Jacó abençoa Manassés e Efraim

1 Algum tempo depois, disseram a José:

— O seu pai está doente.

Então, ele foi vê-lo, levando consigo os seus dois filhos, Manassés e Efraim, 2 e anunciaram a Jacó:

— O seu filho José veio vê-lo.

Israel reuniu forças e sentou-se na cama.

3 Então, Jacó disse a José:

— O Deus Todo-poderoso*48.3 Hebraico: El-Shadai. apareceu-me em Luz, na terra de Canaã, e me abençoou, 4 dizendo: "Eu o farei fértil e o multiplicarei. Farei de você uma comunidade de povos e darei esta terra por propriedade perpétua à sua descendência".

5 — Agora, pois, os seus dois filhos que lhe nasceram no Egito, antes que eu viesse ficar com você, serão reconhecidos como meus; Efraim e Manassés serão meus, como são meus Rúben e Simeão. 6 Os filhos que lhe nascerem depois deles serão seus; serão convocados sob o nome dos seus irmãos para receberem a sua herança. 7 Quando eu voltava de Padã,*48.7 Isto é, a região noroeste da Mesopotâmia. para a minha tristeza Raquel morreu em Canaã, quando ainda estávamos a caminho, a pouca distância de Efrata. 8 Quando Israel viu os filhos de José, perguntou:

— Quem são estes?

9 José respondeu ao seu pai:

— São os filhos que Deus me deu aqui.

Então, Israel disse:

— Traga-os aqui para que eu os abençoe.

10 Os olhos de Israel já estavam enfraquecidos por causa da idade avançada, e ele mal podia enxergar. Por isso, José levou os seus filhos para perto dele, e o seu pai os beijou e os abraçou.

11 Israel disse a José:

— Nunca pensei que veria a sua face novamente, e agora Deus me concede ver também os seus filhos!

12 Em seguida, José os tirou dos joelhos de Israel e curvou-se com o rosto em terra. 13 Depois, José tomou os dois, Efraim à sua direita, perto da mão esquerda de Israel, e Manassés à sua esquerda, perto da mão direita de Israel, e os aproximou dele. 14 Israel, porém, estendeu a mão direita e a pôs sobre a cabeça de Efraim, embora este fosse o mais novo, e, cruzando os braços, pôs a mão esquerda sobre a cabeça de Manassés, embora Manassés fosse o primogênito.

15 Então, abençoou José, dizendo:

"Que o Deus em cuja presença andaram os meus pais, Abraão e Isaque,

o Deus que tem sido o meu pastor

em toda a minha vida até o dia de hoje,

16 o Anjo que me redimiu de todo o mal,

abençoe estes meninos.

Que por meio deles sejam lembrados o meu nome

e o nome dos meus pais, Abraão e Isaque,

e que eles cresçam como uma multidão na terra".

17 Quando José viu o seu pai colocar a mão direita sobre a cabeça de Efraim, não gostou; por isso, pegou a mão do pai, a fim de mudá-la da cabeça de Efraim para a de Manassés, 18 e lhe disse:

— Não, meu pai, este aqui é o primogênito; põe a mão direita sobre a cabeça dele.

19 O seu pai, porém, recusou e respondeu:

— Eu sei, meu filho, eu sei. Ele também se tornará um povo; também será grande. Apesar disso, o seu irmão mais novo será maior do que ele, e a sua descendência será uma multidão de nações.

20 Assim, Jacó os abençoou naquele dia, dizendo:

"Por meio de você, Israel pronunciará esta bênção.

‘Que Deus faça a você como fez a Efraim e a Manassés!’ ".

Assim, colocou Efraim à frente de Manassés.

21 A seguir, Israel disse a José:

— Estou para morrer, mas Deus estará com vocês e os levará de volta à terra dos seus antepassados. 22 Dou a você, da região montanhosa*48.22 Ou Dou a você Siquém. que tomei dos amorreus com a minha espada e com o meu arco, uma parte a mais do que aos seus irmãos.

Manasseh and Ephraim

1 Some time later Joseph was told, "Your father is ill." So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim along with him. 2 When Jacob was told, "Your son Joseph has come to you," Israel rallied his strength and sat up on the bed.

3 Jacob said to Joseph, "God Almighty*48:3 Hebrew El-Shaddai appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me 4 and said to me, ‘I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers. I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.’

5 "Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine. 6 Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers. 7 As I was returning from Paddan,*48:7 That is, Northwest Mesopotamia to my sorrow Rachel died in the land of Canaan while we were still on the way, a little distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath" (that is, Bethlehem).

8 When Israel saw the sons of Joseph, he asked, "Who are these?"

9 "They are the sons God has given me here," Joseph said to his father.

Then Israel said, "Bring them to me so I may bless them."

10 Now Israel’s eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see. So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them and embraced them.

11 Israel said to Joseph, "I never expected to see your face again, and now God has allowed me to see your children too."

12 Then Joseph removed them from Israel’s knees and bowed down with his face to the ground. 13 And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel’s left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them close to him. 14 But Israel reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim’s head, though he was the younger, and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.

15 Then he blessed Joseph and said,

"May the God before whom my fathers

Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully,

the God who has been my shepherd

all my life to this day,

16 the Angel who has delivered me from all harm

—may he bless these boys.

May they be called by my name

and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac,

and may they increase greatly

on the earth."

17 When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand on Ephraim’s head he was displeased; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18 Joseph said to him, "No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head."

19 But his father refused and said, "I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will become great. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a group of nations." 20 He blessed them that day and said,

"In your*48:20 The Hebrew is singular. name will Israel pronounce this blessing:

‘May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.’ "

So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.

21 Then Israel said to Joseph, "I am about to die, but God will be with you*48:21 The Hebrew is plural. and take you*48:21 The Hebrew is plural. back to the land of your*48:21 The Hebrew is plural. fathers. 22 And to you I give one more ridge of land*48:22 The Hebrew for ridge of land is identical with the place name Shechem. than to your brothers, the ridge I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow."
