1 Salomão resolveu edificar o templo ao nome do Senhor, bem como um palácio para o seu reino. 2 Salomão designou setenta mil homens para levarem as cargas, oitenta mil para talharem pedras nas montanhas e três mil e seiscentos para dirigirem a obra. 3 Salomão mandou dizer a Hirão, rei de Tiro:

— Como você fez com Davi, meu pai, e lhe mandou cedros, para edificar o palácio em que morasse, assim também faça comigo. 4 Eis que estou para edificar um templo ao nome do Senhor, meu Deus, para consagrá-lo a ele, queimar diante dele incenso aromático e lhe apresentar o pão contínuo da proposição e os holocaustos da manhã e da tarde, nos sábados, nas Festas da Lua Nova e nas festividades do Senhor, nosso Deus. Esta é uma obrigação perpétua para Israel. 5 O templo que edificarei será grande, porque o nosso Deus é maior do que todos os deuses. 6 No entanto, quem seria capaz de lhe edificar um templo, visto que os céus e até o céu dos céus não o podem conter? E quem sou eu para lhe edificar um templo, a não ser para queimar incenso diante dele? 7 Portanto, mande-me, agora, um homem que saiba trabalhar em ouro, em prata, em bronze, em ferro, em obras de púrpura, de carmesim e de pano azul; que saiba fazer obras de entalhe juntamente com os peritos que estão comigo em Judá e em Jerusalém, os quais Davi, meu pai, contratou. 8 Mande-me também madeira de cedros, ciprestes e sândalo do Líbano; porque bem sei que os seus servos sabem cortar madeira no Líbano. Eis que os meus servos estarão com os seus servos, 9 para me prepararem muita madeira, porque o templo que edificarei será grande e maravilhoso. 10 Aos seus servos, cortadores da madeira, darei duas mil toneladas de trigo batido, duas mil toneladas de cevada, quatrocentos mil litros de vinho e quatrocentos mil litros de azeite.

11 Hirão, rei de Tiro, respondeu por uma carta que enviou a Salomão, dizendo:

— O Senhor Deus ama o seu povo e, por isso, ele o constituiu rei sobre esse povo.

12 Hirão também disse:

— Bendito seja o Senhor, Deus de Israel, que fez os céus e a terra, que deu ao rei Davi um filho sábio, dotado de prudência e entendimento, que edifique um templo ao Senhor e um palácio para o seu próprio reino. 13 E agora vou enviar um homem sábio de grande entendimento, a saber, Hirão-Abi, 14 filho de uma mulher das filhas de Dã e cujo pai era da cidade de Tiro. Ele sabe trabalhar em ouro, em prata, em bronze, em ferro, em pedras e em madeira, em obras de púrpura, de pano azul e de linho fino e em obras de carmesim. É hábil para toda obra de entalhe e para elaborar qualquer plano que lhe for apresentado, juntamente com os seus peritos e os peritos de Davi, meu senhor, seu pai. 15 Agora, que o meu senhor mande para os seus servos o trigo, a cevada, o azeite e o vinho de que falou. 16 E nós cortaremos tanta madeira no Líbano quanta você precisar e a faremos chegar em jangadas, pelo mar, a Jope, e dali você a levará para Jerusalém.

17 Salomão levantou o censo de todos os homens estrangeiros que havia na terra de Israel, segundo o censo que Davi, o seu pai, havia feito; e acharam-se cento e cinquenta e três mil e seiscentos. 18 Destes, Salomão designou setenta mil para levarem as cargas, oitenta mil para talharem pedras nas montanhas e três mil e seiscentos para dirigirem o trabalho do povo.

1 Now Solomon purposed to build a house for the name of LORD, and a house for his kingdom.2 And Solomon counted out seventy thousand men to bear burdens, and eighty thousand men who were hewers in the mountains, and three thousand and six hundred to oversee them.3 And Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, As thou dealt with David my father, and sent him cedars to build for him a house to dwell therein, [so with me].4 Behold, I am about to build a house for the name of LORD my God, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him incense of sweet spices, and for the continual showbread, and for the burnt-offerings morning and evening, on the Sabbat5 And the house which I build is great. For our God is great above all gods.6 But who is able to build for him a house, seeing heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain him? Who am I then, that I should build for him a house, except only to burn incense before him?7 Now therefore send me a man skilful to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, and in iron, and in purple, and crimson, and blue, and who knows how to engrave engravings, [to be] with the skilful men who are with me in Judah and8 Send to me also cedar trees, fir trees, and algum trees, out of Lebanon. For I know that thy servants know how to cut timber in Lebanon. And, behold, my servants shall be with thy servants,9 even to prepare for me timber in abundance. For the house which I am about to build shall be great and wonderful.10 And, behold, I will give to thy servants, the hewers who cut timber, twenty thousand measures of beaten wheat, and twenty thousand measures of barley, and twenty thousand baths of wine, and twenty thousand baths of oil.11 Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing, which he sent to Solomon, Because LORD loves his people, he has made thee king over them.12 Huram said moreover, Blessed be LORD, the God of Israel, that made heaven and earth, who has given to David the king a wise son, endued with discretion and understanding, that should build a house for LORD, and a house for his king13 And now I have sent a skilful man, endued with understanding, of Huram my father's,14 the son of a woman of the daughters of Dan. And his father was a man of Tyre, skilful to work in gold, and in silver, in brass, in iron, in stone, and in timber, in purple, in blue, and in fine linen, and in crimson, also to engrav15 Now therefore the wheat and the barley, the oil and the wine, which my lord has spoken of, let him send to his servants.16 And we will cut wood out of Lebanon, as much as thou shall need. And we will bring it to thee in floats by sea to Joppa, and thou shall carry it up to Jerusalem.17 And Solomon numbered all the aliens that were in the land of Israel, after the numbering with which David his father had numbered them. And they were found a hundred and fifty-three thousand and six hundred.18 And he set seventy thousand of them to bear burdens, and eighty thousand who were hewers in the mountains, and three thousand and six hundred overseers to set the people to work.
