1 Jehovah said to Moses:2 »Get even with the Midianites for what they did to the Israelites. After that you will join your ancestors in death.«3 Moses said to the people: »Your men must get ready to go to war against the Midianites. Jehovah will use them to get even with Midian.4 »Send one thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel.«5 Thus one thousand men from each tribe were supplied from the divisions of Israel, twelve thousand men ready for war.6 Moses sent them off to war. There were one thousand men from each tribe along with Phinehas, son of the priest Eleazar. Phinehas took with him the holy articles and the trumpets for the fanfare.7 They went to war against Midian, as Jehovah commanded Moses, and killed every man.8 Included in those killed were the five kings of Midian-Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba. They also killed Balaam, son of Beor, in battle.9 The Israelites took the Midianite women and children as prisoners of war. They also took all their animals, their livestock, and their valuables as loot.10 They burned the cities where the Midianites lived and all their settlements.11 They took everything as loot including all the people and animals,12 and brought the prisoners of war, the loot, and everything to Moses, the priest Eleazar, and the congregation of Israel at the camp on the plains of Moab near the Jordan River across from Jericho.13 Moses, the priest Eleazar, and all the leaders of the congregation went outside the camp to meet them.14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the commanders of the companies and battalions, who were returning from battle.15 Moses asked them: »Have you spared all the women?16 »Look, these women caused the Israelites, through the counsel of Balaam, to trespass against Jehovah in the matter of Peor. Thus the congregation of Jehovah experienced the plague.17 »So kill all the Midianite boys and every Midianite woman who has gone to bed with a man.18 »But keep alive for yourselves every girl who has never gone to bed with a man.19 »Everyone who killed a person or touched a dead body must stay outside the camp seven days. You and your prisoners of war must use the ritual water on the third and seventh days in order to take away your sin.20 »You must do the same for all the clothes and everything made of leather, goats’ hair, or wood.«21 Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle: »This is what Jehovah’s Law told Moses to do:22 »Only the gold and the silver, the copper, the iron, the tin and the lead,23 everything that can stand the fire, you shall pass through the fire, and it will be clean. It must be purified with water for impurity. Anything that cannot stand the fire you shall pass through the water.24 »You must wash your clothes on the seventh day and be clean. After that you may enter the camp.«25 Jehovah spoke to Moses:26 »You and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the families of the congregation take a count of the booty that was captured, both of man and of animal.27 »Divide the booty between the warriors who went out to battle and the entire congregation.28 »Levy a tax for Jehovah from the men of war who went out to battle, one in five hundred of the persons and of the cattle and of the donkeys and of the sheep.29 »Take it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest, as an offering to Jehovah.30 »From the sons of Israel’s half, you shall take one drawn out of every fifty of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys and of the sheep, from all the animals, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of Jehovah.«31 Moses and Eleazar the priest did just as Jehovah commanded Moses.32 The booty that remained from the spoil the men of war had plundered was six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep,33 and seventy-two thousand cattle,34 and sixty-one thousand donkeys,35 and of human beings, of the women who had not known man intimately, all the persons were thirty-two thousand.36 The half, the portion of those who went out to war, was as follows: the number of sheep was three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred.37 Jehovah’s levy of the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five.38 There were thirty-six thousand cattle, from which Jehovah’s levy was seventy-two.39 There were thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, from which Jehovah’s levy was sixty-one.40 There were sixteen thousand human beings, from whom Jehovah’s levy was thirty-two persons.41 Moses gave the levy that was Jehovah’s offering to Eleazar the priest, just as Jehovah had commanded Moses.42 And from the Israelites half, which Moses separated from the men who had gone to war.43 The congregation’s half was three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,44 and thirty-six thousand cattle,45 and thirty thousand five hundred donkeys,46 and the human beings were sixteen thousand.47 Moses took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of animals from the Israelite’s half. He gave them to the Levites, who kept charge of the tabernacle of Jehovah, just as Jehovah commanded Moses.48 Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, approached Moses.49 They said to Moses: »Your servants have taken a census of men of war who are in our charge, and no man of us is missing.50 »So we brought as an offering to Jehovah what each man found, articles of gold, armlets and ankle bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces, to make atonement for ourselves before Jehovah.«51 Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, all kinds of molded articles.52 All the gold of the offering they gave to Jehovah, from the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.53 Each of the men of war had taken booty.54 So Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it to the tent of meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before Jehovah.

e mataram a todos os homens.8 Com eles mataram também os reis de Midiã, a saber, Evi, Requem, Zur, Hur e Reba, cinco reis de Midiã; igualmente mataram à espada a Balaão, filho de Beor.9 Também os filhos de Israel levaram presas as mulheres dos midianitas e os seus pequeninos; e despojaram-nos de todo o seu gado, e de todos os seus rebanhos, enfim, de todos os seus bens;10 queimaram a fogo todas as cidades em que eles habitavam e todos os seus acampamentos;11 tomaram todo o despojo e toda a presa, tanto de homens como de animais;12 e trouxeram os cativos e a presa e o despojo a Moisés, a Eleazar, o sacerdote, e à congregação dos filhos de Israel, ao arraial, nas planícies de Moabe, que estão junto do Jordão, na altura de Jericó.13 Saíram, pois, Moisés e Eleazar, o sacerdote, e todos os príncipes da congregação, ao encontro deles fora do arraial.14 E indignou-se Moisés contra os oficiais do exército, chefes dos milhares e chefes das centenas, que vinham do serviço da guerra,15 e lhes disse: Deixastes viver todas as mulheres?16 Eis que estas foram as que, por conselho de Balaão, fizeram que os filhos de Israel pecassem contra o Senhor no caso de Peor, pelo que houve a praga entre a congregação do Senhor.17 Agora, pois, matai todos os meninos entre as crianças, e todas as mulheres que conheceram homem, deitando-se com ele.18 Mas todas as meninas, que não conheceram homem, deitando-se com ele, deixai-as viver para vós.19 Acampai-vos por sete dias fora do arraial; todos vós, tanto o que tiver matado alguma pessoa, como o que tiver tocado algum morto, ao terceiro dia e ao sétimo dia purificai-vos, a vós e aos vossos cativos.20 Também purificai-vos no tocante a todo vestido, e todo artigo de peles, e toda obra de pelos de cabras, e todo utensílio de madeira.21 Então Eleazar, o sacerdote, disse aos homens de guerra que tinham saído à peleja: Este é o estatuto da lei que o Senhor ordenou a Moisés:22 o ouro, a prata, o bronze, o ferro, o estanho, o chumbo,23 tudo o que pode resistir ao fogo, fálo-eis passar pelo fogo, e ficará limpo; todavia será purificado com a água de purificação; e tudo o que não pode resistir ao fogo, fá-lo-eis passar pela água.24 Também lavareis as vossas vestes ao sétimo dia, e ficareis limpos, e depois entrareis no arraial.25 Disse mais o Senhor a Moisés:26 Faze a soma da presa que foi tomada, tanto de homens como de animais, tu e Eleazar, o sacerdote, e os cabeças das casas paternas da congregação;27 e divide-a em duas partes iguais, entre os que, hábeis na guerra, saíram à peleja, e toda a congregação.28 E tomarás para o Senhor um tributo dos homens de guerra, que saíram à peleja; um em quinhentos, assim dos homens, como dos bois, dos jumentos e dos rebanhos;29 da sua metade o tomareis, e o dareis a Eleazar, o sacerdote, para a oferta alçada do Senhor.30 Mas da metade que pertence aos filhos de Israel tomarás um de cada cinqüenta, tanto dos homens, como dos bois, dos jumentos, dos rebanhos, enfim, de todos os animais, e os darás aos levitas, que estão encarregados do serviço do tabernáculo do Senhor.31 Fizeram, pois, Moisés e Eleazar, o sacerdote, como o Senhor ordenara a Moisés.32 Ora, a presa, o restante do despojo que os homens de guerra tomaram, foi de seiscentas e setenta e cinco mil ovelhas,33 setenta e dois mil bois,34 e sessenta e um mil jumentos;35 e trinta e duas mil pessoas, ao todo, do sexo feminino, que ainda se conservavam virgens.36 Assim a metade, que era a porção dos que saíram à guerra, foi em número de trezentas e trinta e sete mil e quinhentas ovelhas;37 e das ovelhas foi o tributo para o Senhor seiscentas e setenta e cinco.38 E foram os bois trinta e seis mil, dos quais foi o tributo para o Senhor setenta e dois.39 E foram os jumentos trinta mil e quinhentos, dos quais foi o tributo para o Senhor sessenta e um.40 E houve de pessoas dezesseis mil, das quais foi o tributo para o Senhor trinta e duas pessoas.41 Moisés, pois, deu a Eleazar, o sacerdote, o tributo, que era a oferta alçada do Senhor, como o Senhor ordenara a Moisés.42 E da metade que era dos filhos de Israel, que Moisés separara da que era dos homens que pelejaram43 {ora, a metade que coube à congregação foi, das ovelhas, trezentas e trinta e sete mil e quinhentas;44 dos bois trinta e seis mil;45 dos jumentos trinta mil e quinhentos;46 e das pessoas dezesseis mil},47 isto é, da metade que era dos filhos de Israel, Moisés tomou um de cada cinqüenta, tanto dos homens como dos animais, e os deu aos levitas, que estavam encarregados do serviço do tabernáculo do Senhor; como o Senhor ordenara a Moisés.48 Então chegaram-se a Moisés os oficiais que estavam sobre os milhares do exército, os chefes de mil e os chefes de cem,49 e disseram-lhe: Teus servos tomaram a soma dos homens de guerra que estiveram sob o nosso comando; e não falta nenhum de nós.50 Pelo que trouxemos a oferta do Senhor, cada um o que achou, artigos de ouro, cadeias, braceletes, anéis, arrecadas e colares, para fazer expiação pelas nossas almas perante o Senhor.51 Assim Moisés e Eleazar, o sacerdote, tomaram deles o ouro, todo feito em jóias.52 E todo o ouro da oferta alçada que os chefes de mil e os chefes de cem fizeram ao Senhor, foi dezesseis mil setecentos e cinqüenta siclos53 {pois os homens de guerra haviam tomado despojo, cada um para si}.54 Assim receberam Moisés e Eleazar, o sacerdote, o ouro dos chefes de mil e dos chefes de cem, e o puseram na tenda da revelação por memorial para os filhos de Israel perante o Senhor.
