1 Nas campinas de Moabe, junto ao Jordão, do outro lado de Jericó, o Senhor disse a Moisés:2 "Ordene aos israelitas que, da herança que possuem, dêem cidades para os levitas morarem. E dêem-lhes também pastagens ao redor das cidades.3 Assim eles terão cidades para habitar e pastagens para o gado, para os rebanhos e para todos os seus outros animais de criação.4 "As pastagens ao redor das cidades que vocês derem aos levitas se estenderão para fora quatrocentos e cinqüenta metros, a partir do muro da cidade.5 Do lado de fora da cidade, meçam novecentos metros para o lado leste, para o lado sul, para o lado oeste e para o lado norte, tendo a cidade no centro. Eles terão essa área para pastagens das cidades.6 "Seis das cidades que vocês derem aos levitas serão cidades de refúgio, para onde poderá fugir quem tiver matado alguém. Além disso, dêem a eles outras quarenta e duas cidades.7 Ao todo, vocês darão aos levitas quarenta e oito cidades, juntamente com as suas pastagens.8 As cidades que derem aos levitas, das terras dos israelitas, deverão ser dadas proporcionalmente à herança de cada tribo; tomem muitas cidades da tribo que tem muitas, mas poucas da que tem poucas".9 Disse também o Senhor a Moisés:10 "Diga aos israelitas: Quando vocês atravessarem o Jordão e entrarem em Canaã,11 escolham algumas cidades para serem suas cidades de refúgio, para onde poderá fugir quem tiver matado alguém sem intenção.12 Elas serão locais de refúgio contra o vingador da vítima, a fim de que alguém acusado de assassinato não morra antes de apresentar-se para julgamento perante a comunidade.13 As seis cidades que vocês derem serão suas cidades de refúgio.14 Designem três cidades de refúgio deste lado do Jordão e três outras em Canaã.15 As seis cidades servirão de refúgio para os israelitas, para os estrangeiros residentes e para quaisquer outros estrangeiros que vivam entre eles, para que todo aquele que tiver matado alguém sem intenção possa fugir para lá.16 "Se um homem ferir alguém com um objeto de ferro de modo que esta pessoa morra, ele é assassino; o assassino terá que ser executado.17 Ou, se alguém tiver nas mãos uma pedra que possa matar, e ferir uma pessoa de modo que ela morra, é assassino; o assassino terá que ser executado.18 Ou, se alguém tiver nas mãos um pedaço de madeira que possa matar, e ferir uma pessoa de modo que ela morra, é assassino; o assassino terá que ser executado.19 O vingador da vítima matará o assassino; quando o encontrar o matará.20 Se alguém, com ódio, empurrar uma pessoa premeditadamente ou atirar alguma coisa contra ela de modo que ela morra,21 ou se com hostilidade der-lhe um soco provocando a sua morte, ele terá que ser executado; é assassino. O vingador da vítima matará o assassino quando encontrá-lo.22 "Todavia, se alguém, sem hostilidade, empurrar uma pessoa ou atirar alguma coisa contra ela sem intenção,23 ou se, sem vê-la, deixar cair sobre ela uma pedra que possa matá-la, e ela morrer, então, como não era sua inimiga e não pretendia feri-la,24 a comunidade deverá julgar entre ele e o vingador da vítima de acordo com essas leis.25 A comunidade protegerá o acusado de assassinato do vingador da vítima e o enviará de volta à cidade de refúgio para onde tinha fugido. Ali permanecerá até a morte do sumo sacerdote, que foi ungido com o óleo santo.26 "Se, contudo, o acusado sair dos limites da cidade de refúgio para onde fugiu27 e o vingador da vítima o encontrar fora da cidade, ele poderá matar o acusado sem ser culpado de assassinato.28 O acusado deverá permanecer em sua cidade de refúgio até a morte do sumo sacerdote; somente depois da morte do sumo sacerdote poderá voltar à sua propriedade.29 "Estas exigências legais serão para vocês e para as suas futuras gerações, onde quer que vocês vivam.30 "Quem matar uma pessoa terá que ser executado como assassino mediante depoimento de testemunhas. Mas ninguém será executado mediante o depoimento de apenas uma testemunha.31 "Não aceitem resgate pela vida de um assassino; ele merece morrer. Certamente terá que ser executado.32 "Não aceitem resgate por alguém que tenha fugido para uma cidade de refúgio, permitindo que ele retorne e viva em sua própria terra antes da morte do sumo sacerdote.33 "Não profanem a terra onde vocês estão. O derramamento de sangue profana a terra, e só se pode fazer propiciação em favor da terra em que se derramou sangue, mediante o sangue do assassino que o derramou.34 Não contaminem a terra onde vocês vivem e onde eu habito, pois eu, o Senhor, habito entre os israelitas".

1 And Yahweh spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying,2 Command the sons of Israel, that they give to the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and suburbs for the cities round about them you{+} will give to the Levites.3 And the cities they will have to dwell in; and their suburbs will be for their cattle, and for their substance, and for all their beasts.4 And the suburbs of the cities, which you{+} will give to the Levites, will be from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about.5 And you{+} will measure outside the city for the east side two thousand cubits, and for the south side two thousand cubits, and for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the midst. This will be to them the suburbs of the cities.6 And the cities which you{+} will give to the Levites, they will be the six cities of refuge, which you{+} will give for the manslayer to flee to: and besides them you{+} will give forty and two cities.7 All the cities which you{+} will give to the Levites will be forty and eight cities; them [you{+} will give] with their suburbs.8 And concerning the cities which you{+} will give of the possession of the sons of Israel, from the many you{+} will take many; and from the few you{+} will take few: every one according to his inheritance which he inherits will give of his cities to the Levites.9 And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,10 Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them, When you{+} pass over the Jordan into the land of Canaan,11 then you{+} will appoint yourselves cities to be cities of refuge for you{+}, that the manslayer that kills any person unintentionally may flee there.12 And the cities will be to you{+} for refuge from the avenger, that the manslayer will not die, until he stands before the congregation for judgment.13 And the cities which you{+} will give will be for you{+} six cities of refuge.14 You{+} will give three cities beyond the Jordan, and three cities you{+} will give in the land of Canaan; they will be cities of refuge.15 For the sons of Israel, and for the stranger and for the sojourner among them, will these six cities be for refuge; that everyone who kills any person unintentionally may flee there.16 But if he struck him with an instrument of iron, so that he died, he is a murderer: the murderer will surely be put to death.17 And if he struck him with a stone in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer: the murderer will surely be put to death.18 Or if he struck him with a weapon of wood in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer: the murderer will surely be put to death.19 The avenger of blood will himself put the murderer to death: when he meets him, he will put him to death.20 And if he thrusts him of hatred, or hurled at him, lying in wait, so that he died,21 or in enmity struck him with his hand, so that he died; he who struck him will surely be put to death; he is a murderer: the avenger of blood will put the murderer to death, when he meets him.22 But if he thrusts him suddenly without enmity, or hurled on him anything without lying in wait,23 or with any stone, by which a man may die, not seeing him, and cast it on him, so that he died, and he wasn't his enemy, neither sought his harm;24 then the congregation will judge between the striker and the avenger of blood according to these ordinances;25 and the congregation will deliver the manslayer out of the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation will restore him to his city of refuge, where he has fled: and he will dwell in it until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil.26 But if the manslayer will at any time go beyond the border of his city of refuge, where he flees,27 and the avenger of blood finds him outside the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood slays the manslayer; he will not be guilty of blood,28 because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the manslayer will return into the land of his possession.29 And these things will be for a statute [and] ordinance to you{+} throughout your{+} generations in all your{+} dwellings.30 Whoever kills any person, the murderer will be slain at the mouth of witnesses: but one witness will not testify against any person that he die.31 Moreover you{+} will take no ransom for the life of a murderer, who is guilty of death; but he will surely be put to death.32 And you{+} will take no ransom for someone to flee to his city of refuge, to come back to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.33 So you{+} will not pollute the land in which you{+} are: for blood, it pollutes the land; and no expiation can be made for the land for the blood that is shed in it, but by the blood of him who shed it.34 And you will not defile the land which you{+} inhabit, in the midst of which I stay: for I, Yahweh, stay in the midst of the sons of Israel.
