1 Houve um homem de Ramataim-Zofim, da região montanhosa de Efraim, cujo nome era Elcana, filho de Jeroão, filho de Eliú, filho de Toú, filho de Zufe, efraimita. 2 Elcana tinha duas mulheres: uma se chamava Ana, e a outra se chamava Penina. Penina tinha filhos; Ana, porém, não tinha.

3 Todos os anos esse homem ia da sua cidade para adorar e sacrificar ao Senhor dos Exércitos, em Siló, onde Hofni e Fineias, os dois filhos de Eli, eram sacerdotes do Senhor. 4 No dia em que Elcana oferecia o seu sacrifício, ele dava porções deste a Penina, sua mulher, e a todos os seus filhos e filhas. 5 A Ana, porém, dava uma porção dobrada, porque ele a amava, mesmo que o Senhor a tivesse deixado estéril. 6 Penina, sua rival, a provocava excessivamente para a irritar, porque o Senhor a tinha deixado sem filhos. 7 Isso acontecia ano após ano. Todas as vezes que Ana ia à Casa do Senhor, a outra a irritava. Por isso Ana se punha a chorar e não comia nada. 8 Então Elcana, seu marido, lhe disse:

— Ana, por que você está chorando? E por que não quer comer? E por que está tão triste? Será que eu não sou melhor para você do que dez filhos?

9 Certa vez após terem comido e bebido em Siló, Ana se levantou, quando o sacerdote Eli estava sentado na sua cadeira, junto a um pilar do templo do Senhor. 10 E Ana, com amargura de alma, orou ao Senhor e chorou muito. 11 Ela fez um voto, dizendo:

— Senhor dos Exércitos, se de fato olhares para a aflição da tua serva, e te lembrares de mim, e não te esqueceres da tua serva, e lhe deres um filho homem, eu o dedicarei ao Senhor por todos os dias da sua vida, e sobre a cabeça dele não passará navalha.

12 Ana continuava a orar diante do Senhor, e o sacerdote Eli começou a observar o movimento dos lábios dela, 13 porque Ana só falava em seu coração. Os seus lábios se moviam, porém não se ouvia voz nenhuma. Por isso Eli pensou que ela estava embriagada 14 e lhe disse:

— Até quando você vai ficar embriagada? Trate de ficar longe do vinho!

15 Porém Ana respondeu:

— Não, meu senhor! Eu sou uma mulher angustiada de espírito. Não bebi vinho nem bebida forte. Apenas estava derramando a minha alma diante do Senhor. 16 Não pense que esta sua serva é ímpia. Eu estava orando assim até agora porque é grande a minha ansiedade e a minha aflição.

17 Então Eli disse:

— Vá em paz, e que o Deus de Israel lhe conceda o que você pediu.

18 Ana respondeu:

— Que eu possa encontrar favor aos seus olhos.

Então ela seguiu o seu caminho, comeu alguma coisa, e o seu semblante já não era triste.

19 Eles se levantaram de madrugada e adoraram diante do Senhor. Depois, voltaram para casa, em Ramá. Elcana teve relações com Ana, sua mulher, e o Senhor se lembrou dela. 20 Ana ficou grávida e, passado o devido tempo, teve um filho, a quem deu o nome de Samuel, pois dizia:

— Do Senhor o pedi.

21 Elcana, seu marido, foi com toda a sua casa para oferecer ao Senhor o sacrifício anual e para cumprir o seu voto. 22 Ana, porém, não foi. Ela disse a seu marido:

— Quando o menino for desmamado, eu o levarei para ser apresentado ao Senhor e para lá ficar para sempre.

23 Elcana, seu marido, respondeu:

— Faça o que achar melhor. Fique aqui até desmamá-lo. E que o Senhor confirme a promessa que você fez.

Assim, Ana ficou em casa e amamentou o filho, até que o desmamou. 24 Depois de o ter desmamado, ela o levou consigo, com um novilho de três anos, uma medida de farinha e um odre de vinho, e o apresentou à Casa do Senhor, em Siló. O menino ainda era muito pequeno. 25 Depois de terem sacrificado o novilho, levaram o menino a Eli. 26 E Ana disse:

— Ah! Meu senhor, tão certo como você vive, eu sou aquela mulher que esteve aqui ao seu lado, orando ao Senhor. 27 Era por este menino que eu orava, e o Senhor Deus me concedeu o pedido que eu fiz. 28 Por isso também o entrego ao Senhor. Por todos os dias que viver, será dedicado ao Senhor.

E ali eles adoraram o Senhor.

1 Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim of the hill-country of Ephraim. And his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, and Ephraimite.2 And he had two wives: the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of other Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.3 And this man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice to LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests to LORD, were there.4 And when the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions,5 but to Hannah he gave a double portion, for he loved Hannah, but LORD had shut up her womb.6 And her rival provoked her greatly, to make her fret, because LORD had shut up her womb.7 And [as] he did so year by year when she went up to the house of LORD, so she provoked her. Therefore she wept, and did not eat.8 And Elkanah her husband said to her, Hannah, why do thou weep? And why do thou not eat? And why is thy heart grieved? Am not I better to thee than ten sons?9 So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest was sitting upon his seat by the door-post of the temple of LORD.10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to LORD, and wept much.11 And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou will indeed look on the affliction of thy handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thy handmaid, but will give to thy handmaid a man-child, then I will give him to LORD all t12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before LORD, that Eli noticed her mouth.13 Now Hannah, she spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.14 And Eli said to her, How long will thou be drunken? Put away thy wine from thee.15 And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I poured out my soul before LORD.16 Count not thy handmaid for an iniquitous woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and my provocation have I spoken until now.17 Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant thy petition that thou have asked of him.18 And she said, Let thy handmaid find favor in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and ate, and her countenance was no more [sad].19 And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and LORD remembered her.20 And it came to pass, when the time came about, that Hannah conceived, and bore a son. And she called his name Samuel, [saying], Because I have asked him of LORD.21 And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, [Not] until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before LORD, and abide there forever.23 And Elkanah her husband said to her, Do what seems good to thee. Remain until thou have weaned him, only LORD establish his word. So the woman remained and gave her son suck, until she weaned him.24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of meal, and a bottle of wine, and brought him to the house of LORD in Shiloh, and the child was young.25 And they killed the bullock, and brought the child to Eli.26 And she said, Oh, my lord, as thy soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by thee here, praying to LORD.27 I prayed for this child, and LORD has given me my petition which I asked of him.28 Therefore also I have granted him to LORD; as long as he lives he is granted to LORD. And he worshipped LORD there.
