1 Os filisteus reuniram as suas tropas para a guerra em Socó, que fica em Judá. Eles acamparam entre Socó e Azeca, em Efes-Damim. 2 Saul e os homens de Israel se reuniram e acamparam no vale de Elá, e ali ordenaram a batalha contra os filisteus. 3 Os filisteus estavam num monte e os israelitas estavam no outro monte, ficando o vale no meio deles.

4 Então do arraial dos filisteus saiu um guerreiro chamado Golias. Ele era da cidade de Gate e tinha quase três metros de altura. 5 Trazia na cabeça um capacete de bronze e vestia uma couraça de escamas de bronze, que pesava uns sessenta quilos. 6 Trazia caneleiras de bronze nas pernas e um dardo de bronze sobre os ombros. 7 A haste da sua lança era como o eixo do tecelão, e a ponta da sua lança era de ferro e pesava mais de sete quilos. E diante dele ia o escudeiro. 8 Golias parou e gritou para as tropas de Israel:

— Para que vocês saíram para formar a linha de batalha? Não sou eu filisteu, e vocês, servos de Saul? Escolham entre vocês um homem que venha lutar comigo. 9 Se ele puder lutar comigo e me matar, seremos servos de vocês. Mas, se eu o vencer e o matar, vocês serão nossos servos e nos servirão.

10 E o filisteu continuou:

— Hoje eu desafio as tropas de Israel. Deem-me um homem, para que lute comigo.

11 Quando Saul e todo o Israel ouviram estas palavras do filisteu, ficaram assustados e com muito medo.

12 Davi era filho daquele efrateu de Belém de Judá cujo nome era Jessé e que tinha oito filhos. Nos dias de Saul, Jessé já era bastante idoso entre os homens. 13 Os três filhos mais velhos de Jessé tinham ido com Saul para a guerra. Esses três, que tinham ido para a guerra, se chamavam Eliabe, que era o primogênito; Abinadabe, que era o segundo; e Samá, que era o terceiro. 14 Davi era o mais moço; só os três mais velhos seguiram Saul. 15 Davi, porém, ia a Saul e voltava, para apascentar as ovelhas de seu pai, em Belém.

16 O filisteu vinha de manhã e de tarde, apresentando-se durante quarenta dias.

17 Jessé disse a Davi, seu filho:

— Peço que você leve para os seus irmãos uma medida deste trigo tostado e estes dez pães. Corra e leve isso para os seus irmãos, no acampamento. 18 Porém estes dez queijos, leve-os para o comandante de mil. Veja como os seus irmãos estão passando e traga uma prova de que estão bem. 19 Saul, eles e todos os homens de Israel estão no vale de Elá, lutando contra os filisteus.

20 No dia seguinte, Davi se levantou de madrugada, deixou as ovelhas com um guarda, carregou o que havia sido preparado e partiu, como Jessé lhe havia ordenado. Chegou ao acampamento quando as tropas estavam saindo para colocar-se em ordem de combate e, aos gritos, chamavam para a batalha. 21 Os israelitas e filisteus se puseram em ordem, fileira contra fileira.

22 Davi deixou o que havia trazido aos cuidados do guarda da bagagem e correu para a batalha. Quando chegou lá, perguntou a seus irmãos se estavam bem. 23 Enquanto Davi ainda falava com eles, eis que vinha subindo do exército dos filisteus o guerreiro, cujo nome era Golias, o filisteu de Gate. E falou as mesmas coisas que havia falado anteriormente. E Davi escutou.

24 Todos os israelitas, vendo aquele homem, fugiam dele, com muito medo. 25 E diziam uns aos outros:

— Vocês viram aquele homem? Ele veio para afrontar Israel. O rei dará muitas riquezas para quem matar aquele homem. Também lhe dará a filha em casamento, e à casa de seu pai isentará de impostos em Israel.

26 Então Davi perguntou aos homens que estavam perto dele:

— O que será dado ao homem que matar esse filisteu e livrar Israel de tal afronta? Quem é esse filisteu incircunciso para afrontar os exércitos do Deus vivo?

27 E o povo lhe repetiu as mesmas palavras, dizendo:

— É isso que será dado ao homem que o matar.

28 Eliabe, o irmão mais velho, ouviu Davi falando com aqueles homens. Ele ficou irado com Davi e disse:

— Por que você veio para cá? E com quem você deixou aquelas poucas ovelhas no deserto? Sei que você é presunçoso e mau. Você veio aqui só para ver a batalha.

29 Davi respondeu:

— O que foi que eu fiz agora? Apenas fiz uma pergunta.

30 Então Davi se desviou dele na direção de outro e fez a mesma pergunta. E o povo lhe deu a mesma resposta de antes.

31 Alguns homens que tinham ouvido as palavras de Davi foram anunciá-las a Saul, que mandou chamar Davi. 32 Davi disse a Saul:

— Que ninguém desanime por causa dele. Este seu servo irá e lutará contra esse filisteu.

33 Porém Saul disse a Davi:

— Você não poderá ir contra esse filisteu para lutar contra ele. Você ainda é jovem, e ele é guerreiro desde a sua mocidade.

34 Davi respondeu:

— Este seu servo apascentava as ovelhas do pai. Quando vinha um leão ou um urso e levava um cordeiro do rebanho, 35 eu saía atrás dele, batia nele e livrava o cordeiro da sua boca. Se ele se levantava contra mim, eu o agarrava pela barba e o golpeava até matá-lo. 36 Este seu servo matou tanto o leão como o urso. Este filisteu incircunciso será como um deles, porque afrontou os exércitos do Deus vivo.

37 E Davi continuou:

— O Senhor me livrou das garras do leão e das garras do urso; ele me livrará das mãos desse filisteu.

Então Saul disse a Davi:

— Vá, e que o Senhor esteja com você.

38 Saul vestiu Davi com a sua própria armadura, pôs um capacete de bronze na cabeça dele, e o vestiu com uma couraça. 39 Davi cingiu a espada sobre a armadura e tentou andar, pois jamais a havia usado. Então Davi disse a Saul:

— Não posso andar com isto, porque nunca o usei.

E Davi tirou aquilo de sobre si. 40 Pegou o seu cajado na mão, escolheu cinco pedras lisas do ribeiro, e as pôs no alforje de pastor, que trazia consigo. E, com a sua funda na mão, foi na direção do filisteu.

41 O filisteu também vinha caminhando e se aproximava de Davi, tendo à frente dele o seu escudeiro. 42 O filisteu olhou e, vendo Davi, o desprezou, porque era apenas um moço ruivo e de boa aparência. 43 O filisteu disse a Davi:

— Será que eu sou um cachorro, para que você venha contra mim com pedaços de pau?

E, pelos seus deuses, o filisteu amaldiçoou Davi. 44 E disse mais a Davi:

— Venha aqui, que eu darei a sua carne às aves dos céus e aos animais do campo.

45 Davi, porém, disse ao filisteu:

— Você vem contra mim com espada, com lança e com escudo. Eu, porém, vou contra você em nome do Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus dos exércitos de Israel, a quem você afrontou. 46 Hoje mesmo o Senhor entregará você nas minhas mãos. Eu o matarei, cortarei a sua cabeça e hoje mesmo darei os cadáveres do arraial dos filisteus às aves dos céus e às feras da terra. E toda a terra saberá que há Deus em Israel. 47 Toda esta multidão saberá que o Senhor salva, não com espada, nem com lança. Porque do Senhor é a guerra, e ele entregará todos vocês nas nossas mãos.

48 E aconteceu que, quando o filisteu se levantou e começou a se aproximar de Davi, este se apressou e, deixando as suas fileiras, correu de encontro ao filisteu. 49 Davi meteu a mão no alforje, tirou dali uma pedra e, com a sua funda, a atirou contra o filisteu, atingindo-o na testa. A pedra se encravou na testa, e ele caiu com o rosto no chão. 50 Assim Davi derrotou o filisteu, com uma funda e com uma pedra. Ele o derrubou e o matou. Não havia nenhuma espada na mão de Davi. 51 Por isso, Davi correu e, lançando-se sobre o filisteu, pegou a espada dele, tirou-a da bainha e o matou, cortando com ela a cabeça dele.

Quando os filisteus viram que o seu herói estava morto, fugiram. 52 Então os homens de Israel e Judá se levantaram, deram um grito e perseguiram os filisteus até Gate e até os portões de Ecrom. E os filisteus caíram feridos pelo caminho, de Saaraim até Gate e até Ecrom. 53 Então os filhos de Israel voltaram da perseguição aos filisteus e saquearam os acampamentos deles. 54 Davi pegou a cabeça do filisteu e a levou para Jerusalém. Porém as armas dele Davi colocou em sua própria tenda.

55 Quando Saul viu Davi saindo para encontrar-se com o filisteu, perguntou a Abner, o comandante do exército:

— Abner, aquele jovem é filho de quem?

Abner respondeu:

— Juro pela sua vida, ó rei, que não sei.

56 E o rei disse:

— Então pergunte de quem esse jovem é filho.

57 Quando Davi voltou, depois de matar o filisteu, Abner o tomou e o levou à presença de Saul. Davi ainda trazia na mão a cabeça do filisteu. 58 Então Saul lhe perguntou:

— Meu jovem, de quem você é filho?

Davi respondeu:

— Sou filho de seu servo Jessé, o belemita.

1 Now the Philistines gathered their armies together to battle. And they were gathered together at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and encamped in the vale of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.3 And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, and there was a valley between them.4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.5 And he had a helmet of brass upon his head, and he was clad with a coat of mail. And the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.6 And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a javelin of brass between his shoulders.7 And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and his spear's head [weighed] six hundred shekels of iron. And his shield-bearer went before him.8 And he stood and cried out to the armies of Israel, and said to them, Why have ye come out to set your battle in array? Am I not a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? Choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.9 If he is able to fight with me, and kill me, then we will be your servants, but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then ye shall be our servants, and serve us.10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day. Give me a man, that we may fight together.11 And when Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem-judah, whose name was Jesse. And he had eight sons, and the man was an old man in the days of Saul, stricken [in years] among men.13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the battle. And the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the first-born, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.14 And David was the youngest, and the three eldest followed Saul.15 Now David went to and fro from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.17 And Jesse said to David his son, Take now for thy brothers an ephah of this parched grain, and these ten loaves, and carry [them] quickly to the camp to thy brothers.18 And bring these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand. And look how thy brothers fare, and take their pledge.19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.20 And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the place of the wagons as the army which was going forth to the fight shouted for the battle.21 And Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army.22 And David left his baggage in the hand of the keeper of the baggage, and ran to the army, and came and saluted his brothers.23 And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke according to the same words, and David heard them.24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were greatly afraid.25 And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man who has come up? Surely to defy Israel he has come up. And it shall be, that the man who kills him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and m26 And David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man who kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the l27 And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that kills him.28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men. And Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why have thou come down? And with whom have thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and t29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?30 And he turned away from him toward another, and spoke after the same manner, and the people answered him again after the former manner.31 And when the words were heard which David spoke, they repeated them before Saul, and he sent for him.32 And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him. Thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.33 And Saul said to David, Thou are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for thou are but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.34 And David said to Saul, Thy servant was keeping his father's sheep, and when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock,35 I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth. And when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and killed him.36 Thy servant smote both the lion and the bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.37 And David said, LORD who delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said to David, Go, and LORD shall be with thee.38 And Saul clad David with his apparel, and he put a helmet of brass upon his head, and he clad him with a coat of mail.39 And David girded his sword upon his apparel, and he attempted to go, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them. And David put them off of him.40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose for him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the shepherd's bag which he had, even in his wallet. And his sling was in his hand, and he drew near to the Philistine.41 And the Philistine came on and drew near to David, and the man who bore the shield went before him.42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him, for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.43 And the Philistine said to David, Am I a dog, that thou come to me with sticks? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh to the birds of the heavens, and to the beasts of the field.45 Then David said to the Philistine, Thou come to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a javelin, but I come to thee in the name of LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou have defied.46 This day LORD will deliver thee into my hand, and I will smite thee, and take thy head from off thee. And I will give the dead bodies of the armies of the Philistines this day to the birds of the heavens, and to the wild beasts of47 and that all this assembly may know that LORD saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is LORD's, and he will give you into our hand.48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew near to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took from there a stone, and slung it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead. And the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell upon his face to the earth.50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David.51 Then David ran, and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath of it, and killed him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines until thou come to Gai, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath, and to Ekron.53 And the sons of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they plundered their camp.54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.55 And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the army, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul lives, O king, I cannot tell.56 And the king said, Inquire thou whose son the stripling is.57 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.58 And Saul said to him, Whose son are thou, young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.
