1 O que era desde o princípio, o que ouvimos, o que vimos com os nossos próprios olhos, o que contemplamos e as nossas mãos apalparam, a respeito do Verbo da vida 2 — e a vida se manifestou, e nós a vimos e dela damos testemunho, e anunciamos a vocês a vida eterna, que estava com o Pai e nos foi manifestada —, 3 o que vimos e ouvimos anunciamos também a vocês, para que também vocês tenham comunhão conosco. Ora, a nossa comunhão é com o Pai e com o seu Filho, Jesus Cristo. 4 E escrevemos estas coisas para que a nossa alegria seja completa.

5 A mensagem que dele ouvimos e que anunciamos a vocês é esta: Deus é luz, e não há nele treva nenhuma. 6 Se dissermos que mantemos comunhão com ele e andarmos nas trevas, mentimos e não praticamos a verdade. 7 Se andarmos na luz, como ele está na luz, mantemos comunhão uns com os outros, e o sangue de Jesus, seu Filho, nos purifica de todo pecado.

8 Se dissermos que não temos pecado nenhum, a nós mesmos enganamos, e a verdade não está em nós. 9 Se confessarmos os nossos pecados, ele é fiel e justo para nos perdoar os pecados e nos purificar de toda injustiça. 10 Se dissermos que não cometemos pecado, fazemos dele um mentiroso, e a sua palavra não está em nós.

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we for ourselves gazed upon, and our hands did handle, concerning the Word of Life,

2 And, the Life, was made manifest, and we have seen, and are bearing witness, and announcing unto you, the Age-abiding Life, which, indeed, was with the Father, and was made manifest unto us;

3 That which we have seen and heard, are we announcing, even unto you, in order that, ye too, may have fellowship with us, and, our own fellowship also, may be with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

4 And, these things, are we writing, in order that, our joy, may be made full.

5 And this is the message which we have heard from him, and are reporting unto you,that, God, is, light, and in him is, no darkness at all.

6 If we sayWe have, fellowship, with him! and, in darkness, are walking, we are dealing falsely, and not doing the truth;

7 Whereas, if, in the light, we are walking, as, he, is in the light, we have, fellowship one with another, and, the blood of Jesus his Son, is cleansing us from all sin.

8 If we saySin, have we none! we are deceiving, ourselves, and, the truth, is not in us.

9 If we are confessing our sins, faithful, is he and, righteousthat he should forgive us our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we sayWe have not sinned! false, are we making, him, and, his word, is not in us.
