1 O Senhor disse a Samuel:

— Até quando você terá pena de Saul, se eu o rejeitei como rei de Israel? Encha um chifre de azeite e ponha-se a caminho; vou enviar você a Jessé, o belemita, porque escolhi um dos filhos dele para ser rei.

2 Samuel respondeu:

— Como posso fazer isso? Saul ficará sabendo e me matará.

Então o Senhor disse:

— Leve um novilho e diga: "Vim para oferecer um sacrifício ao Senhor." 3 Convide Jessé para o sacrifício. Eu lhe mostrarei o que você deve fazer, e você ungirá para mim aquele que eu indicar.

4 Samuel fez o que o Senhor tinha dito e foi a Belém. Os anciãos da cidade saíram ao encontro dele, tremendo, e perguntaram:

— É de paz a sua vinda?

5 Samuel respondeu:

— Sim, é de paz. Vim oferecer sacrifício ao Senhor. Consagrem-se e venham comigo ao sacrifício.

Então ele consagrou Jessé e os filhos dele e os convidou para o sacrifício. 6 Aconteceu que, quando eles chegaram, Samuel viu Eliabe e disse consigo:

— Certamente está diante do Senhor o seu ungido.

7 Porém o Senhor disse a Samuel:

— Não olhe para a sua aparência nem para a sua altura, porque eu o rejeitei. Porque o Senhor não vê como o ser humano vê. O ser humano vê o exterior, porém o Senhor vê o coração.

8 Então Jessé chamou Abinadabe e o fez passar diante de Samuel, que disse:

— Nem a este o Senhor escolheu.

9 Então Jessé fez passar Samá. Porém Samuel disse:

— Tampouco a este o Senhor escolheu.

10 Assim Jessé fez passar os seus sete filhos diante de Samuel. Porém Samuel disse a Jessé:

— O Senhor não escolheu nenhum destes.

11 E perguntou a Jessé:

— Esses são todos os seus filhos?

Jessé respondeu:

— Ainda falta um, o mais moço; ele está apascentando as ovelhas.

Então Samuel disse a Jessé:

— Mande chamá-lo, pois não nos sentaremos à mesa sem que ele venha.

12 Então mandou chamá-lo e o fez entrar. Davi era ruivo, de belos olhos e boa aparência. E o Senhor disse a Samuel:

— Levante-se e unja-o, pois este é ele.

13 Samuel pegou o chifre do azeite e ungiu Davi no meio de seus irmãos. E, daquele dia em diante, o Espírito do Senhor se apossou de Davi. Então Samuel se levantou e foi para Ramá.

14 Depois que o Espírito do Senhor se retirou de Saul, um espírito mau, vindo da parte do Senhor, o atormentava. 15 Então os servos de Saul lhe disseram:

— Eis que, agora, um espírito mau, enviado por Deus, está atormentando o senhor, ó rei. 16 Por isso, mande que estes seus servos, que estão em sua presença, busquem um homem que saiba tocar harpa. Assim, quando o espírito mau, enviado por Deus, vier sobre o senhor, o homem dedilhará a harpa e o senhor se sentirá melhor.

17 E Saul disse aos seus servos:

— Então procurem um homem que saiba tocar bem harpa e tragam-no para cá.

18 Um dos moços disse:

— Conheço um filho de Jessé, o belemita, que sabe tocar harpa. Ele é forte e valente, homem de guerra, fala com sensatez e tem boa aparência; e o Senhor Deus está com ele.

19 Saul enviou mensageiros a Jessé, dizendo:

— Mande-me o seu filho Davi, aquele que está com as ovelhas.

20 Então Jessé pegou um jumento e o carregou de pão, um odre de vinho e um cabrito, e enviou-os a Saul por meio de Davi, seu filho. 21 Assim Davi foi a Saul e esteve diante dele. Saul gostou muito dele e fez dele o seu escudeiro. 22 Saul mandou dizer a Jessé:

— Deixe que Davi fique aqui, pois alcançou favor diante de mim.

23 E sempre que o espírito mau, enviado por Deus, vinha sobre Saul, Davi pegava a harpa e a dedilhava. Então Saul sentia alívio e se achava melhor, e o espírito mau se retirava dele.

1 And LORD said to Samuel, How long will thou mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill thy horn with oil, and go. I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for me a king among2 And Samuel said, How do I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me. And LORD said, Take a heifer with thee, and say, I have come to sacrifice to LORD.3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show thee what thou shall do. And thou shall anoint to me him whom I name to thee.4 And Samuel did that which LORD spoke, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, Do thou come peaceably?5 And he said, Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to LORD. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.6 And it came to pass, when they came, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely LORD's anointed is before him.7 But LORD said to Samuel, Do not look on his countenance, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For [LORD sees] not as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance, but LORD looks on the heart.8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither has LORD chosen this man.9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither has LORD chosen this man.10 And Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, LORD has not chosen these men.11 And Samuel said to Jesse, Are all thy sons here? And he said, There remains yet the youngest, and, behold, he is keeping the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and fetch him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and of a beautiful countenance, and fine to look upon. And LORD said, Arise, anoint him, for this is he.13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.14 Now the Spirit of LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from LORD troubled him.15 And Saul's servants said to him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubles thee.16 Let our lord now command thy servants, who are before thee, to seek out a man who is a skilful player on the harp. And it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou sh17 And Saul said to his servants, Provide for me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.18 Then one of the young men answered, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is skilful in playing, and a mighty man of valor, and a man of war, and prudent in speech, and a comely man, and LORD is with him19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, Send to me David thy son, who is with the sheep.20 And Jesse took a donkey with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son to Saul.21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him. And he loved him greatly, and he became his armor bearer.22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.23 And it came to pass, when the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand. So Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
