1 Os israelitas partiram e acamparam nas campinas de Moabe, para além do Jordão, perto de Jericó.2 Balaque, filho de Zipor, viu tudo o que Israel tinha feito aos amorreus,3 e Moabe teve muito medo do povo, porque era muita gente. Moabe teve pavor dos israelitas.4 Então os moabitas disseram aos líderes de Midiã: "Essa multidão devorará tudo o que há ao nosso redor, como o boi devora o capim do pasto". Balaque, filho de Zipor, rei de Moabe naquela época,5 enviou mensageiros para chamar Balaão, filho de Beor, que estava em Petor, perto do Rio, em sua terra natal. A mensagem de Balaque dizia: "Um povo que saiu do Egito cobre a face da terra e se estabeleceu perto de mim.6 Venha agora lançar uma maldição contra ele, pois é forte demais para mim. Talvez então eu tenha condições de derrotá-lo e de expulsá-lo da terra. Pois sei que quem você abençoa é abençoado, e quem você amaldiçoa é amaldiçoado".7 Os líderes de Moabe e os de Midiã partiram, levando consigo o preço para os encantamentos mágicos. Quando chegaram, comunicaram a Balaão o que Balaque tinha dito.8 Disse-lhes Balaão: "Passem a noite aqui, e eu lhes trarei a resposta que o Senhor me der". E os líderes moabitas ficaram com ele.9 Deus veio a Balaão e lhe perguntou: "Quem são esses homens que estão com você? "10 Balaão respondeu a Deus: "Balaque, filho de Zipor, rei de Moabe, enviou-me esta mensagem:11 ‘Um povo que saiu do Egito cobre a face da terra. Venha agora lançar uma maldição contra ele. Talvez então eu tenha condições de derrotá-lo e de expulsá-lo’ ".12 Mas Deus disse a Balaão: "Não vá com eles. Você não poderá amaldiçoar este povo, porque é povo abençoado".13 Na manhã seguinte Balaão se levantou e disse aos líderes de Balaque: "Voltem para a sua terra, pois o Senhor não permitiu que eu os acompanhe".14 Os líderes moabitas voltaram a Balaque e lhe disseram: "Balaão recusou-se a acompanhar-nos".15 Balaque enviou outros líderes, em maior número e mais importantes do que os primeiros.16 Eles foram a Balaão e lhe disseram: "Assim diz Balaque, filho de Zipor: Que nada o impeça de vir a mim,17 porque o recompensarei generosamente e farei tudo o que você me disser. Venha, por favor, e lance para mim uma maldição contra este povo".18 Balaão, porém, respondeu aos conselheiros de Balaque: "Mesmo que Balaque me desse o seu palácio cheio de prata e de ouro, eu não poderia fazer coisa alguma, grande ou pequena, que vá além da ordem do Senhor meu Deus.19 Agora, fiquem também vocês aqui esta noite, e eu descobrirei o que mais o Senhor tem para dizer-me".20 Naquela noite Deus veio a Balaão e lhe disse: "Visto que esses homens vieram chamá-lo, vá com eles, mas faça apenas o que eu lhe disser".21 Balaão levantou-se pela manhã, pôs a sela sobre a sua jumenta e foi com os líderes de Moabe.22 Mas acendeu-se a ira de Deus quando ele foi, e o anjo do Senhor pôs-se no caminho para impedi-lo de prosseguir. Balaão ia montado em sua jumenta, e seus dois servos o acompanhavam.23 Quando a jumenta viu o anjo do Senhor parado no caminho, empunhando uma espada, saiu do caminho e foi-se pelo campo. Balaão bateu nela para fazê-la voltar ao caminho.24 Então o anjo do Senhor se pôs num caminho estreito entre duas vinhas, com muros dos dois lados.25 Quando a jumenta viu o anjo do Senhor, encostou-se no muro, apertando o pé de Balaão contra ele. Por isso ele bateu nela de novo.26 O anjo do Senhor foi adiante e se colocou num lugar estreito, e não havia espaço para desviar, nem para a direita nem para a esquerda.27 Quando a jumenta viu o anjo do Senhor, deitou-se debaixo de Balaão. Acendeu-se a ira de Balaão, que bateu nela com a sua vara.28 Então o Senhor abriu a boca da jumenta, e ela disse a Balaão: "Que foi que eu lhe fiz, para você bater em mim três vezes? "29 Balaão respondeu à jumenta: "Você me fez de tolo! Quem dera eu tivesse uma espada na mão; eu a mataria agora mesmo".30 Mas a jumenta disse a Balaão: "Não sou sua jumenta, que você sempre montou até o dia de hoje? Tenho eu o costume de fazer isso com você? " "Não", disse ele.31 Então o Senhor abriu os olhos de Balaão, e ele viu o anjo do Senhor parado no caminho, empunhando a sua espada. Então Balaão inclinou-se e prostrou-se, rosto em terra.32 E o anjo do Senhor lhe perguntou: "Por que você bateu três vezes em sua jumenta? Eu vim aqui para impedi-lo de prosseguir porque o seu caminho me desagrada.33 A jumenta me viu e se afastou de mim por três vezes. Se ela não se afastasse a esta altura eu certamente o teria matado; mas a ela eu teria poupado".34 Balaão disse ao anjo do Senhor: "Pequei. Não percebi que estavas parado no caminho para me impedires de prosseguir. Agora, se o que estou fazendo te desagrada, eu voltarei".35 Então o anjo do Senhor disse a Balaão: "Vá com os homens, mas fale apenas o que eu lhe disser". Assim Balaão foi com os príncipes de Balaque.36 Quando Balaque soube que Balaão estava chegando, foi ao seu encontro na cidade moabita da fronteira do Arnom, no limite do seu território.37 E Balaque disse a Balaão: "Não mandei chamá-lo urgentemente? Por que não veio? Acaso não tenho condições de recompensá-lo? "38 "Aqui estou! ", respondeu Balaão. "Mas, seria eu capaz de dizer alguma coisa? Direi somente o que Deus puser em minha boca".39 Então Balaão foi com Balaque até Quiriate-Huzote.40 Balaque sacrificou bois e ovelhas, e deu parte da carne a Balaão e aos líderes que com ele estavam.41 Na manhã seguinte Balaque levou Balaão até o alto de Bamote-Baal, de onde viu uma parte do povo.

1 And the sons of Israel journeyed, and encamped in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho.2 And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.3 And Moab was very afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the sons of Israel.4 And Moab said to the elders of Midian, Now this multitude will lick up all that is round about us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.5 And he sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor, to Pethor, which is by the River, to the land of the sons of Amav, to call him, saying, Look, there is a people come out from Egypt: see, they cover the face of the earth, and they dwell across from me.6 Come now therefore, I pray you, curse this people for me; for they are too mighty for me: perhaps I will prevail, that we may strike them, and that I may drive them out of the land; for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.7 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of fortune-telling in their hand; and they came to Balaam, and spoke to him the words of Balak.8 And he said to them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you{+} word again, as Yahweh will speak to me: and the princes of Moab remained with Balaam.9 And God came to Balaam, and said, What men are these with you?10 And Balaam said to God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me, [saying],11 Look, a people has come out of Egypt, which covers the face of the earth: now, come curse them for me; perhaps I will be able to fight against them, and will drive them out.12 And God said to Balaam, You will not go with them; you will not curse the people; for they are blessed.13 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said to the princes of Balak, You{+} get into your{+} land; for Yahweh refuses to give me leave to go with you{+}.14 And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went to Balak, and said, Balaam refuses to come with us.15 And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honorable than they.16 And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus says Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray you, hinder you from coming to me:17 for I will promote you to very great honor, and whatever you say to me I will do: come therefore, I pray you, curse this people for me.18 And Balaam answered and said to the slaves of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I can't go beyond the word of Yahweh my God, to do less or more.19 Now therefore, I pray you{+}, you{+} also tarry here this night, that I may know what Yahweh will speak to me more.20 And God came to Balaam at night, and said to him, If the men have come to call you, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I speak to you, that you will do.21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab.22 And God's anger was kindled because he went; and the angel of Yahweh placed himself in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding on his donkey, and his two attendants were with him.23 And the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and the donkey turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam struck the donkey, to turn her into the way.24 Then the angel of Yahweh stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.25 And the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, and she thrust herself to the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he struck her again.26 And the angel of Yahweh went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.27 And the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, and she lay down under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he struck the donkey with his staff.28 And Yahweh opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?29 And Balaam said to the donkey, Because you have mocked me, If there were a sword in my hand, I would have killed you by now.30 And the donkey said to Balaam, Am I not your donkey, on which you have ridden all your life long to this day? Was I ever in the habit to do so to you? And he said, No.31 Then Yahweh opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed his head, and fell on his face.32 And the angel of Yahweh said to him, Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Look, I have come forth for an adversary, because your way is precipitous before me:33 and the donkey saw me, and turned aside before me these three times: unless she had turned aside from me, surely I would have even killed you by now, and saved her alive.34 And Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, I have sinned; for I didn't know that you stood in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease you, I will get myself back again.35 And the angel of Yahweh said to Balaam, Go with the men; but only the word that I will speak to you, that you will speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.36 And when Balak heard that Balaam came, he went out to meet him to Ar of Moab, which is on the border of the Arnon, which is in the utmost part of the border.37 And Balak said to Balaam, Didn't I earnestly send to you to call you? Why didn't you come to me? Am I not able indeed to promote you to honor?38 And Balaam said to Balak, Look, I have come to you: do I now have any power at all to speak anything? The word that God puts in my mouth, that I will speak.39 And Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath-huzoth.40 And Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes who were with him.41 And it came to pass in the morning, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal; and he saw from there the utmost part of the people.
