1 Moses said to the heads of the tribes of Israel: This is what Jehovah has commanded about vows:2 »If a man makes a vow to Jehovah that he will do something or swears an oath that he will not do something, he must not break his word. He must do everything he said he would do.3 »A young girl, who still lives in her father’s house, might make a vow to Jehovah that she will do something or swear an oath that she will not do something.4 »She must do everything that she vowed or promised unless her father raises an objection when he hears about it.5 »If her father forbids her to fulfill the vow when he hears about it, she is not required to keep it. Jehovah will forgive her, because her father refused to let her keep it.6 »If an unmarried woman makes a vow, whether deliberately or carelessly, or promises to abstain from something, and then marries,7 she must do everything that she vowed or promised unless her husband raises an objection when he hears about it.8 »If her husband forbids her to fulfill the vow when he hears about it, she is not required to keep it. Jehovah will forgive her.9 »A widow or a divorced woman must keep every vow she makes and every promise to abstain from something.10 »If a married woman makes a vow or promises to abstain from something,11 her husband may hear about it but may say nothing and not object. Then her vow or oath must be kept.12 »But if her husband cancels it when he hears about it, nothing she said in her vow or oath has to be kept. Her husband has canceled it. Jehovah will free her from this vow or oath.13 »A husband decides whether or not his wife has to keep any vow to do something or any oath to do without something.14 »If he says nothing to her about it day after day, this means he decided that she must keep her vow or oath. She must keep it because he said nothing to her when he heard about it.15 »If he cancels it later, he will suffer the consequences.«16 These are the laws Jehovah gave Moses for husbands and wives, and for fathers with young daughters still living at home.

1 Depois disse Moisés aos cabeças das tribos dos filhos de Israel: Isto é o que o Senhor ordenou:2 Quando um homem fizer voto ao Senhor, ou jurar, ligando-se com obrigação, não violará a sua palavra; segundo tudo o que sair da sua boca fará.3 Também quando uma mulher, na sua mocidade, estando ainda na casa de seu pai, fizer voto ao Senhor, e com obrigação se ligar,4 e seu pai souber do seu voto e da obrigação com que se ligou, e se calar para com ela, então todos os seus votos serão válidos, e toda a obrigação com que se ligou será válida.5 Mas se seu pai lho vedar no dia em que o souber, todos os seus votos e as suas obrigações, com que se tiver ligado, deixarão de ser válidos; e o Senhor lhe perdoará, porquanto seu pai lhos vedou.6 Se ela se casar enquanto ainda estiverem sobre ela os seus votos ou o dito irrefletido dos seus lábios, com que se tiver obrigado,7 e seu marido o souber e se calar para com ela no dia em que o souber, os votos dela serão válidos; e as obrigações com que se ligou serão válidas.8 Mas se seu marido lho vedar no dia em que o souber, anulará o voto que estiver sobre ela, como também o dito irrefletido dos seus lábios, com que se tiver obrigado; e o senhor lhe perdoará.9 No tocante ao voto de uma viúva ou de uma repudiada, tudo com que se obrigar ser-lhe-á válido.10 Se ela, porém, fez voto na casa de seu marido, ou se obrigou com juramento,11 e seu marido o soube e se calou para com ela, não lho vedando, todos os seus votos serão válidos; e toda a obrigação com que se ligou será válida.12 Se, porém, seu marido de todo lhos anulou no dia em que os soube, deixará de ser válido tudo quanto saiu dos lábios dela, quer no tocante aos seus votos, quer no tocante àquilo a que se obrigou; seu marido lhos anulou; e o senhor lhe perdoará.13 Todo voto, e todo juramento de obrigação, que ela tiver feito para afligir a alma, seu marido pode confirmá-lo, ou pode anulá-lo.14 Se, porém, seu marido, de dia em dia, se calar inteiramente para com ela, confirma todos os votos e todas as obrigações que estiverem sobre ela; ele lhos confirmou, porquanto se calou para com ela no dia em que os soube.15 Mas se de todo lhos anular depois de os ter sabido, ele levará sobre si a iniqüidade dela.16 Esses são os estatutos que o Senhor ordenou a Moisés, entre o marido e sua mulher, entre o pai e sua filha, na sua mocidade, em casa de seu pai.
