Jacó foge de Labão

1 Jacó ouviu falar que os filhos de Labão estavam dizendo: "Jacó tomou tudo o que pertencia ao nosso pai e juntou esta riqueza toda à custa do nosso pai". 2 Jacó percebeu que a atitude de Labão para com ele já não era a mesma de antes.

3 O Senhor disse a Jacó:

— Volte para a terra dos seus pais e dos seus parentes, e eu estarei com você.

4 Então, Jacó mandou chamar Raquel e Lia para virem ao campo onde estavam os seus rebanhos 5 e lhes disse:

— Vejo que a atitude do pai de vocês para comigo não é mais a mesma, mas o Deus do meu pai tem estado comigo. 6 Vocês sabem que trabalhei para o pai de vocês com todo o empenho, 7 mas ele tem me enganado, mudando o meu salário dez vezes. Contudo, Deus não permitiu que ele me prejudicasse. 8 Se ele dizia: "As crias salpicadas serão o seu salário", todos os rebanhos geravam filhotes salpicados, mas, se ele dizia: "As listradas serão o seu salário", todos os rebanhos geravam filhotes listrados. 9 Foi Deus quem tirou os rebanhos do pai de vocês e os deu a mim.

10 — Na época do acasalamento, tive um sonho em que olhei e vi que os bodes que fecundavam o rebanho eram listrados, salpicados e malhados. 11 O anjo de Deus me disse no sonho: "Jacó!". Eu respondi: "Aqui estou". 12 Então, ele disse: "Levante os olhos e veja que todos os bodes que fecundam o rebanho são listrados, salpicados e malhados, porque tenho visto tudo o que Labão lhe fez. 13 Eu sou o Deus de Betel, onde você ungiu uma coluna e me fez um voto. Saia agora desta terra e volte para a terra dos seus parentes".

14 Raquel e Lia responderam a Jacó:

— Será que ainda temos alguma herança na casa do nosso pai? 15 Não nos considera ele como estrangeiras? Não apenas nos vendeu, como também gastou tudo o que nos era devido! 16 Certamente, toda a riqueza que Deus tirou do nosso pai é nossa e dos nossos filhos. Portanto, faça tudo quanto Deus lhe falou.

17 Então, Jacó se preparou, colocou os seus filhos e as suas mulheres sobre os camelos 18 e conduziu todo o seu rebanho, ou seja, todos os bens em rebanho que havia adquirido em Padã-Arã,*31.18 Isto é, a região noroeste da Mesopotâmia. para ir até o seu pai, Isaque, na terra de Canaã.

19 Enquanto Labão tinha saído para tosquiar as suas ovelhas, Raquel roubou os ídolos domésticos que pertenciam ao seu pai. 20 Foi assim que Jacó enganou Labão, o arameu, fugindo sem lhe dizer nada. 21 Ele fugiu com tudo o que tinha e, atravessando o Eufrates,*31.21 Hebraico: o Rio. foi em direção aos montes de Gileade.

Labão persegue Jacó

22 Três dias depois, Labão foi informado de que Jacó tinha fugido. 23 Tomando consigo os seus parentes, perseguiu Jacó por sete dias e o alcançou nos montes de Gileade. 24 Então, à noite, Deus veio a Labão, o arameu, e o advertiu em sonho:

— Cuidado com o que você dirá a Jacó, quer bom, quer mau.

25 Labão alcançou Jacó, que estava acampado nos montes de Gileade. Então, Labão e os seus parentes acamparam ali também. 26 Ele perguntou a Jacó:

— Que foi que você fez? Não só me enganou, mas também raptou as minhas filhas como se fossem prisioneiras de guerra. 27 Por que você me enganou, fugindo em segredo, sem me dizer nada? Eu o teria despedido com alegria e com cantos, ao som dos tamborins e das harpas. 28 Você nem sequer me deixou beijar os meus netos e as minhas filhas. Você agiu como um tolo. 29 Eu tenho poder para fazer o mal contra você, mas, na noite passada, o Deus do pai de vocês me advertiu: "Cuidado com o que você dirá a Jacó, quer bom, quer mau". 30 Agora, se você partiu porque tinha saudade da casa do seu pai, por que roubou os meus deuses?

31 Jacó respondeu a Labão:

— Tive medo, pois pensei que o senhor tiraria as suas filhas de mim à força. 32 Quanto aos seus deuses, quem for encontrado com eles não ficará vivo. Na presença dos nossos parentes, veja o senhor mesmo se está aqui comigo qualquer coisa que lhe pertença, e, se estiver, leve-a de volta. Ora, Jacó não sabia que Raquel os havia roubado.

33 Então, Labão entrou na tenda de Jacó, e nas tendas de Lia e das duas servas, mas não encontrou nada. Depois de sair da tenda de Lia, entrou na tenda de Raquel. 34 Raquel tinha colocado os ídolos dentro da sela do camelo e estava sentada sobre eles. Labão vasculhou toda a tenda, mas não encontrou nada.

35 Raquel disse ao pai:

— Não se irrite, meu senhor, por não poder me levantar na sua presença, pois estou com o fluxo das mulheres. Ele procurou os ídolos, mas não os encontrou.

36 Jacó ficou irado e queixou-se a Labão:

— Qual foi o meu crime? Qual é o meu pecado para que o senhor me persiga furiosamente? 37 Já vasculhou tudo o que me pertence. Caso tenha encontrado algo que lhe pertença, coloque aqui na frente dos meus parentes e dos seus, e que eles julguem entre nós dois.

38 — Eu estive com o senhor nestes vinte anos, e nenhuma das suas ovelhas e cabras abortou, nem jamais comi um só carneiro do seu rebanho. 39 Eu nunca lhe levava os animais despedaçados por feras; eu mesmo assumia o prejuízo. O senhor reivindicava de mim o pagamento por todo animal roubado de dia ou de noite. 40 O calor me consumia de dia; o frio, de noite; tampouco eu conseguia dormir. 41 Foi assim nos vinte anos em que fiquei na sua casa. Trabalhei para o senhor catorze anos por suas duas filhas e seis anos pelos seus rebanhos; o senhor alterou o meu salário dez vezes. 42 Se o Deus do meu pai, o Deus de Abraão, o Temor de Isaque, não estivesse comigo, certamente o senhor me despediria de mãos vazias. Deus, porém, viu o meu sofrimento e o trabalho das minhas mãos e, na noite passada, ele manifestou a sua decisão.

43 Labão respondeu a Jacó:

— As filhas são minhas filhas, os filhos são meus filhos, os rebanhos são meus rebanhos. Tudo o que você vê é meu. Que posso fazer por estas minhas filhas ou pelos filhos que delas nasceram? 44 Portanto, venha, façamos agora, você e eu, uma aliança que sirva de testemunho entre nós dois.

45 Então, Jacó tomou uma pedra, colocou-a em pé como coluna 46 e disse aos seus parentes:

— Juntem algumas pedras.

Eles apanharam pedras e as amontoaram. Depois, comeram ali, junto ao monte de pedras. 47 Labão o chamou Jegar-Saaduta, e Jacó o chamou Galeede.*31.47 Tanto Jegar-Saaduta (aramaico) como Galeede (hebraico) significam monte de pedras do testemunho.

48 Labão disse:

— Este monte de pedras é, no dia de hoje, uma testemunha entre mim e você.

Por isso, foi chamado Galeede. 49 Foi também chamado Mispá,*31.49 Mispá significa torre de vigia. porque Labão declarou:

— Que o Senhor nos vigie, a mim e a você, quando estivermos separados um do outro. 50 Se você maltratar as minhas filhas, tomando outras mulheres além delas, ainda que ninguém saiba, lembre-se de que Deus é testemunha entre mim e você.

51 Labão ainda disse a Jacó:

— Aqui estão este monte de pedras e esta coluna que coloquei entre mim e você; 52 são testemunhas de que nem eu nem você passaremos deste monte de pedras e desta coluna para fazermos mal um ao outro. 53 Que o Deus de Abraão, o deus de Naor e os deuses do pai deles julguem entre nós.

Então, Jacó fez um juramento em nome do Temor de Isaque, o seu pai. 54 Ofereceu um sacrifício no monte e chamou os parentes que lá estavam para uma refeição. Depois de comerem, passaram a noite ali.

55 Bem cedo, na manhã seguinte, Labão beijou os seus netos e as suas filhas e os abençoou; depois, voltou para a sua casa.*31.55 No texto hebraico, esse versículo (31.55) corresponde a 32.1, e 32.1-32 corresponde a 32.2-33.

Jacob Flees From Laban

1 Jacob heard that Laban’s sons were saying, "Jacob has taken everything our father owned and has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father." 2 And Jacob noticed that Laban’s attitude toward him was not what it had been.

3 Then the Lord said to Jacob, "Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you."

4 So Jacob sent word to Rachel and Leah to come out to the fields where his flocks were. 5 He said to them, "I see that your father’s attitude toward me is not what it was before, but the God of my father has been with me. 6 You know that I’ve worked for your father with all my strength, 7 yet your father has cheated me by changing my wages ten times. However, God has not allowed him to harm me. 8 If he said, ‘The speckled ones will be your wages,’ then all the flocks gave birth to speckled young; and if he said, ‘The streaked ones will be your wages,’ then all the flocks bore streaked young. 9 So God has taken away your father’s livestock and has given them to me.

10 "In breeding season I once had a dream in which I looked up and saw that the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled or spotted. 11 The angel of God said to me in the dream, ‘Jacob.’ I answered, ‘Here I am.’ 12 And he said, ‘Look up and see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled or spotted, for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you. 13 I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and where you made a vow to me. Now leave this land at once and go back to your native land.’ "

14 Then Rachel and Leah replied, "Do we still have any share in the inheritance of our father’s estate? 15 Does he not regard us as foreigners? Not only has he sold us, but he has used up what was paid for us. 16 Surely all the wealth that God took away from our father belongs to us and our children. So do whatever God has told you."

17 Then Jacob put his children and his wives on camels, 18 and he drove all his livestock ahead of him, along with all the goods he had accumulated in Paddan Aram,*31:18 That is, Northwest Mesopotamia to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan.

19 When Laban had gone to shear his sheep, Rachel stole her father’s household gods. 20 Moreover, Jacob deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him he was running away. 21 So he fled with all he had, crossed the Euphrates River, and headed for the hill country of Gilead.

Laban Pursues Jacob

22 On the third day Laban was told that Jacob had fled. 23 Taking his relatives with him, he pursued Jacob for seven days and caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead. 24 Then God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and said to him, "Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad."

25 Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead when Laban overtook him, and Laban and his relatives camped there too. 26 Then Laban said to Jacob, "What have you done? You’ve deceived me, and you’ve carried off my daughters like captives in war. 27 Why did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn’t you tell me, so I could send you away with joy and singing to the music of timbrels and harps? 28 You didn’t even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye. You have done a foolish thing. 29 I have the power to harm you; but last night the God of your father said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’ 30 Now you have gone off because you longed to return to your father’s household. But why did you steal my gods?"

31 Jacob answered Laban, "I was afraid, because I thought you would take your daughters away from me by force. 32 But if you find anyone who has your gods, that person shall not live. In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself whether there is anything of yours here with me; and if so, take it." Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.

33 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent and into Leah’s tent and into the tent of the two female servants, but he found nothing. After he came out of Leah’s tent, he entered Rachel’s tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the household gods and put them inside her camel’s saddle and was sitting on them. Laban searched through everything in the tent but found nothing.

35 Rachel said to her father, "Don’t be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in your presence; I’m having my period." So he searched but could not find the household gods.

36 Jacob was angry and took Laban to task. "What is my crime?" he asked Laban. "How have I wronged you that you hunt me down? 37 Now that you have searched through all my goods, what have you found that belongs to your household? Put it here in front of your relatives and mine, and let them judge between the two of us.

38 "I have been with you for twenty years now. Your sheep and goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten rams from your flocks. 39 I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen by day or night. 40 This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes. 41 It was like this for the twenty years I was in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flocks, and you changed my wages ten times. 42 If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been with me, you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands, and last night he rebuked you."

43 Laban answered Jacob, "The women are my daughters, the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks. All you see is mine. Yet what can I do today about these daughters of mine, or about the children they have borne? 44 Come now, let’s make a covenant, you and I, and let it serve as a witness between us."

45 So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar. 46 He said to his relatives, "Gather some stones." So they took stones and piled them in a heap, and they ate there by the heap. 47 Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.*31:47 The Aramaic Jegar Sahadutha and the Hebrew Galeed both mean witness heap.

48 Laban said, "This heap is a witness between you and me today." That is why it was called Galeed. 49 It was also called Mizpah,*31:49 Mizpah means watchtower. because he said, "May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other. 50 If you mistreat my daughters or if you take any wives besides my daughters, even though no one is with us, remember that God is a witness between you and me."

51 Laban also said to Jacob, "Here is this heap, and here is this pillar I have set up between you and me. 52 This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness, that I will not go past this heap to your side to harm you and that you will not go past this heap and pillar to my side to harm me. 53 May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us."

So Jacob took an oath in the name of the Fear of his father Isaac. 54 He offered a sacrifice there in the hill country and invited his relatives to a meal. After they had eaten, they spent the night there.

55 Early the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters and blessed them. Then he left and returned home.*31:55 In Hebrew texts this verse (31:55) is numbered 32:1.
