1 Sansão desceu até a cidade de Timna e ali viu uma moça filisteia. 2 Voltou para casa e disse ao seu pai e à sua mãe:

— Eu vi em Timna uma jovem filisteia. Peçam essa moça para mim porque eu quero casar com ela.

3 Mas o seu pai e a sua mãe responderam:

— Por que é que você foi procurar mulher no meio dos filisteus, aquela gente que não pratica a circuncisão? Será que você não podia achar mulher no meio dos nossos parentes ou entre o nosso povo?

Mas Sansão disse ao seu pai:

— É aquela a moça que eu quero. É dela que eu gosto.

4 O seu pai e a sua mãe não sabiam que era o Senhor Deus que estava orientando Sansão para fazer aquilo. Deus estava procurando uma oportunidade para atacar os filisteus, que naquele tempo dominavam o povo de Israel.

5 Sansão desceu com os seus pais até a cidade de Timna. Quando estavam passando pelas plantações de uvas de Timna, um leão novo veio rugindo para cima dele. 6 Mas o Espírito do Senhor fez com que Sansão ficasse forte. Com as suas próprias mãos, Sansão despedaçou o leão, como se fosse um cabrito. Porém não contou nem ao seu pai nem à sua mãe o que havia feito.

7 Então ele foi conversar com a moça e gostou dela. 8 Poucos dias depois Sansão voltou lá para casar com ela. Saiu da estrada para dar uma olhada no leão que havia matado. E ficou espantado ao ver um enxame de abelhas e mel dentro do corpo do animal morto. 9 Então tirou mel com as mãos e saiu comendo. Foi até onde estavam o seu pai e a sua mãe e lhes deu um pouco. E eles comeram. Porém Sansão não lhes contou que havia tirado o mel do corpo do leão.

10 O pai de Sansão foi à casa da moça, e Sansão deu um banquete ali, como era o costume dos moços. 11 Quando os filisteus o viram, trouxeram trinta rapazes para festejar com ele. 12,13 E Sansão lhes disse:

— Eu tenho uma adivinhação para vocês. Aposto trinta túnicas de linho puro e trinta roupas finas que, antes de se passarem os sete dias da festa de casamento, vocês não me darão a resposta.

Eles responderam:

— Diga qual é a adivinhação.

14 Sansão disse:

"Do que come saiu comida,

e do forte saiu doçura."

Três dias depois eles ainda não haviam encontrado a resposta para a adivinhação.

15 No quarto dia disseram à mulher de Sansão:

— Dê um jeito de fazer o seu marido dar a resposta da adivinhação. Se você não fizer isso, nós vamos pôr fogo na casa do seu pai e vamos queimar você junto. Vocês só nos convidaram para poder nos roubar, não foi?

16 Aí a mulher de Sansão lhe disse, chorando:

— Você não me ama! Você me odeia! Você deu uma adivinhação aos meus amigos e não me contou a resposta!

— Eu não contei nem para o meu pai nem para a minha mãe! — respondeu ele. — Por que acha que eu iria contar para você?

17 Então ela chorou durante os outros dias da festa. No sétimo dia, como a mulher não parava de insistir, ele disse a resposta. E ela contou aos seus amigos. 18 Assim, no sétimo dia, antes de anoitecer, os homens da cidade disseram a Sansão:

"Que coisa é mais doce do que o mel?

E o que é mais forte do que o leão?"

Sansão respondeu:

— Se vocês não tivessem conversado com a minha mulher, não saberiam agora a resposta.

19 Então o Espírito do Senhor fez com que Sansão ficasse forte, e ele desceu até Asquelom e ali matou trinta homens. Tirou as roupas finas que eles vestiam e as deu aos rapazes que tinham respondido à adivinhação. Depois voltou para a casa do seu pai, furioso com o que havia acontecido.

20 E a mulher de Sansão foi dada ao homem que tinha sido o seu padrinho de casamento.

1 And Samson went down to Timnath,and saw a woman in Timnath, of the daughters of the Philistines.

2 So he came up, and told his father and his mother, and saidA woman, have I seen in Timnath, of the daughters of the Philistines,now, therefore, take her for me, to wife.

3 And his father and his mother said to himIs there not, among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, a woman, that thou art going away to take a woman from among the uncircumcised Philistines? But Samson said unto his fatherTake, her, for me, for, she, is pleasant in mine eyes.

4 Now, his father and his mother, knew not, that, from Yahweh, it was, that, an occasion, he was seeking of the Philistines,at that time, the Philistines having dominion over Israel.

5 So Samson went down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath,and they came as far as the vineyards of Timnath, when lo! a young lion, roaring to meet him.

6 And the Spirit of Yahweh, came suddenly over him, and he tore it in pieces as if he had torn in pieces a kid, there being, nothing at all, in his hand,but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.

7 So he went down, and spake unto the woman,and she was pleasant in the eyes of Samson.

8 And he returned, after a time, to take her, and went aside to see the carcass of the lion,and lo! a swarm of bees, in the body of the lion, and, honey,

9 which he took into his hands, and went oneating as he went, and came unto his father and unto his mother, and gave unto them, and they did eat,but he told them not that, out of the carcass of the lion, he had taken the honey.

10 And his father went down unto the woman,and Samson made there a banquet, for, so, used the young men, to do.

11 And it came to pass, because they feared him, that they took thirty companions, who remained with him.

12 And Samson said unto them, I pray you let me put you forth a riddle,if ye, tell, it me, within the seven days of the banquet, and find it out, then will I give you thirty linen wraps and thirty changes of raiment;

13 but, if ye cannot tell me, then shall, ye, give me thirty linen wraps, and thirty changes of raiment. And they said unto him, Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it.

14 And he said to themOut of the eater, came forth food, And, out of the strong, came forth sweetness. But they could not tell the riddle, in three days.

15 And it came to pass, on the fourth day, that they said to Samsons wife, Entice thy husband, that he may tell us the riddle, lest we burn thee and the house of thy father, with fire. Was it not, to impoverish us, that ye invited uswas it not?

16 And the wife of Samson wept upon him, and saidThou dost, altogether hate me, and dost not love me, a riddle, hast thou put forth to the sons of my people, and, unto me, thou hast not told it! And he said to her, Lo! to my own father and mother, have I not told it, and, to thee, shall I tell it?

17 So she wept upon him the seven days,while their banquet lasted,and it came to pass, on the seventh day, that he told her, because she urged him, and she told the riddle unto the sons of her people.

18 And the men of the city said to him, on the seventh dayere yet the sun went in, What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion? And he said to them: If ye had not ploughed with my heifer, Ye had not found out my riddle!

19 And the Spirit of Yahweh, came suddenly over him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and smote of them thirty men, and took their garments, and gave the changes to them who had told the riddle,and his anger was kindled, and he went up to his fathers house.

20 And the wife of Samson was given unto his companion who had served him as his friend.
