1 Naquele tempo João Batista foi para o deserto da Judeia e começou a pregar, 2 dizendo:
— Arrependam-se dos seus pecados porque o Reino do Céu está perto!
3 A respeito de João, o profeta Isaías tinha escrito o seguinte:
"Alguém está gritando no deserto:
Preparem o caminho para o Senhor passar!
Abram estradas retas para ele!"
4 João usava uma roupa feita de pelos de camelo e um cinto de couro e comia gafanhotos e mel do mato. 5 Os moradores de Jerusalém, da região da Judeia e de todos os lugares em volta do rio Jordão iam ouvi-lo. 6 Eles confessavam os seus pecados, e João os batizava no rio Jordão.
1 Then Jesus was led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tried by the devil.
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he afterward was hungry.
3 And the tempter came and said to him, If you are the Son of God, say that these stones may become bread.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man will not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil takes him into the holy city; and he set him on the pinnacle of the temple,
6 and says to him, If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down: for it is written, He will give his angels charge concerning you: and, On their hands they will bear you up, Lest perhaps you dash your foot against a stone.
