1 Yet the darkenesse shall not be according to the affliction that it had when at the first hee touched lightly the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, nor afteward when he was more grieuous by the way of the sea beyond Iorden in Galile of the Gentiles. 2 The people that walked in darkenes haue seene a great light: they that dwelled in the land of the shadowe of death, vpon them hath the light shined. 3 Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased their ioye: they haue reioyced before thee according to the ioye in haruest, and as men reioyce when they deuide a spoyle. 4 For the yoke of their burthen, and the staffe of their shoulder and the rod of their oppressour hast thou broken as in the day of Midian. 5 Surely euery battell of the warriour is with noyse, and with tumbling of garments in blood: but this shall be with burning and deuouring of fire. 6 For vnto vs a childe is borne, and vnto vs a Sonne is giuen: and the gouernement is vpon his shoulder, and he shall call his name Wonderfull, Counseller, The mightie God, The euerlasting Father, The prince of peace, 7 The increase of his gouernement and peace shall haue none end: he shall sit vpon the throne of Dauid, and vpon his kingdome, to order it, and to stablish it with iudgement and with iustice, from hencefoorth, euen for euer: the zeale of the Lord of hostes will performe this. 8 The Lord hath sent a worde into Iaakob, and it hath lighted vpon Israel. 9 And all the people shall knowe, euen Ephraim, and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and presumption of the heart, 10 The brickes are fallen, but we will build it with hewen stones: the wilde figge trees are cut downe, but we will change them into ceders. 11 Neuerthelesse the Lord will raise vp the aduersaries of Rezin against him, and ioyne his enemies together. 12 Aram before and the Philistims behinde, and they shall deuoure Israel with open mouth: yet for all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. 13 For the people turneth not vnto him that smiteth them, neither doe they seeke the Lord of hostes. 14 Therefore will the Lord cut off from Israel head and taile, branche and rush in one day. 15 The ancient and the honorable man, he is the head: and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the taile. 16 For the leaders of the people cause them to erre: and they that are led by them are deuoured. 17 Therefore shall the Lord haue no pleasure in their yong men, neither will he haue compassion of their fatherlesse and of their widowes: for euery one is an hypocrite and wicked, and euery mouth speaketh follie: yet for all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out stil. 18 For wickednesse burneth as a fire: it deuoureth the briers and the thornes and will kindle in the thicke places of the forest: and they shall mount vp like the lifting vp of smoke. 19 By the wrath of the Lord of hostes shall the land be darkened, and the people shall be as the meate of ye fire: no man shall spare his brother. 20 And he shall snatch at the right hand, and be hungrie: and he shall eate on the left hand, and shall not be satisfied: euery one shall eate ye flesh of his owne arme. 21 Manasseh, Ephraim: and Ephraim Manasseh, and they both shall be against Iudah yet for all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

1 Mas para a que estava aflita não continuará a obscuridade. No tempo passado ele tornou desprezível a terra de Zebulom, e a terra de Naftali, porém no tempo vindouro tornará glorioso o caminho do mar além do Jordão, o distrito das nações.

2 O povo que anda nas trevas vê uma grande luz; aos que estão de assento na terra da sombra da morte, a estes raia a luz.

3 Tens multiplicado a nação; tens-lhe aumentado a alegria: alegram-se diante de ti segundo a alegria do tempo da ceifa, como exultam quando repartem os despojos.

4 Pois tens despedaçado o jugo da sua carga e o bordão do seu ombro, que é a vara do seu exator, e como fizeste no dia de Midiã.

5 Todo o calçado de quem anda calçado no tumulto, e toda a capa revolvida em sangue, hão de ser queimados como pasto do fogo.

6 Porque a nós nos é nascido um menino, e a nós nos é dado um filho: o governo está sobre os seus ombros, e ele tem por nome Maravilhoso, Conselheiro, Poderoso Deus, Eterno Pai, Príncipe da Paz.

7 Do aumento do seu governo e da paz não haverá fim sobre o trono de Davi e sobre o seu reino, para o estabelecer e para o firmar com juízo e com justiça desde agora e para sempre. O zelo de Jeová dos exércitos cumprirá isto.

8 O Senhor enviou uma palavra a Jacó e ela caiu sobre Israel.

9 Todo o povo o saberá, isto é, Efraim e os habitantes de Samaria, os quais em soberba e em altivez de coração dizem:

10 Os tijolos têm caído, mas edificaremos com pedra lavrada; os sicômoros têm sido cortados, mas em lugar deles poremos cedros.

11 Jeová, porém, exaltou contra eles os adversários de Rezim e incitou os inimigos dele,

12 os siros do oriente e os filisteus do ocidente, e estes devoraram a Israel à boca aberta. Com tudo isso não se aplacou a sua ira, mas a sua mão ainda está estendida.

13 Todavia o povo não se voltou para quem o feriu, nem buscou a Jeová dos exércitos.

14 Portanto, Jeová num só dia exterminará de Israel a cabeça e a cauda, o ramo da palmeira e o junco.

15 O ancião e o homem acatado, esse é a cabeça, e o profeta que ensina mentiras, esse é a cauda.

16 Os que guiam a este povo, o desencaminham; e os que por eles são guiados são destruídos.

17 Por isso o Senhor não se regozijará nos mancebos dele, nem se compadecerá dos seus órfãos e das suas viúvas; porque todos eles são profanos, e malfeitores, e toda a boca fala loucuras. Com tudo isso não se aplacou a sua ira, mas a sua mão ainda está estendida.

18 A perversidade arde como um fogo; consome os espinhos e os abrolhos; acende-se nas brenhas do bosque, e elas sobem em espessas nuvens de fumo.

19 Pelo furor de Jeová dos exércitos está queimada a terra; o povo também vem a ser como pasto do fogo: ninguém poupa a seu irmão.

20 Devorará da banda direita, e ficará com fome; comerá da banda esquerda, e não se fartará: cada um comerá a carne do seu próprio braço.

21 Manassés será contra Efraim, e Efraim contra Manassés: e estes, juntos, serão contra Judá. Com tudo isso não se aplacou a sua ira, mas a sua mão ainda está estendida.
