Gênesis 21

O nascimento de Isaque

1 O Senhor foi bondoso com Sara, como lhe dissera, e fez por ela o que prometera. 2 Sara engravidou e deu um filho a Abraão na sua velhice, na época exata que Deus lhe prometera. 3 Abraão deu o nome de Isaque*21.3 Isaque significa ele ri. ao filho que Sara lhe dera. 4 Quando Isaque, o seu filho, tinha oito dias de vida, Abraão o circuncidou, conforme Deus lhe tinha ordenado. 5 Abraão tinha cem anos de idade quando Isaque, o seu filho, nasceu.

6 Sara disse:

— Deus me encheu de riso, e todos os que souberem disso rirão comigo.

7 Ela acrescentou:

— Quem diria a Abraão que Sara amamentaria filhos? Contudo, eu lhe dei um filho na sua velhice!

Abraão expulsa Hagar e Ismael

8 O menino cresceu e foi desmamado. No dia em que Isaque foi desmamado, Abraão preparou um grande banquete. 9 Sara, porém, viu que o filho que Hagar, a egípcia, dera a Abraão estava rindo do seu filho, Isaque.*21.9 Conforme a Septuaginta. O Texto Massorético não traz do seu filho, Isaque.10 Então, ela disse a Abraão:

— Mande embora aquela escrava e o filho dela, porque o filho desta escrava não herdará com o meu filho, Isaque.

11 Abraão ficou muito perturbado com isso, pois se tratava do seu filho. 12 Deus, porém, lhe disse:

— Não se perturbe por causa do menino e da sua escrava. Atenda a tudo o que Sara lhe pedir, porque será por meio de Isaque que a sua descendência há de ser considerada. 13 No entanto, também do filho da escrava farei uma nação, pois ele é descendência sua.

14 Na manhã seguinte, Abraão pegou alguns pães e um odre cheio de água e os entregou a Hagar; ele os colocou nos ombros dela e despediu-a com o menino. Ela se pôs a caminho e andou errante pelo deserto de Berseba.

15 Quando acabou a água da vasilha, ela abandonou o menino debaixo de um arbusto 16 e foi sentar-se à distância de um tiro de flecha, porque pensou: "Não posso ver o menino morrer". Sentada a distância, levantou a voz e chorou.*21.16 A Septuaginta traz distância, o menino começou a chorar.

17 Deus ouviu a voz do menino, e o anjo de Deus, do céu, chamou Hagar e lhe disse:

— O que foi, Hagar? Não tenha medo; Deus ouviu a voz do menino, dali onde ele está. 18 Levante-se, erga o menino e tome-o pela mão, porque dele farei uma grande nação.

19 Então, Deus lhe abriu os olhos, e ela viu um poço de água. Foi até lá, encheu de água a vasilha e deu de beber ao menino.

20 Deus estava com o menino. Ele cresceu, viveu no deserto e tornou-se flecheiro. 21 Vivia no deserto de Parã, e a sua mãe conseguiu para ele uma mulher da terra do Egito.

A aliança entre Abraão e Abimeleque

22 Naquela ocasião, Abimeleque, acompanhado de Ficol, comandante do seu exército, disse a Abraão:

— Deus está com você em tudo o que faz. 23 Agora, jure-me, diante de Deus, que você não vai me enganar, nem a mim, nem aos meus filhos, nem aos meus descendentes. Trate a nação que o acolheu como estrangeiro com a mesma lealdade com que eu o tratei.

24 Abraão respondeu:

— Eu juro!

25 Abraão, porém, reclamou com Abimeleque a respeito de um poço de água do qual os servos de Abimeleque tinham se apropriado. 26 Abimeleque lhe respondeu:

— Não sei quem fez isso. Você também nunca me disse nada, e só fiquei sabendo disso hoje.

27 Então, Abraão tomou ovelhas e bois, deu-os a Abimeleque, e os dois firmaram uma aliança. 28 Abraão separou sete ovelhas do rebanho, 29 e Abimeleque lhe perguntou:

— Que significam estas sete ovelhas que você separou das demais?

30 Ele respondeu:

— Aceite estas sete ovelhas das minhas mãos como testemunho de que eu cavei este poço.

31 Por isso, aquele lugar foi chamado Berseba,*21.31 Berseba pode significar poço dos sete ou poço do juramento. porque ali os dois fizeram um juramento.

32 Firmada a aliança em Berseba, Abimeleque e Ficol, comandante do seu exército, voltaram para a terra dos filisteus. 33 Abraão plantou uma tamargueira em Berseba e ali invocou o nome do Senhor, o Deus eterno. 34 Por muito tempo, Abraão morou na terra dos filisteus.

The Birth of Isaac

1 Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac*21:3 Isaac means he laughs. to the son Sarah bore him. 4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

6 Sarah said, "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me." 7 And she added, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age."

Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away

8 The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast. 9 But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking, 10 and she said to Abraham, "Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac."

11 The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son. 12 But God said to him, "Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring*21:12 Or seed will be reckoned. 13 I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring."

14 Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.

15 When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes. 16 Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, "I cannot watch the boy die." And as she sat there, she*21:16 Hebrew; Septuagint the child began to sob.

17 God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18 Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation."

19 Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.

20 God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer. 21 While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt.

The Treaty at Beersheba

22 At that time Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces said to Abraham, "God is with you in everything you do. 23 Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness I have shown to you."

24 Abraham said, "I swear it."

25 Then Abraham complained to Abimelek about a well of water that Abimelek’s servants had seized. 26 But Abimelek said, "I don’t know who has done this. You did not tell me, and I heard about it only today."

27 So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelek, and the two men made a treaty. 28 Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock, 29 and Abimelek asked Abraham, "What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs you have set apart by themselves?"

30 He replied, "Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness that I dug this well."

31 So that place was called Beersheba,*21:31 Beersheba can mean well of seven and well of the oath. because the two men swore an oath there.

32 After the treaty had been made at Beersheba, Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces returned to the land of the Philistines. 33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord, the Eternal God. 34 And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for a long time.
