Jeremias 9

1 Auē, me he wai tōku māhunga,

me he puna roimata ōku kanohi,

kia tangihia ai e ahau

ngā tūpāpaku o te tamāhine

a tāku iwi i te ao, i te pō!

2 Auē, me he tīhokahoka tōku,

he mea nā te tira haere i te koraha!

Kia whakarērea ai e ahau tāku iwi,

kia mawehe ai i roto i a rātou,

he hunga pūremu katoa nei hoki rātou,

he huihuinga nō te hunga tinihanga.

3 "Me te mea he kōpere nā rātou ō rātou arero

e whakapikoa ana hei kōrero teka;

kua tupu kaha ake rātou i runga i te whenua,

kāhore ia mō te pono;

engari e koni atu ana i te kino ki te kino,

kāhore hoki ō rātou mōhio ki ahau," e ai tā Ihowā.

4 "Kia tūpato i ō koutou hoa, e tēnei, e tēnei,

kaua e whakawhirinaki ki te tuakana, ki te teina.

Nō te mea he māminga rawa tā ngā tuākana, tā ngā tēina katoa;

kei runga anō i te ngautuarā te haere o ngā hoa katoa.

5 Ka tinihangatia e rātou tōna hoa, tōna hoa,

kāhore hoki he pono o te kōrero;

kua whakaakona e rātou ō rātou arero ki te kōrero teka;

ruha noa rātou i te mahinga i te hē.

6 Kei waenga tinihanga koe e noho ana;

nā te tinihanga rātou te pai ai ki te mōhio ki ahau,"

e ai tā Ihowā.

7 Heoi, ko te kupu tēnei a Ihowā o ngā mano:

"Nanā, ka whakarewa ahau i a rātou, ka whakamātau i a rātou;

me pēhea hoki ahau, ko te tamāhine nei ia a tāku iwi?

8 Ko te rite i tō rātou arero kei te kōpere whakamate;

he kōrero tinihanga tāna.

He kōrero pai tā te māngai o tētahi ki tōna hoa,

kei roto ia i tōna ngākau e whanga ana mōna.

9 E kore ianei ahau e whiu i a rātou mō ēnei mea? e ai tā Ihowā;

e kore ianei tōku wairua

e rapu utu i te iwi pēnei?"

10 He whakaaro ki ngā maunga i ara ai tāku tangi,

tāku auē, he whakaaro ki ngā puninga o te koraha tāku uhunga;

nō te mea kua wera, kāhore tētahi tangata e tika nā reira,

kāhore e rangona te reo o ngā kararehe;

ko ngā manu o te rangi, ko ngā kararehe,

pūtere atu ana, kua riro.

11 "Ka meinga hoki e ahau a Hiruhārama hei pūranga,

hei nohoanga kurī mohoao,

ka meinga anō e ahau ngā pā o Hūrā kia ururuatia,

tē ai he tangata."

12 Ko wai te tangata whakaaro nui e mātau ana ki tēnei? I kōrerotia anō ki a wai e te māngai o Ihowā, māna e whakaatu? He aha rā te whenua i whakangaromia ai, i wera ai, ānō ko te koraha, kāhore he tangata e tika ana i reira?

13 Anō rā ko Ihowā: "Mō rātou i whakarere i tāku ture i hoatu e ahau ki tō rātou aroaro, ā, kīhai i whakarongo ki tōku reo, kīhai i haere i taua ara. 14 Nā, haere ana rātou i ngā tikanga mārō o ō rātou ngākau; kei te whai i ngā Paarimi i whakaakona nei e ō rātou mātua ki a rātou." 15 Heoi, ko te kupu tēnei a Ihowā o ngā mano, a te Atua o Īharaira: "Tēnei ahau te whāngai nei i a rātou, i tēnei iwi, ki te taru kawa, te whakainu nei i a rātou ki te wai kawa. 16 Ka whakamararatia anō rātou e ahau ki roto ki ngā iwi kīhai nei i mōhiotia e rātou, e ō rātou mātua; ka ungā anō e ahau te hoari hei whai i a rātou ā poto noa rātou i ahau."

17 Ko te kupu tēnei a Ihowā o ngā mano:

"Whakaaroa e koutou, karangatia hoki ngā wāhine tangi kia haere mai;

unga tāngata ki ngā wāhine whakaaro nui kia haere mai.

18 Kia hohoro anō te ara o tā rātou tangi mō tātou,

kia tārere ai ngā roimata o ō tātou kanohi,

kia maringi iho ai ngā wai o ō tātou kamo.

19 Nō te mea e rangona ana te reo tangi i Hiona:

‘Anō tō tātou pāhuatanga!

Nui atu tō tātou whakamā,

nō te mea kua mahue i a tātou te whenua,

nō te mea kua turakina mai e rātou ō tātou nohoanga.’ "

20 Whakarongo rāia, e ngā wāhine, ki te kupu a Ihowā,

kia riro anō i ō koutou taringa te kupu a tōna māngai.

Whakaakona ā koutou tamāhine ki te tangi,

ngā hoa hoki o tēnei, o tēnei, ki te uhunga.

21 Nō te mea kua tae ake te mate ki roto ki ō tātou matapihi,

kua tomo ki ō tātou whare kīngi,

hautope atu ai i ngā kōhungahunga i waho,

i ngā taitamariki anō hoki i ngā huanui.

22 Kōrero! "Ko te kupu tēnei a Ihowā:

‘Tērā ngā tinana o ngā tāngata e hinga

ānō he whakawairākau ki te mata o te māra,

ānō he kutanga wīti i muri i te kaitapahi,

ā, kāhore he kaikohi.’ "

23 Ko te kupu tēnei a Ihowā:

"Kaua te tangata whakaaro nui e whakamanamana ki tōna whakaaro nui,

kaua hoki te mārohirohi e whakamanamana ki tōna mārohirohi;

kaua te tangata taonga e whakamanamana ki ōna taonga;

24 engari, ko tēnei hei whakamanamananga mā te tangata whakamanamana,

arā kua whai whakaaro ia, kua mōhio ki ahau,

ko Ihowā ahau, ko te kaimahi o te mahi tohu, o te whakawā,

o te tika i runga i te whenua;

ko āku hoki ēnei e whakaahuareka ai,"

e ai tā Ihowā.

25 "Nanā, kei te haere mai ngā rā," e ai tā Ihowā, "e whiua ai e ahau te hunga katoa i kotia i roto i tō rātou kotingakore: 26 ko Īhipa, ko Hūrā, ko Ēroma, ko ngā tama a Āmona, ko Moapa, ko te hunga katoa e noho ana i te koraha, e whakaihoa nei ngā tapa o ō rātou makawe. He mea kokotikore hoki ngā iwi katoa; ko te whare katoa anō o Īharaira, he mea kokotikore te ngākau."

1 Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people! 2 Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging-place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they are all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men. 3 And they bend their tongue, as it were their bow, for falsehood; and they are grown strong in the land, but not for truth: for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith Jehovah. 4 Take ye heed every one of his neighbor, and trust ye not in any brother; for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbor will go about with slanders. 5 And they will deceive every one his neighbor, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies; they weary themselves to commit iniquity. 6 Thy habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, saith Jehovah.

7 Therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts, Behold, I will melt them, and try them; for how else should I do, because of the daughter of my people? 8 Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, but in his heart he layeth wait for him. 9 Shall I not visit them for these things? saith Jehovah; shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

10 For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the pastures of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none passeth through; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the birds of the heavens and the beasts are fled, they are gone. 11 And I will make Jerusalem heaps, a dwelling-place of jackals; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.

12 Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and who is he to whom the mouth of Jehovah hath spoken, that he may declare it? wherefore is the land perished and burned up like a wilderness, so that none passeth through? 13 And Jehovah saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein, 14 but have walked after the stubbornness of their own heart, and after the Baalim, which their fathers taught them; 15 therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink. 16 I will scatter them also among the nations, whom neither they nor their fathers have known; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them.

17 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for the skilful women, that they may come: 18 and let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters. 19 For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How are we ruined! we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because they have cast down our dwellings. 20 Yet hear the word of Jehovah, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth; and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbor lamentation. 21 For death is come up into our windows, it is entered into our palaces; to cut off the children from without, and the young men from the streets. 22 Speak, Thus saith Jehovah, The dead bodies of men shall fall as dung upon the open field, and as the handful after the harvestman; and none shall gather them.

23 Thus saith Jehovah, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches; 24 but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he hath understanding, and knoweth me, that I am Jehovah who exerciseth lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith Jehovah.

25 Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will punish all them that are circumcised in their uncircumcision: 26 Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that have the corners of their hair cut off, that dwell in the wilderness; for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in heart.
