Água jorra da rocha

1 Toda a comunidade de Israel partiu do deserto de Sim, andando de lugar em lugar, conforme a ordem do Senhor. Acamparam em Refidim, mas lá não havia água para o povo beber. 2 Por essa razão, queixaram-se a Moisés e disseram:

— Dê-nos água para beber.

Ele respondeu:

— Por que se queixam a mim? Por que põem o Senhor à prova?

3 O povo, porém, estava com sede naquele momento e queixou-se a Moisés:

— Por que você nos tirou do Egito? Foi para matar de sede a nós, aos nossos filhos e aos nossos rebanhos?

4 Então, Moisés clamou ao Senhor:

— Que farei com este povo? Estão a ponto de apedrejar-me!

5 O Senhor respondeu-lhe:

— Passe à frente do povo. Leve com você algumas das autoridades de Israel, tenha na mão a vara com a qual você feriu o Nilo e vá adiante. 6 Eu estarei à sua espera junto à rocha do monte Horebe. Bata na rocha, e dela sairá água para o povo beber.

Assim fez Moisés, à vista das autoridades de Israel. 7 Chamou àquele lugar Massá*17.7 Massá significa provação. e Meribá,*17.7 Meribá significa contenda. porque ali os israelitas contenderam com o Senhor e o puseram à prova, dizendo:

— O Senhor está entre nós, ou não?

A vitória sobre os amalequitas

8 Sucedeu que os amalequitas vieram e atacaram os israelitas em Refidim. 9 Então, Moisés disse a Josué:

— Escolha alguns dos nossos homens e vá lutar contra os amalequitas. Amanhã tomarei posição no alto da colina com a vara de Deus nas minhas mãos.

10 Josué foi, então, lutar contra os amalequitas, conforme Moisés tinha ordenado. Moisés, Arão e Hur, porém, subiram ao alto da colina. 11 Enquanto Moisés mantinha as mãos erguidas, os israelitas venciam; quando, porém, as abaixava, os amalequitas venciam. 12 Quando as mãos de Moisés já estavam cansadas, pegaram uma pedra e a colocaram debaixo dele, para que nela se sentasse. Arão e Hur mantiveram erguidas as mãos de Moisés, um de cada lado, de modo que elas permaneceram firmes até o pôr do sol. 13 Assim, Josué derrotou os amalequitas à espada.

14 Depois, o Senhor disse a Moisés:

— Escreva isto em um rolo, como memorial, e declare a Josué que exterminarei completamente a memória dos amalequitas debaixo do céu.

15 Moisés construiu um altar e chamou-o "O Senhor é a minha bandeira".*17.15 Ou estandarte, estaca; um estandarte militar geralmente fixado sobre um monte em sinal de guerra ou conquista.16 Ele jurou:

— Por causa da mão levantada contra o*17.16 Ou ao. trono do Senhor,*17.16 O significado dessa frase em hebraico é incerto. o Senhor fará guerra contra os amalequitas de geração a geração.

1 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, by their journeys, according to the commandment of Jehovah, and encamped in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink. 2 Wherefore the people strove with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why strive ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt Jehovah? 3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore hast thou brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst? 4 And Moses cried unto Jehovah, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they are almost ready to stone me. 5 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Pass on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thy hand, and go. 6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the striving of the children of Israel, and because they tempted Jehovah, saying, Is Jehovah among us, or not?

8 Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim. 9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to-morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand. 10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. 14 and Jehovah said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. 15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi; 16 and he said, Jehovah hath sworn: Jehovah will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.
