1 Alors Salomon dit : L'Eternel a dit, qu'il habiterait dans l'obscurité.
2 Or je t'ai bâti, [ô Eternel!] une maison pour ta demeure, et un domicile fixe, afin que tu y habites éternellement.
3 Et le Roi tourna sa face, et bénit toute l'assemblée d'Israël; car toute l'assemblée d'Israël se tenait [là] debout.
4 Et il dit : Béni [soit] l'Eternel le Dieu d'Israël, qui de sa bouche a parlé à David mon père, et qui aussi l'a accompli par sa puissance, en disant :
5 Depuis le jour que je tirai mon peuple hors du pays d'Egypte, je n'ai choisi aucune ville d'entre toutes les Tribus d'Israël, pour y bâtir une maison, afin que mon Nom y fût; et je n'ai choisi aucun homme pour conducteur de mon peuple d'Israël;
6 Mais j'ai choisi Jérusalem, afin que mon Nom y soit; et j'ai choisi David afin qu'il gouverne mon peuple d'Israël.
7 Or David mon père désirait de bâtir une maison au Nom de l'Eternel le Dieu d'Israël;
8 Mais l'Eternel dit à David mon père : Quant à ce que tu désires de bâtir une maison à mon Nom, tu as bien fait d'avoir eu cette pensée.
9 Néanmoins tu ne bâtiras point cette maison, mais ton fils, qui sortira de tes reins, sera celui qui bâtira cette maison à mon Nom.
10 L'Eternel donc a accompli sa parole, qu'il avait prononcée; j'ai succédé à David mon père, je me suis assis sur le trône d'Israël, selon que l'Eternel en a parlé; j'ai bâti cette maison au Nom de l'Eternel le Dieu d'Israël,
11 Et j'y ai mis l'Arche, dans laquelle est l'alliance de l'Eternel, qu'il a traitée avec les enfants d'Israël.
12 Puis il se tint debout devant l'autel de l'Eternel, en la présence de toute l'assemblée d'Israël, et il étendit ses mains.
13 Car Salomon avait fait un haut dais d'airain, long de cinq coudées, large de cinq coudées, et haut de trois coudées; et l'avait mis au milieu du [grand] parvis; puis il monta dessus, et ayant fléchi les genoux à la vue de toute l'assemblée d'Israël, et étendu ses mains vers les cieux,
14 Il dit : Ô Eternel Dieu d'Israël! Il n'y a ni dans les cieux, ni sur la terre, de Dieu semblable à toi, qui gardes l'alliance et la gratuité à tes serviteurs, lesquels marchent devant toi de tout leur cœur;
15 Qui as tenu à ton serviteur, David mon père, ce dont tu lui avais parlé. Et en effet, ce dont tu lui avais parlé de ta bouche, tu l'as accompli de ta main, comme [il paraît] aujourd'hui.
16 Maintenant donc, ô Eternel Dieu d'Israël! tiens à ton serviteur David mon père ce que tu lui as dit : Il ne te sera jamais retranché de devant ma face [de successeur] pour être assis sur le trône d'Israël; pourvu seulement que tes fils prennent garde à leur voie, afin de marcher dans ma Loi, comme tu as marché devant ma face.
17 Et maintenant, ô Eternel Dieu d'Israël! que ta parole, laquelle tu as prononcée à David ton serviteur soit ratifiée.
18 Mais Dieu habiterait-il effectivement sur la terre avec les hommes? Voilà, les cieux, même les cieux des cieux, ne peuvent point te contenir, et combien moins cette maison que j'ai bâtie!
19 Toutefois, ô Eternel mon Dieu! aie égard à la prière de ton serviteur, et à sa supplication, pour ouïr le cri et la prière que ton serviteur te présente.
20 C'est que tes yeux soient ouverts jour et nuit sur cette maison, qui est le lieu dans lequel tu as promis de mettre ton Nom, en exauçant la prière que ton serviteur te fait en ce lieu-ci.
21 Exauce donc les supplications de ton serviteur, et de ton peuple d'Israël, quand ils te feront des prières en ce lieu-ci; exauce-les des cieux, du lieu de ta demeure; exauce et pardonne.
22 Si quelqu'un pèche contre son prochain, et qu'on lui en défère le serment, pour le faire jurer avec exécration, et que le serment soit fait devant ton autel en cette maison;
23 Exauce-les, des cieux, et exécute [ce que portera l'exécration du serment], et juge tes serviteurs, en donnant au méchant sa récompense, et lui rendant selon ce qu'il aura fait; et en justifiant le juste, lui rendant selon sa justice.
24 Si ton peuple d'Israël est battu par l'ennemi à cause qu'ils auront péché contre toi, et qu'ensuite ils se retournent vers [toi], en invoquant ton Nom, et en te présentant des prières et des supplications dans cette maison;
25 Exauce-les, des cieux, et pardonne le péché de ton peuple d'Israël, et ramène-les dans la terre que tu as donnée et à leurs pères.
26 Quand les cieux seront fermés, et qu'il n'y aura point de pluie, à cause que [ceux d'Israël] auront péché contre toi; s'ils te prient dans ce lieu-ci, et qu'ils réclament ton Nom, [et] s'ils se détournent de leurs péchés, parce que tu les auras affligés;
27 Exauce-les, [des] cieux, et pardonne le péché de tes serviteurs, et de ton peuple d'Israël, lorsque tu leur auras enseigné le bon chemin, par lequel ils doivent marcher; et envoie la pluie sur la terre que tu as donnée à ton peuple en héritage.
28 Quand il y aura dans le pays ou famine, ou mortalité, ou brûlure, ou nielle, ou sauterelles, ou vermisseaux; et quand leurs ennemis les assiégeront jusques dans leur propre pays, ou qu'il y aura quelque plaie, ou quelque maladie,
29 Quiconque de tout ton peuple d'Israël te fera des prières et des supplications, selon qu'ils auront reconnu chacun sa plaie et sa douleur, et que chacun aura étendu ses mains vers cette maison;
30 Alors exauce-les, des cieux, du domicile arrêté de ta demeure, et pardonne, et rends à chacun selon toutes ses œuvres, parce que tu auras connu son cœur; car tu connais, toi seul, le cœur des hommes;
31 Afin qu'ils te craignent, pour marcher dans tes voies durant tout le temps qu'ils vivront sur la terre que tu as donnée à nos pères.
32 Et lors même que l'étranger, qui ne sera pas de ton peuple d'Israël, sera venu d'un pays éloigné, à cause de ton Nom qui est grand, et à cause de ta main forte, et de ton bras étendu, lors, [dis-je], qu'il sera venu, et qu'il te fera requête dans cette maison;
33 Exauce-le, des cieux, du domicile arrêté de ta demeure, et accorde à cet étranger sa demande; afin que tous les peuples de la terre connaissent ton Nom, et qu'ils te craignent, comme ton peuple d'Israël [te craint]; et qu'ils connaissent que ton Nom est invoqué dans cette maison que j'ai bâtie.
34 Quand ton peuple sera sorti en guerre contre ses ennemis, par le chemin par lequel tu les auras envoyés, s'ils te font leur prière, en regardant vers cette ville que tu as choisie, et vers cette maison que j'ai bâtie à ton Nom;
35 Alors exauce des cieux leur prière et leur supplication, et maintiens leur droit.
36 Quand ils auront péché contre toi, ( car il n'y a point d'homme qui ne pèche) et qu'étant irrité contr'eux, tu les auras livrés à leurs ennemis, et que ceux qui les auront pris les auront emmenés captifs en quelque pays, soit loin, soit près;
37 Et que dans le pays auquel ils auront été menés captifs, ils seront revenus à eux-mêmes, et que se repentant ils te supplient au pays de leur captivité, en disant : Nous avons péché, nous avons fait iniquité, et nous avons agi criminellement.
38 Quand donc ils se seront tournés vers toi de tout leur cœur, et de toute leur âme, dans le pays de leur captivité, où on les aura menés captifs, et qu'ils t'auront offert leur supplication, en regardant vers leur pays que tu as donné à leurs pères, et vers cette ville que tu as choisie, et vers cette maison que j'ai bâtie à ton Nom;
39 Exauce des cieux, du domicile arrêté de ta demeure, leurs prières et leurs supplications, et maintiens leur droit, et pardonne à ton peuple qui aura péché contre toi.
40 Maintenant, ô mon Dieu! je te prie que tes yeux soient ouverts, et que tes oreilles soient attentives à la prière qu'on te fera en ce lieu-ci.
41 Maintenant donc, ô Eternel Dieu! lève-toi, [pour entrer] en ton repos, toi et l'Arche de ta force. Eternel Dieu! que tes Sacrificateurs soient revêtus de salut, et que tes bien-aimés se réjouissent du bien [que tu leur auras fait].
42 Ô Eternel Dieu! ne fais point tourner en arrière la face de ton Oint, et souviens-toi des gratuités dont tu as usé envers David ton serviteur.
1 Then said Solomon, The LORD has said that he would dwell in the thick darkness.
2 But I have built a house of habitation for you, and a place for your dwelling forever.
3 And the king turned his face, and blessed the whole congregation of Israel: and all the congregation of Israel stood.
4 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, who has with his hands fulfilled that which he spoke with his mouth to my father David, saying,
5 Since the day that I brought forth my people out of the land of Egypt I chose no city among all the tribes of Israel to build a house in, that my name might be there; neither chose I any man to be a ruler over my people Israel:
6 But I have chosen Jerusalem, that my name might be there; and have chosen David to be over my people Israel.
7 Now it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of the LORD God of Israel.
8 But the LORD said to David my father, Since it was in your heart to build a house for my name, you did well in that it was in your heart:
9 Nevertheless you shall not build the house; but your son who shall come forth out of your body, he shall build the house for my name.
10 The LORD therefore has performed his word that he has spoken: for I have risen up in the place of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and have built the house for the name of the LORD God of Israel.
11 And in it have I put the ark, in which is the covenant of the LORD, that he made with the children of Israel.
12 And he stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands:
13 For Solomon had made a bronze platform, five cubits long, and five cubits wide, and three cubits high, and had set it in the midst of the court: and upon it he stood, and kneeled down upon his knees before all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven,
14 And said, O LORD God of Israel, there is no God like you in the heaven, nor in the earth; who keeps covenant, and shows mercy unto your servants, that walk before you with all their hearts:
15 You who have kept with your servant David my father that which you have promised him; and spoke with your mouth, and have fulfilled it with your hand, as it is this day.
16 Now therefore, O LORD God of Israel, keep with your servant David my father that which you have promised him, saying, There shall not fail you a man in my sight to sit upon the throne of Israel; if only your children take heed to their way to walk in my law, as you have walked before me.
17 Now then, O LORD God of Israel, let your word be verified, which you have spoken unto your servant David.
18 But will God indeed dwell with men on the earth? behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain you; how much less this house which I have built!
19 Have respect therefore to the prayer of your servant, and to his supplication, O LORD my God, to hearken unto the cry and the prayer which your servant prays before you:
20 That your eyes may be open upon this house day and night, upon the place of which you have said that you would put your name there; to hearken unto the prayer which your servant prays toward this place.
21 Hearken therefore unto the supplications of your servant, and of your people Israel, which they shall make toward this place: hear you from your dwelling place, even from heaven; and when you hear, forgive.
22 If a man sins against his neighbor, and is made to take an oath, and the oath is made before your altar in this house;
23 Then hear from heaven, and act, and judge your servants, by requiting the wicked, by bringing his conduct upon his own head; and by justifying the righteous, by giving to him according to his righteousness.
24 And if your people Israel are defeated before the enemy, because they have sinned against you; and shall return and confess your name, and pray and make supplication before you in this house;
25 Then hear from the heavens, and forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them again unto the land which you gave to them and to their fathers.
26 When the heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against you; yet if they pray toward this place, and confess your name, and turn from their sin, when you do afflict them;
27 Then hear from heaven, and forgive the sin of your servants, and of your people Israel, when you have taught them the good way, in which they should walk; and send rain upon your land, which you have given unto your people for an inheritance.
28 If there is famine in the land, if there is pestilence, if there is blight, or mildew, locusts, or caterpillars; if their enemies besiege them in the cities of their land; whatsoever plague or whatsoever sickness there is:
29 Then whatsoever prayer or whatsoever supplication shall be made by any man, or by all your people Israel, when each one shall know his own affliction and his own grief, and shall spread forth his hands in this house:
30 Then hear from heaven your dwelling place, and forgive, and render unto every man according unto all his ways, whose heart you know; (for you alone know the hearts of the children of men:)
31 That they may fear you, to walk in your ways, as long as they live in the land which you gave unto our fathers.
32 Moreover concerning the foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, but has come from a far country for your great name’s sake, and your mighty hand, and your outstretched arm; if they come and pray in this house;
33 Then hear from the heavens, even from your dwelling place, and do according to all that the foreigner calls to you for; that all people of the earth may know your name, and fear you, as does your people Israel, and may know that this house which I have built is called by your name.
34 If your people go out to war against their enemies by the way that you shall send them, and they pray unto you toward this city which you have chosen, and the house which I have built for your name;
35 Then hear from the heavens their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their cause.
36 If they sin against you, (for there is no man who sins not,) and you are angry with them, and deliver them over to their enemies, and they carry them away captives unto a land far or near;
37 Yet if they come to themselves in the land where they are carried captive, and turn and pray unto you in the land of their captivity, saying, We have sinned, we have done wrong, and have dealt wickedly;
38 If they return to you with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their captivity, where they have carried them captives, and pray toward their land, which you gave unto their fathers, and toward the city which you have chosen, and toward the house which I have built for your name:
39 Then hear from the heavens, even from your dwelling place, their prayer and their supplications, and maintain their cause, and forgive your people who have sinned against you.
40 Now, my God, let, I beseech you, your eyes be open, and let your ears be attentive unto the prayer that is made in this place.
41 Now therefore arise, O LORD God, to your resting place, you, and the ark of your strength: let your priests, O LORD God, be clothed with salvation, and let your saints rejoice in goodness.
42 O LORD God, turn not away the face of your anointed: remember the mercies of David your servant.
