1 Le peuple qui marchait dans les ténèbres a vu une grande lumière, et la lumière a relui sur ceux qui habitaient au pays de l'ombre de la mort.

2 Tu as multiplié la nation, tu lui as accru la joie, ils se réjouiront devant toi, comme on se réjouit en la maison, comme on s'égaye quand on partage le butin.

3 Car tu as mis en pièces le joug dont il était chargé, et le bâton dont on lui battait ordinairement les épaules, et la verge de son exacteur, comme au jour de Madian.

4 Parce que tout choc de ceux qui se battent le fait avec tumulte, et que les vêtements sont vautrés dans le sang; mais ceci sera [comme] un embrasement, quand le feu dévore quelque chose.

5 Car l'enfant nous est né, le Fils nous a été donné, et l'empire a été posé sur son épaule, et on appellera son nom, l'Admirable, le Conseiller, le [Dieu] Fort et puissant, le Père d'éternité, le Prince de paix.

6 Il n'y aura point de fin à l'accroissement de l'empire, et à la prospérité sur le trône de David, et sur son règne, pour l'affermir et l'établir en jugement et en justice, dès maintenant et à toujours; la jalousie de l'Eternel des armées fera cela.

7 Le Seigneur a envoyé la parole en Jacob, et elle est tombée en Israël.

8 Et tout le peuple, [savoir] Ephraïm, et les habitants de Samarie le connaîtront, et [néanmoins] ils diront avec orgueil et avec un cœur hautain;

9 Les briques sont tombées, mais nous bâtirons de pierres de taille; les figuiers sauvages ont été coupés, mais nous les changerons en cèdres.

10 Après que l'Eternel aura élevé les ennemis de Retsin au-dessus de lui, il amènera aussi pêle-mêle les ennemis d'Israël;

11 La Syrie du côté d'Orient, et les Philistins du côté d'Occident, qui dévoreront Israël à gueule ouverte. Malgré tout cela il ne fera point cesser sa colère, mais sa main sera encore étendue.

12 Parce que le peuple ne se sera point retourné jusqu'à celui qui le frappait, et qu'ils n'auront pas recherché l'Eternel des armées.

13 A cause de cela l'Eternel retranchera d'Israël en un seul jour la tête et la queue, le rameau et le jonc.

14 L'Ancien et l'homme d'autorité; c'est la tête; et le Prophète enseignant mensonge, c'est la queue.

15 Ceux donc qui font accroire à ce peuple qu'il est heureux, se trouveront des séducteurs; et ceux à qui on fait accroire qu'ils sont heureux, seront perdus.

16 C'est pourquoi le Seigneur ne prendra point plaisir à ses jeunes gens d'élite, et n'aura point pitié de ses orphelins, ni de ses veuves; car tous, tant qu'ils sont, ce sont des hypocrites, et des malins, et toute bouche ne profère que des infamies. Malgré tout cela, il ne fera point cesser sa colère, mais sa main sera encore étendue.

17 Car la méchanceté est embrasée comme un feu, elle dévorera les ronces et les épines, et s'allumera dans les lieux les plus épais de la forêt, qui se perdront en s'élevant, comme une fumée qui monte.

18 La terre sera obscurcie à cause de la fureur de l'Eternel des armées, et le peuple sera comme la pâture du feu; l'un n'aura point compassion de l'autre.

19 Il ravira à main droite, et il aura faim; il mangera à main gauche, et ils ne seront point rassasiés; chacun mangera la chair de son bras.

20 Manassé [dévorera] Ephraïm, et Ephraïm [dévorera] Manassé; eux ensemble seront contre Juda. Malgré tout cela il ne fera point cesser sa colère, mais sa main sera encore étendue.

1 Nevertheless the gloom shall not be such as was in her distress, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more heavily oppress her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.

2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them has the light shined.

3 You have multiplied the nation, and increased the joy: they joy before you according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

4 For you have broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.

5 For every warrior’s boot used in battle, and every garment rolled in blood; this shall be used for burning and as fuel for the fire.

6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

8 The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it has fallen upon Israel.

9 And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria, that say in the pride and arrogance of heart,

10 The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with hewn stones: the sycamores are cut down, but we will replace them into cedars.

11 Therefore the LORD shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and join his enemies together;

12 The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with an open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

13 For the people turn not unto him that strikes them, neither do they seek the LORD of hosts.

14 Therefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, palm branch and reed, in one day.

15 The elder and honorable, he is the head; and the prophet that teaches lies, he is the tail.

16 For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led by them are destroyed.

17 Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for everyone is a hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaks folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

18 For wickedness burns as the fire: it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the rising of smoke.

19 Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land burned, and the people shall be as the fuel for the fire: no man shall spare his brother.

20 And he shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall devour on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:

21 Manasseh shall devour Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh: and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
