1 Os zifeus foram falar com Saul, em Gibeá, e disseram:

— Não é verdade que Davi está escondido no monte Haquila, em frente de Jesimom?

2 Então Saul se levantou e foi ao deserto de Zife, em busca de Davi, levando consigo três mil homens escolhidos de Israel. 3 Saul acampou no monte Haquila, em frente de Jesimom, junto ao caminho, porém Davi ficou no deserto. Quando ouviu dizer que Saul vinha à sua procura no deserto, 4 enviou espias e soube que Saul, de fato, tinha chegado. 5 Davi se levantou e foi ao lugar onde Saul estava acampado. Viu o lugar onde dormiam Saul e Abner, filho de Ner, comandante do seu exército. Saul dormia dentro do acampamento, e o povo estava acampado ao redor dele.

6 Davi perguntou a Aimeleque, o heteu, e a Abisai, filho de Zeruia, irmão de Joabe:

— Quem irá comigo ao arraial de Saul?

Abisai respondeu:

— Eu irei com você.

7 Assim, Davi e Abisai foram, de noite, ao acampamento. E eis que Saul estava deitado, dormindo. A lança dele estava fincada na terra, perto da sua cabeça. Abner e o povo estavam deitados ao redor dele. 8 Então Abisai disse a Davi:

— Hoje Deus entregou o seu inimigo nas suas mãos. Deixe que eu vá, agora, encravá-lo com a lança, ao chão, com um só golpe; não será preciso um segundo golpe.

9 Davi, porém, respondeu a Abisai:

— Não o mate, pois quem pode estender a mão contra o ungido do Senhor e ficar inocente?

10 Davi continuou:

— Tão certo como vive o Senhor Deus, ele mesmo o matará; ou chegará o dia de sua morte, ou, indo para a guerra, será morto em combate. 11 O Senhor me livre de estender a mão contra o seu ungido! Agora, porém, pegue a lança que está perto da cabeça dele e o jarro de água, e vamos embora.

12 Então Davi pegou a lança e o jarro de água que estavam perto da cabeça de Saul, e eles foram embora. Ninguém viu, nem ficou sabendo, nem acordou. Todos dormiam, porque havia caído sobre eles um profundo sono, vindo da parte do Senhor.

13 Quando Davi tinha passado para o outro lado, pôs-se no alto do monte ao longe, de maneira que havia uma grande distância entre eles. 14 Então gritou para o povo e para Abner, filho de Ner, dizendo:

— Você não vai responder, Abner?

Então Abner respondeu:

— Quem é você, que está aí gritando para o rei?

15 Davi respondeu:

— Você não é homem? E quem é igual a você em Israel? Então por que não protegeu o seu senhor, o rei? Porque alguém do povo foi até aí para matar o rei, seu senhor. 16 Não é bom isso que você fez! Tão certo como vive o Senhor Deus, vocês merecem morrer, vocês que não protegeram seu senhor, o ungido do Senhor Deus. Agora vejam onde está a lança do rei e o jarro de água que estava perto da cabeça dele.

17 Então Saul reconheceu a voz de Davi e disse:

— É esta a sua voz, meu filho Davi?

E Davi respondeu:

— Sim, é a minha voz, ó rei, meu senhor.

18 Disse mais:

— Por que o meu senhor está perseguindo o seu servo? O que foi que eu fiz? E que maldade se acha nas minhas mãos? 19 E agora, ó rei, meu senhor, por favor escute as palavras deste seu servo. Se é o Senhor Deus que o está incitando contra mim, que ele aceite uma oferta. Mas, se são os filhos dos homens, que sejam malditos diante do Senhor! Porque eles me expulsaram hoje, para que eu não tenha parte na herança do Senhor, como que dizendo: "Vá e sirva outros deuses." 20 Agora, que o meu sangue não seja derramado longe desta terra do Senhor. Porque o rei de Israel saiu em busca de uma pulga, como quem persegue uma perdiz nos montes.

21 Então Saul disse:

— Pequei! Volte, meu filho Davi, pois não mais lhe farei mal, porque hoje a minha vida foi preciosa aos seus olhos. Eu tenho agido como um louco e cometi um erro muito grande.

22 Davi respondeu:

— Aqui está a lança, ó rei. Que um dos seus rapazes venha aqui pegá-la. 23 E que o Senhor Deus recompense cada um pela sua justiça e lealdade. Porque hoje o Senhor Deus o havia entregado nas minhas mãos, porém eu não quis estendê-las contra o ungido do Senhor. 24 Assim como hoje a sua vida foi de grande valor aos meus olhos, assim também seja a minha vida aos olhos do Senhor Deus, e que ele me livre de toda a angústia.

25 Então Saul disse a Davi:

— Bendito seja você, meu filho Davi! Porque você fará grandes coisas e certamente será bem-sucedido.

Então Davi seguiu o seu caminho, e Saul voltou para casa.

1 And the Ziphites came to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Does not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert?2 Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.3 And Saul encamped in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert by the way. But David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.4 David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul definitely came.5 And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had encamped. And David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his army. And Saul lay within the place of the wagons, and the people were encamped6 Then David answered and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down with thee.7 So David and Abishai came to the people by night. And, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the place of the wagons with his spear stuck in the ground at his head, and Abner and the people lay round about him.8 Then said Abishai to David, God has delivered up thine enemy into thy hand this day. Now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear to the earth at one stroke, and I will not smite him the second time.9 And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not, for who can put forth his hand against LORD's anointed, and be guiltless?10 And David said, As LORD lives, LORD will smite him, or his day shall come to die, or he shall go down into battle and perish.11 LORD forbid that I should put forth my hand against LORD's anointed. But now take, I pray thee, the spear that is at his head, and the cruse of water, and let us go.12 So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul's head, and they got away. And no man saw it, nor knew it, neither did any awake, for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from LORD was fallen upon them.13 Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of the mountain afar off, a great space being between them.14 And David cried out to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, Answer thou not, Abner? Then Abner answered and said, Who are thou that cries to the king?15 And David said to Abner, Are not thou a [valiant] man? And who is like to thee in Israel? Why then have thou not kept watch over thy lord the king? For there came one of the people in to destroy the king thy lord.16 This thing is not good that thou have done. As LORD lives, ye are worthy to die because ye have not kept watch over your lord, LORD's anointed. And now see where the king's spear is, and the cruse of water that was at his head.17 And Saul knew David's voice, and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, my lord, O king.18 And he said, Why does my lord pursue after his servant? For what have I done? Or what evil is in my hand?19 Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it be LORD who has stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering, but if it be the sons of men, cursed be they before LORD. For they have d20 Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth away from the presence of LORD. For the king of Israel has come out to seek a flea, as when [a man] hunts a partridge in the mountains.21 Then Saul said, I have sinned. Return, my son David, for I will no more do thee harm because my life was precious in thine eyes this day. Behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.22 And David answered and said, Behold the spear, O king! Let then one of the young men come over and fetch it.23 And LORD will render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness, inasmuch as LORD delivered thee into my hand today, and I would not put forth my hand against LORD's anointed.24 And, behold, as thy life was much set by this day in my eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of LORD, and let him deliver me out of all tribulation.25 Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David. Thou shall both do mightily, and shall surely prevail. So David went his way, and Saul returned to his place.
