1 Ao romper o dia, todos os principais sacerdotes e os anciãos do povo entraram em conselho contra Jesus, para o matarem; 2 e, amarrando-o, levaram-no e o entregaram ao governador Pilatos.

3 Então Judas, que o traiu, vendo que Jesus havia sido condenado, tocado de remorso, devolveu as trinta moedas de prata aos principais sacerdotes e aos anciãos, dizendo:

4 — Pequei, traindo sangue inocente.

Eles, porém, responderam:

— Que nos importa? Isso é com você.

5 Então Judas, atirando as moedas de prata para dentro do templo, retirou-se e se enforcou. 6 E os principais sacerdotes, pegando as moedas, disseram:

— Não é lícito colocá-las no cofre das ofertas, porque é preço de sangue.

7 E, tendo deliberado, compraram com elas o campo do oleiro, para cemitério de forasteiros. 8 Por isso, aquele campo é chamado, até o dia de hoje, Campo de Sangue. 9 Então se cumpriu o que foi dito por meio do profeta Jeremias: "Pegaram as trinta moedas de prata, preço em que foi estimado aquele a quem alguns dos filhos de Israel avaliaram, 10 e as deram pelo campo do oleiro, assim como me ordenou o Senhor."

11 Jesus estava em pé diante do governador, e este o interrogou, dizendo:

— Você é o rei dos judeus?

Jesus respondeu:

— O senhor está dizendo isso.

12 E, sendo acusado pelos principais sacerdotes e pelos anciãos, Jesus nada respondeu. 13 Então Pilatos perguntou:

— Não está ouvindo quantas acusações fazem contra você?

14 Mas Jesus não respondeu nem uma palavra, a ponto de o governador ficar muito admirado.

15 Ora, por ocasião da festa, o governador costumava soltar ao povo um preso, conforme eles quisessem. 16 Naquela ocasião, eles tinham um preso muito conhecido, chamado Barrabás. 17 Estando, pois, o povo reunido, Pilatos lhes perguntou:

— Quem vocês querem que eu solte: Barrabás ou Jesus, chamado Cristo?

18 Porque sabia que era por inveja que eles tinham entregado Jesus.

19 E, estando Pilatos sentado no tribunal, a mulher dele mandou dizer-lhe:

— Não se envolva com esse justo, porque hoje, em sonho, sofri muito por causa dele.

20 Mas os principais sacerdotes e os anciãos persuadiram o povo a que pedisse Barrabás e condenasse Jesus à morte. 21 De novo, o governador perguntou:

— Qual dos dois vocês querem que eu solte?

Eles responderam:

— Barrabás!

22 Pilatos lhes perguntou:

— Que farei, então, com Jesus, chamado Cristo?

Todos responderam:

— Que seja crucificado!

23 Pilatos continuou:

— Que mal ele fez?

Porém eles gritavam cada vez mais:

— Que seja crucificado!

24 Vendo Pilatos que nada conseguia e que, ao contrário, o tumulto aumentava, mandou trazer água e lavou as mãos diante do povo, dizendo:

— Estou inocente do sangue deste homem; fique o caso com vocês!

25 E o povo todo respondeu:

— Que o sangue dele caia sobre nós e sobre os nossos filhos!

26 Então Pilatos lhes soltou Barrabás. E, depois de mandar açoitar Jesus, entregou-o para ser crucificado.

27 Logo a seguir, os soldados do governador, levando Jesus para o Pretório, reuniram em torno dele toda a tropa. 28 Tiraram a roupa de Jesus e o vestiram com um manto escarlate. 29 E, tecendo uma coroa de espinhos, a puseram na cabeça dele, e colocaram um caniço na sua mão direita. E, ajoelhando-se diante dele, zombavam, dizendo:

— Salve, rei dos judeus!

30 E, cuspindo nele, pegaram o caniço e batiam na sua cabeça. 31 Depois de terem zombado dele, tiraram-lhe o manto e o vestiram com as suas próprias roupas. Então o levaram para ser crucificado.

32 Ao saírem, encontraram um cireneu, chamado Simão, a quem obrigaram a carregar a cruz de Jesus. 33 E, chegando a um lugar chamado Gólgota, que significa "Lugar da Caveira", 34 deram vinho com fel para Jesus beber; mas ele, provando-o, não quis beber. 35 Depois de o crucificarem, repartiram entre si as roupas dele, tirando a sorte. 36 E, assentados ali, o guardavam. 37 Por cima da cabeça de Jesus puseram por escrito a acusação contra ele: "Este é Jesus, o Rei dos Judeus". 38 E dois ladrões foram crucificados com ele, um à sua direita e outro à sua esquerda. 39 Os que iam passando blasfemavam contra ele, balançando a cabeça e dizendo:

40 — Ei, você que destrói o santuário e em três dias o reedifica! Salve a si mesmo, se você é o Filho de Deus, e desça da cruz!

41 De igual modo, os principais sacerdotes com os escribas e anciãos, zombando, diziam:

42 — Salvou os outros, a si mesmo não pode salvar. É rei de Israel! Que ele desça da cruz, e então creremos nele. 43 Confiou em Deus; pois que Deus venha livrá-lo agora, se, de fato, lhe quer bem; porque ele disse: "Sou Filho de Deus."

44 Também os ladrões que haviam sido crucificados com ele o insultavam.

45 A partir do meio-dia, houve trevas sobre toda a terra até as três horas da tarde. 46 Por volta de três horas da tarde, Jesus clamou em alta voz, dizendo:

— Eli, Eli, lemá sabactani? — Isso quer dizer: "Deus meu, Deus meu, por que me desamparaste?"

47 Alguns dos que estavam ali, ouvindo isto, diziam:

— Ele chama por Elias.

48 E, logo, um deles correu a buscar uma esponja e, tendo-a embebido em vinagre e colocado na ponta de um caniço, deu-lhe de beber. 49 Os outros, porém, diziam:

— Espere! Vejamos se Elias vem salvá-lo.

50 E Jesus, clamando outra vez em alta voz, entregou o espírito.

51 Eis que o véu do santuário se rasgou em duas partes, de alto a baixo; a terra tremeu e as rochas se partiram; 52 os túmulos se abriram, e muitos corpos de santos já falecidos ressuscitaram; 53 e, saindo dos túmulos depois da ressurreição de Jesus, entraram na cidade santa e apareceram a muitos. 54 O centurião e os que com ele guardavam Jesus, vendo o terremoto e tudo o que se passava, ficaram possuídos de grande temor e disseram:

— Verdadeiramente este era o Filho de Deus.

55 Estavam ali muitas mulheres, observando de longe. Eram as que vinham seguindo Jesus desde a Galileia, para o servir. 56 Entre elas estavam Maria Madalena, Maria, mãe de Tiago e de José, e a mulher de Zebedeu.

57 Ao cair da tarde, veio um homem rico de Arimateia, chamado José, que era também discípulo de Jesus. 58 Este foi até Pilatos e lhe pediu o corpo de Jesus. Então Pilatos mandou que o corpo lhe fosse entregue. 59 E José, levando o corpo, envolveu-o num lençol limpo de linho 60 e o depositou no seu túmulo novo, que ele tinha mandado abrir na rocha; e, rolando uma grande pedra para a entrada do túmulo, foi embora. 61 Estavam ali, sentadas em frente do túmulo, Maria Madalena e a outra Maria.

62 No dia seguinte, que é o dia depois da preparação, os principais sacerdotes e os fariseus se reuniram com Pilatos 63 e lhe disseram:

— Senhor, nós lembramos que aquele enganador, enquanto vivia, disse: "Depois de três dias ressuscitarei." 64 Portanto, mande que o túmulo seja guardado com segurança até o terceiro dia, para que não aconteça que, vindo os discípulos dele, o roubem e depois digam ao povo: "Ressuscitou dos mortos." E este último engano será pior do que o primeiro.

65 Pilatos respondeu:

— Uma escolta está à disposição de vocês. Vão e guardem o túmulo como bem entenderem.

66 Indo eles, montaram guarda ao túmulo, selando a pedra e deixando ali a escolta.

1 It was morning. The chief priests and those in authority conspired to put Jesus to death.2 They tied his hands with cords and led him to the ruler, Pilate.3 Judas, his betrayer, heard he was to be put to death. Out of regret, he took the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and those in authority.4 He said: »I have done wrong in giving a righteous man to you.«5 He left the silver in the Temple. Then he went away and hanged himself.6 The chief priests took the silver. They said: »It is not right to put it in the Temple treasury, for it is the price of blood.«7 They decided to use the silver to buy the potter’s field. This would be a place to bury strangers.8 This is the reason the field was named »Field of Blood.«9 Then Jeremiah’s prophecy was fulfilled: »They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price he was valued by the children of Israel.10 »Then they paid for the potter’s field, just as God directed.«11 Jesus stood before the governor. He asked him: »Are you the King of the Jews?« Jesus said to him: »It is as you say.«12 When the chief priests and those in authority made statements against him, he gave no answer.13 Pilate said to him: »Do you give no attention to what their witnesses say against you?«14 Jesus did not answer. Not even a word! The governor was greatly surprised.15 It was a custom for the governor to set one prisoner free at the time of the feast. The people were to help choose that prisoner.16 At that time they held an important prisoner named Barabbas.17 When they assembled, Pilate asked: »What is your choice? Barabbas or Jesus, the one called the Christ?«18 He knew it was because of envy they gave him up.19 While he was seated in judgment his wife sent a message to him. She said, »Do not judge that righteous man. I have had much trouble this day in a dream because of him.«20 The chief priests and elders got the people to request Barabbas, and for Jesus to be put to death.21 The governor responded to them. He asked: »Which of the two do you want me to set free?« They shouted: »Barabbas!«22 Pilate said to them: »What am I to do with Jesus, the one called Christ?« They all said: »Put him to death. Impale him!«23 »What evil has he done?« Pilate asked. But they shouted: »Impale him!«24 Pilate saw that he could do nothing. The people were ready to cause much trouble. He took water and washed his hands in front of the people. He said: »The blood of this man is not on my hands. You are responsible.«25 The people answered: »Let his blood be on us, and on our children.«26 He set Barabbas free. He had Jesus whipped. Then he commanded that he be put to death on the stake.27 Then the palace guard took Jesus into the open square and gathered their squad together.28 They took off his clothes and dressed him in a scarlet robe.29 They made a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They placed a rod in his right hand. Then they bowed down on their knees before him. They mocked him, saying: »Long life to the King of the Jews.«30 They spat on him and hit him on the head with the rod.31 After they mocked him, they took off the robe. He was dressed in his garments and he was led away to be impaled.32 They then found Simon, a man from Cyrene. They forced him to go with them to carry the stake.33 Golgotha, the Place of the Skull, was to be his final destination.34 They gave him vinegar bitter wine to drink mixed with poison a druggall. When he tasted it he would not drink. (Psalm 69:21)35 When they impaled him, they divided his garments among themselves by casting lots.36 Then they sat and watched him.37 A sign was placed above his head with an accusation written: »This is Jesus the King of the Jews.«38 Two robbers were impaled with him. One was on the right hand and one on the left.39 People passing by spoke evil abuse to him. They wagged their heads40 and said, »You who would destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself. If you are the Son of God come down from the stake.«41 In like manner the chief priests, scribes, and elders mocked him.42 They said: »He saved others, but cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him now come down from the stake and we will believe in him.«43 He trusts in God. Let him save him now if he wants him. After all he said: »I am the Son of God.«44 The robbers that were impaled with him also insulted him.45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, »Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?« Which translated means: »My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?«47 After hearing it some said this man calls Elijah.48 Suddenly, one of them ran, took a sponge, filled it with vinegar, put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink.49 The rest said: »Let it be, and see whether Elijah comes to save him.«50 Jesus cried again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.51 The veil curtain of the temple was ripped in two from the top to the bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks split.52 The tombs were split open and many dead bodies were tossed upright on the ground.53 They came out of the tombs after his resurrection.Manuscript text unclear. Many people saw them.54 The centurion and those who were with him watching Jesus saw the earthquake. Filled with much fear of the things that were done, they proclaimed: »Truly, this was the Son of God!«55 The women who followed Jesus from Galilee and ministered to him watched from a distance.56 Included among the women were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.57 A disciple of Jesus named Joseph, a rich man from Arimathea,58 went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate commanded that it be given to him.59 Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth.60 He laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a great stone in front of the door of the tomb, and departed.61 Mary Magdalene was near the tomb. The other Mary was also there.62 It was morning, the day after Preparation. The chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together with Pilate.63 They said: »Sir, we remember while he was yet alive, the deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’«64 »Command the tomb be secured until the third day. Otherwise his disciples could come and steal him away. They could say to the people. ‘He is risen from the dead.’ The last deception will be worse than the first.«65 Pilate said to them: »You have a guard; make it as secure as you can.«66 So they made the tomb secure. They sealed the stone and placed a guard there.
