Gênesis 15

A aliança de Deus com Abrão

1 Depois dessas coisas, a palavra do Senhor veio a Abrão em uma visão:

"Não tenha medo, Abrão!

Eu sou o seu escudo;

a sua recompensa será muito grande".*15.1 Ou Eu sou o seu escudo, / sua grande recompensa.

2 Abrão, porém, perguntou:

— Ó Soberano Senhor, que me darás se continuo sem filhos e o herdeiro da minha casa é Eliézer de Damasco?*15.2 O significado dessa frase em hebraico é incerto.

3 Ele acrescentou:

— Veja, tu não me deste descendência! Um filho entre os da minha casa será o meu herdeiro!

4 Então, a palavra do Senhor veio a ele:

— O seu herdeiro não será esse. Aquele que for gerado por você será o seu herdeiro.

5 Levando-o para fora da tenda, disse-lhe:

— Olhe para o céu e conte as estrelas, se é que pode contá-las.

Então, prosseguiu:

— Assim será a sua descendência.

6 Abrão creu no Senhor, e o Senhor lhe atribuiu isso como justiça.

7 Disse-lhe ainda:

— Eu sou o Senhor, que o tirei de Ur dos caldeus para dar a você a posse desta terra.

8 Abrão perguntou-lhe:

— Ó Soberano Senhor, como posso saber que tomarei posse dela?

9 O Senhor respondeu-lhe:

— Traga-me uma novilha, uma cabra e um carneiro, todos com três anos de vida, e também uma rolinha e um pombinho.

10 Abrão levou todos esses animais, cortou-os ao meio e colocou cada uma das metades em frente à outra; as aves, porém, ele não cortou. 11 Aves de rapina começaram a descer sobre os cadáveres, mas Abrão as enxotava.

12 Ao pôr do sol, um sono profundo caiu sobre Abrão, e eis que vieram sobre ele trevas densas e apavorantes. 13 Então, o Senhor lhe disse:

— Saiba, com certeza, que a sua descendência será estrangeira em uma terra que não lhes pertencerá; também serão escravizados e oprimidos por quatrocentos anos. 14 Eu, porém, castigarei a nação à qual servirão como escravos e, depois de tudo, sairão com muitos bens. 15 Quanto a você, irá em paz aos seus antepassados e será sepultado em boa velhice. 16 Na quarta geração, os seus descendentes voltarão para cá, porque a maldade dos amorreus ainda não atingiu o seu auge.

17 Quando o sol se pôs e veio a escuridão, eis que um fogareiro esfumaçante, com uma tocha flamejante, passou por entre os pedaços dos animais. 18 Naquele dia, o Senhor fez a seguinte aliança com Abrão:

— À sua descendência dei esta terra, desde o ribeiro do Egito até o grande rio, o Eufrates: 19 a terra dos queneus, dos quenezeus, dos cadmoneus, 20 dos hititas, dos ferezeus, dos refains, 21 dos amorreus, dos cananeus, dos girgaseus e dos jebuseus.

The Lord’s Covenant With Abram

1 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:

"Do not be afraid, Abram.

I am your shield,*15:1 Or sovereign

your very great reward.*15:1 Or shield; / your reward will be very great"

2 But Abram said, "Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit*15:2 The meaning of the Hebrew for this phrase is uncertain. my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?" 3 And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir."

4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: "This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir." 5 He took him outside and said, "Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring*15:5 Or seed be."

6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

7 He also said to him, "I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it."

8 But Abram said, "Sovereign Lord, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?"

9 So the Lord said to him, "Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon."

10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half. 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.

12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13 Then the Lord said to him, "Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. 15 You, however, will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age. 16 In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure."

17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi*15:18 Or river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates— 19 the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20 Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites."
