1 Or Salomon résolut de bâtir une maison au Nom de l'Eternel, et une Maison Royale.

2 Et il fit un dénombrement de soixante et dix mille hommes qui portaient les faix, et de quatre-vingt mille qui coupaient le bois sur la montagne, et de trois mille six cents qui étaient commis sur eux.

3 Et Salomon envoya vers Hiram Roi de Tyr, pour lui dire : Comme tu as fait avec David mon père, et comme tu lui as envoyé des cèdres pour se bâtir une maison afin d'y habiter, [fais-en de même avec moi].

4 Voici, je m'en vais bâtir une maison au Nom de l'Eternel mon Dieu, pour la lui sanctifier, afin de faire fumer devant lui le parfum des odeurs aromatiques, [et lui présenter] les pains de proposition, lesquels on pose continuellement devant lui, et les holocaustes du matin et du soir, pour les Sabbats, et pour les nouvelles lunes, et pour les Fêtes solennelles de l'Eternel notre Dieu; ce qui est perpétuel en Israël.

5 Or la maison que je m'en vais bâtir sera grande; car notre Dieu est grand au dessus de tous les dieux.

6 Mais qui est-ce qui aura le pouvoir de lui bâtir une maison, si les cieux, même les cieux des cieux ne le peuvent contenir? Et qui suis-je moi, pour lui bâtir une maison, si ce n'est pour faire des parfums devant lui?

7 C'est pourquoi envoie-moi maintenant quelque homme qui s'entende à travailler en or, en argent, en airain, en fer, en écarlate, en cramoisi, et en pourpre, et qui sache graver, [afin qu'il soit] avec les hommes experts que j'ai avec moi en Judée, et à Jérusalem, lesquels David mon père a préparés.

8 Envoie-moi aussi du Liban des bois de cèdre, de sapin, et d'Algummim; car je sais que tes serviteurs s'entendent bien à couper le bois du Liban; et voilà, mes serviteurs [seront] avec les tiens.

9 Et qu'on m'apprête du bois en grande quantité; car la maison que je m'en vais bâtir [sera] grande, et merveilleuse.

10 Et je donnerai à tes serviteurs qui couperont le bois, vingt mille Cores de froment foulé, vingt mille Cores d'orge, vingt mille Baths de vin, et vingt mille Baths d'huile.

11 Et Hiram, Roi de Tyr, [répondit] par écrit, et manda à Salomon : Parce que l'Eternel a aimé son peuple il t'a établi Roi sur eux.

12 Et Hiram dit : Béni [soit] l'Eternel le Dieu d'Israël! qui a fait les cieux et la terre, de ce qu'il a donné au Roi David un fils sage, prudent et intelligent, qui doit bâtir une maison à l'Eternel, et une Maison Royale.

13 Je t'envoie donc maintenant un homme expert et habile, [qui a] été à Hiram mon père;

14 Fils d'une femme issue de la Tribu de Dan, et duquel le père [est] Tyrien, sachant travailler en or, en argent, en airain, en fer, en pierres, et en bois, en écarlate, en pourpre, en fin lin, et en cramoisi; et sachant faire toute sorte de gravure, et de dessin de toutes les choses qu'on lui proposera, avec les hommes d'esprit que tu as, et ceux qu'a eus mon Seigneur David ton père.

15 Et maintenant que mon Seigneur envoie à ses serviteurs le froment, l'orge, l'huile et le vin qu'il a dit;

16 Et nous couperons du bois du Liban, autant qu'il t'en faudra, et nous te le mettrons par radeaux sur la mer de Japho, et tu les feras monter à Jérusalem.

17 Salomon donc dénombra tous les hommes étrangers qui [étaient] au pays d'Israël, après le dénombrement que David son père [en] avait fait, et on en trouva cent cinquante-trois mille six cents.

18 Et il en établit soixante-dix mille qui portaient les faix, quatre-vingt mille qui coupaient le bois sur la montagne, et trois mille six cents, commis pour faire travailler le peuple.

1 And Solomon determined to build a house for the name of the LORD, and a house for his kingdom.

2 And Solomon selected threescore and ten thousand men to bear burdens, and fourscore thousand to quarry in the mountains, and three thousand and six hundred to oversee them.

3 And Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, As you did deal with David my father, and did send him cedars to build him a house to dwell in, even so deal with me.

4 Behold, I build a house to the name of the LORD my God, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual showbread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of the LORD our God. This is an ordinance forever to Israel.

5 And the house which I build will be great: for great is our God above all gods.

6 But who is able to build him a house, seeing the heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him a house, except only to burn sacrifices before him?

7 Send me now therefore a man skillful to work in gold, and in silver, and in bronze, and in iron, and in purple, and crimson, and blue, and that has skill to engrave with the skillful men that are with me in Judah and in Jerusalem, whom David my father did provide.

8 Send me also cedar trees, fir trees, and algum trees, out of Lebanon: for I know that your servants have skill to cut timber in Lebanon; and, behold, my servants shall be with your servants,

9 Even to prepare me timber in abundance: for the house which I am about to build shall be wonderfully great.

10 And, behold, I will give to your servants, the hewers that cut timber, twenty thousand cors of ground wheat, and twenty thousand cors of barley, and twenty thousand baths of wine, and twenty thousand baths of oil.

11 Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing, which he sent to Solomon, Because the LORD has loved his people, he has made you king over them.

12 Huram said moreover, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, that made heaven and earth, who has given to David the king a wise son, endued with prudence and understanding, that might build a house for the LORD, and a house for his kingdom.

13 And now I have sent a skillful man, endued with understanding, Huramabi,

14 The son of a woman of the daughters of Dan, and his father was a man of Tyre, skilful to work in gold, and in silver, in bronze, in iron, in stone, and in wood, in purple, in blue, and in fine linen, and in crimson; also to engrave any manner of engraving, and to execute every design which shall be given to him, with your skillful men, and with the skillful men of my lord David your father.

15 Now therefore the wheat, and the barley, the oil, and the wine, which my lord has spoken of, let him send unto his servants:

16 And we will cut wood out of Lebanon, as much as you shall need: and we will bring it to you in rafts by sea to Joppa; and you shall carry it up to Jerusalem.

17 And Solomon numbered all the sojourners that were in the land of Israel, according to the census by which David his father had numbered them; and there were found a hundred and fifty thousand and three thousand and six hundred.

18 And he set threescore and ten thousand of them to be bearers of burdens, and fourscore thousand to quarry in the mountains, and three thousand and six hundred overseers to make the people work.
