1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:

"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;

the whole earth is full of his glory."

4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

5 "Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty."

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for."

8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?"

And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"

9 He said, "Go and tell this people:

" ‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding;

be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’

10 Make the heart of this people calloused;

make their ears dull

and close their eyes.*6:9,10 Hebrew; Septuagint ‘You will be ever hearing, but never understanding; / you will be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’ / 10 This people’s heart has become calloused; / they hardly hear with their ears, / and they have closed their eyes

Otherwise they might see with their eyes,

hear with their ears,

understand with their hearts,

and turn and be healed."

11 Then I said, "For how long, Lord?"

And he answered:

"Until the cities lie ruined

and without inhabitant,

until the houses are left deserted

and the fields ruined and ravaged,

12 until the Lord has sent everyone far away

and the land is utterly forsaken.

13 And though a tenth remains in the land,

it will again be laid waste.

But as the terebinth and oak

leave stumps when they are cut down,

so the holy seed will be the stump in the land."

1 No ano da morte do rei Uzias, eu vi o Senhor assentado em um trono alto e exaltado, e as abas das suas vestes enchiam o templo. 2 Acima dele, estavam serafins; cada um deles tinha seis asas: com duas cobriam o rosto, com duas cobriam os pés e com duas voavam. 3 E proclamavam uns aos outros:

"Santo, santo, santo é o Senhor dos Exércitos;

a terra inteira está cheia da sua glória".

4 Ao som das suas vozes, os batentes das portas tremeram, e o templo ficou cheio de fumaça.

5 Então, gritei:

— Ai de mim! Estou perdido! Pois sou um homem de lábios impuros e vivo no meio de um povo de lábios impuros; os meus olhos viram o Rei, o Senhor dos Exércitos!

6 Logo um dos serafins voou até mim trazendo uma brasa viva, que havia tirado do altar com uma tenaz. 7 Com ela tocou a minha boca e disse:

— Veja, isto tocou os seus lábios; por isso, a sua culpa foi removida, e o seu pecado, perdoado.

8 Então, ouvi a voz do Senhor, conclamando:

— A quem enviarei? Quem irá por nós?

Eu respondi:

— Aqui estou. Envia-me!

9 Ele disse:

— Vá e diga a este povo:

"Escutem com atenção,

mas nunca entendam;

observem bem,

mas jamais percebam".

10 Torne insensível o coração deste povo;

torne surdos os seus ouvidos

e feche os seus olhos.*6.9,10 A Septuaginta traz Ainda que estejam sempre ouvindo, / vocês nunca entenderão; / ainda que estejam sempre vendo, / vocês jamais perceberão. / 10 O coração deste povo se tornou insensível; / de má vontade ouviram com os ouvidos / e fecharam os olhos.

Que eles não vejam com os olhos,

não ouçam com os ouvidos

e não entendam com o coração,

para que não se convertam e sejam curados.

11 Então, eu perguntei:

— Até quando, Senhor?

Ele respondeu:

"Até que as cidades estejam em ruínas

e sem habitantes,

até que as casas fiquem abandonadas

e os campos estejam totalmente devastados,

12 até que o Senhor tenha enviado todos para longe

e a terra esteja totalmente desolada.

13 E, ainda que um décimo fique no país,

estes também serão destruídos.

Mas, como o terebinto e o carvalho

deixam o tronco quando são derrubados,

assim a santa semente será o seu tronco".
