles a prenderam; e ela, pelo caminho da entrada dos cavalos, foi para o palácio real, onde a mataram.

16 Joiada fez uma aliança entre si mesmo, todo o povo e o rei, para serem eles o povo do Senhor. 17 Então todo o povo entrou no templo de Baal e o derrubaram, despedaçando os altares e as imagens de Baal. Matã, o sacerdote de Baal, foi morto diante dos altares. 18 Joiada entregou a superintendência da Casa do Senhor nas mãos dos sacerdotes levitas, que Davi tinha organizado em grupos para cuidarem da Casa do Senhor, para oferecerem os holocaustos do Senhor, como está escrito na Lei de Moisés, com alegria e com canto, segundo a instituição de Davi. 19 Colocou porteiros junto aos portões da Casa do Senhor, para que nela não entrasse ninguém que de alguma forma fosse impuro. 20 Reuniu os capitães de cem, os nobres, os governadores do povo e todo o povo da terra, e todos estes conduziram o rei da Casa do Senhor até o palácio real, passando pelo portão superior. E assentaram Joás no trono do reino. 21 Todo o povo da terra se alegrou, e a cidade ficou tranquila, depois que mataram Atalia à espada.
