1 Portanto, que diremos do nosso antepassado Abraão?2 Se de fato Abraão foi justificado pelas obras, ele tem do que se gloriar, mas não diante de Deus.3 Que diz a Escritura? "Abraão creu em Deus, e isso lhe foi creditado como justiça".4 Ora, o salário do homem que trabalha não é considerado como favor, mas como dívida.5 Todavia, àquele que não trabalha, mas confia em Deus que justifica o ímpio, sua fé lhe é creditada como justiça.6 Davi diz a mesma coisa, quando fala da felicidade do homem a quem Deus credita justiça independente de obras:7 "Como são felizes aqueles que têm suas transgressões perdoadas, cujos pecados são apagados.8 Como é feliz aquele a quem o Senhor não atribui culpa".9 Destina-se esta felicidade apenas aos circuncisos ou também aos incircuncisos? Já dissemos que, no caso de Abraão, a fé lhe foi creditada como justiça.10 Sob quais circunstâncias? Antes ou depois de ter sido circuncidado? Não foi depois, mas antes!11 Assim ele recebeu a circuncisão como sinal, como selo da justiça que ele tinha pela fé, quando ainda não fora circuncidado. Portanto, ele é o pai de todos os que crêem, sem terem sido circuncidados, a fim de que a justiça fosse creditada também a eles;12 e é igualmente o pai dos circuncisos que não somente são circuncisos, mas também andam nos passos da fé que teve nosso pai Abraão antes de passar pela circuncisão.13 Não foi mediante a lei que Abraão e a sua descendência receberam a promessa de que ele seria o herdeiro do mundo, mas mediante a justiça que vem da fé.14 Pois se os que vivem pela lei são herdeiros, a fé não tem valor, e a promessa é inútil;15 porque a lei produz a ira. E onde não há lei, não há transgressão.16 Portanto, a promessa vem pela fé, para que seja de acordo com a graça e seja assim garantida a toda a descendência de Abraão; não apenas aos que estão sob o regime da lei, mas também aos que têm a fé que Abraão teve. Ele é o pai de todos nós.17 Como está escrito: "Eu o constituí pai de muitas nações". Ele é nosso pai aos olhos de Deus, em quem creu, o Deus que dá vida aos mortos e chama à existência coisas que não existem, como se existissem.18 Abraão, contra toda esperança, em esperança creu, tornando-se assim pai de muitas nações, como foi dito a seu respeito: "Assim será a sua descendência".19 Sem se enfraquecer na fé, reconheceu que o seu corpo já estava sem vitalidade, pois já contava cerca de cem anos de idade, e que também o ventre de Sara já estava sem vitalidade.20 Mesmo assim não duvidou nem foi incrédulo em relação à promessa de Deus, mas foi fortalecido em sua fé e deu glória a Deus,21 estando plenamente convencido de que ele era poderoso para cumprir o que havia prometido.22 Em conseqüência, "isso lhe foi também creditado como justiça".23 As palavras "lhe foi creditado" não foram escritas apenas para ele,24 mas também para nós, a quem Deus creditará justiça, para nós, que cremos naquele que ressuscitou dos mortos a Jesus, nosso Senhor.25 Ele foi entregue à morte por nossos pecados e ressuscitado para nossa justificação.

1 What shall we say about Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh?2 If Abraham was declared righteous by works, he could boast, but not to God.3 For what does the scriptures say? »Abraham believed Jehovah, and it was counted to him as righteousness.« (Genesis 15:6)4 The pay is counted to the man who works. It is not as grace but as a debt.5 He who does not work but believes in him who justifies absolves the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.6 David also pronounces blessing on the man, to whom God counts righteousness apart from works,7 saying: »Blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.8 »Blessed is the man to whom, Jehovah will not impute sin.« (Psalm 32:2)9 Is this blessing then pronounced upon the circumcised only, or upon the uncircumcised also? For we say: »To Abraham his faith was counted for righteousness.«10 How then was it counted? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision:11 He received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith that he had while he was not circumcised. That way he could be the father of all those who believe, though they are not circumcised, that righteousness might be counted to them.12 The father of circumcision to those who not only are circumcised, but who also walk in the steps of faith of our father Abraham that he had when he was not circumcised.13 The promise to Abraham or to his seed that he should be heir of the world was not through the law but through righteousness by faith.14 If those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of no effect.15 The law produces wrath violent passionindignation. But where there is no law there is no sin.16 For this reason it is by faith that it may be according to grace divine influenceloving-kindness. The promise may be sure to all descendants! This is not only to that which is of the law, but to that also which is by the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.17 It is written: »I have made you a father of many nations.« This was in the presence of God, the one in whom he believed. He gives life to the dead, and calls into being that which does not exist.18 In hope against hope Abraham believed that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken: »So your descendants will be.«19 Not being weak in faith he considered his own body now as good as dead he being about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.20 Yet, he looked to the promise of God. He did not waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith. He gave the glory to God!21 He was fully assured that what he had promised, he was able to perform.22 »It was counted to him as righteousness.«23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was counted to him.24 It is also for our sake, to whom it shall be counted, who believe in him that raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,25 who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification acquittal.
