1 As tribos de Rúben e de Gade, donas de numerosos rebanhos, viram que as terras de Jazar e de Gileade eram próprias para a criação de gado.2 Por isso foram a Moisés, ao sacerdote Eleazar e aos líderes da comunidade, e disseram:3 "Atarote, Dibom, Jazar, Ninra, Hesbom, Eleale, Sebã, Nebo e Beom,4 terras que o Senhor subjugou perante a comunidade de Israel, são próprias para a criação de gado, e os seus servos possuem gado".5 E acrescentaram: "Se podemos contar com o favor de vocês, deixem que essa terra seja dada a estes seus servos como nossa herança. Não nos façam atravessar o Jordão".6 Moisés respondeu aos homens de Gade e de Rúben: "E os seus compatriotas irão à guerra enquanto vocês ficam aqui?7 Por que vocês desencorajam os israelitas de entrar na terra que o Senhor lhes deu?8 Foi isso que os pais de vocês fizeram quando os enviei de Cades-Barnéia para verem a terra.9 Depois de subirem ao vale de Escol e examinarem a terra, desencorajaram os israelitas de entrar na terra que o Senhor lhes tinha dado.10 A ira do Senhor se acendeu naquele dia, e ele fez este juramento:11 ‘Como não me seguiram de coração íntegro, nenhum dos homens de vinte anos para cima que saíram do Egito verá a terra que prometi sob juramento a Abraão, a Isaque e a Jacó,12 com exceção de Calebe, filho de Jefoné, o quenezeu, e Josué, filho de Num, seguiram ao Senhor com integridade de coração’.13 A ira do Senhor acendeu-se contra Israel, e ele os fez andar errantes no deserto durante quarenta anos, até que passou toda a geração daqueles que lhe tinham desagradado com seu mau procedimento.14 "E aí estão vocês, raça de pecadores, pondo-se no lugar dos seus antepassados e acendendo ainda mais a ira do Senhor contra Israel.15 Se deixarem de segui-lo, de novo ele os abandonará no deserto, e vocês serão o motivo da destruição de todo este povo".16 Então se aproximaram dele e disseram: "Gostaríamos de construir aqui currais para o nosso gado e cidades para as nossas mulheres e filhos.17 Mas nós nos armaremos e estaremos prontos para ir à frente dos israelitas até que os tenhamos levado ao seu lugar. Enquanto isso, nossas mulheres e nossos filhos morarão em cidades fortificadas para se proteger dos habitantes da terra.18 Não retornaremos aos nossos lares enquanto todos os israelitas não receberem a sua herança.19 Não receberemos herança alguma com eles do outro lado do Jordão, uma vez que a nossa herança nos seja dada no lado leste do Jordão".20 Disse-lhes Moisés: "Se fizerem isso, se perante o Senhor vocês se armarem para a guerra,21 e se, armados, todos vocês atravessarem o Jordão perante o Senhor até que ele tenha expulsado os seus inimigos da frente dele,22 então, quando a terra estiver subjugada perante o Senhor, vocês poderão voltar e estarão livres da sua obrigação para com o Senhor e para com Israel. E esta terra será propriedade de vocês perante o Senhor.23 "Mas, se vocês não fizerem isso, estarão pecando contra o Senhor; e estejam certos de que vocês não escaparão do pecado que cometeram.24 Construam cidades para as suas mulheres e crianças, e currais para os seus rebanhos, mas façam o que vocês prometeram".25 Então os homens de Gade e de Rúben disseram a Moisés: "Nós, seus servos, faremos como o meu senhor ordena.26 Nossos filhos e mulheres, todos os nossos rebanhos ficarão aqui nas cidades de Gileade.27 Mas os seus servos, todos os homens armados para a batalha, atravessarão para lutar perante o Senhor, assim como o meu senhor está dizendo".28 Moisés deu as seguintes instruções acerca deles ao sacerdote Eleazar, a Josué, filho de Num, e aos chefes de família das tribos israelitas:29 "Se os homens de Gade e de Rúben, todos eles armados para a batalha, atravessarem o Jordão com vocês perante o Senhor, então, quando a terra for subjugada perante vocês, entreguem-lhes como propriedade a terra de Gileade.30 Mas, se não atravessarem armados com vocês, terão que aceitar a propriedade deles com vocês em Canaã".31 Os homens de Gade e de Rúben responderam: "Os seus servos farão o que o Senhor disse.32 Atravessaremos o Jordão perante o Senhor e entraremos armados em Canaã, mas a propriedade que vamos herdar estará deste lado do Jordão".33 Então Moisés deu às tribos de Gade e de Rúben e à metade da tribo de Manassés, filho de José, o reino de Seom, rei dos amorreus, e o reino de Ogue, rei de Basã, toda a terra com as suas cidades e o território ao redor delas.34 A tribo de Gade construiu Dibom, Atarote, Aroer,35 Atarote-Sofã, Jazar, Jogbeá,36 Bete-Ninra e Bete-Harã como cidades fortificadas, e fez currais para os seus rebanhos.37 E a tribo de Rúben reconstruiu Hesbom, Eleale e Quiriataim,38 bem como Nebo e Baal-Meom ( esses nomes foram mudados ) e Sibma. E deu outros nomes a essas cidades.39 Os descendentes de Maquir, filho de Manassés, foram a Gileade, tomaram posse dela e expulsaram os amorreus que lá estavam.40 Então Moisés deu Gileade aos maquiritas, descendentes de Manassés, e eles passaram a habitar ali.41 Jair, descendente de Manassés, conquistou os povoados deles e os chamou Havote-Jair.42 E Noba conquistou Quenate e os seus povoados e a chamou Noba, de acordo com o seu nome.

1 Now the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, look, the place was a place for cattle;2 the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the princes of the congregation, saying,3 Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Sebam, and Nebo, and Beon,4 the land which Yahweh struck before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle; and your slaves have cattle.5 And they said, If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your slaves for a possession; don't bring us over the Jordan.6 And Moses said to the sons of Gad, and to the sons of Reuben, Will your{+} brothers go to the war, and will you{+} sit here?7 And why do you{+} discourage the heart of the sons of Israel from going over into the land which Yahweh has given them?8 Thus did your{+} fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.9 For when they went up to the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the sons of Israel, that they should not go into the land which Yahweh had given them.10 And Yahweh's anger was kindled in that day, and he swore, saying,11 Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, will see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:12 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun; because they have wholly followed Yahweh.13 And Yahweh's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander to and fro in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of Yahweh, was consumed.14 And, look, you{+} have risen up in your{+} fathers' stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of Yahweh toward Israel.15 For if you{+} turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and you{+} will destroy all this people.16 And they came near to him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:17 but we ourselves will go armed, hastily before the sons of Israel, until we have brought them to their place: and our little ones will dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.18 We will not return to our houses, until the sons of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.19 For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan, and forward; because our inheritance has fallen to us on this side of the Jordan eastward.20 And Moses said to them, If you{+} will do this thing, if you{+} will arm yourselves to go before Yahweh to the war,21 and every armed man of you{+} will pass over the Jordan before Yahweh, until he has driven out his enemies from before him,22 and the land is subdued before Yahweh; then afterward you{+} will return, and be innocent toward Yahweh, and toward Israel; and this land will be to you{+} for a possession before Yahweh.23 But if you{+} will not do so, look, you{+} have sinned against Yahweh; and be sure your{+} sin will find you{+} out.24 Build yourselves cities for your{+} little ones, and folds for your{+} sheep; and do that which has proceeded out of your{+} mouth.25 And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying, Your slaves will do as my lord commands.26 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, will be there in the cities of Gilead;27 but your slaves will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before Yahweh to battle, as my lord says.28 So Moses gave charge concerning them to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers' [houses] of the tribes of the sons of Israel.29 And Moses said to them, If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben will pass with you{+} over the Jordan, every man who is armed to battle, before Yahweh, and the land will be subdued before you{+}; then you{+} will give them the land of Gilead for a possession:30 but if they will not pass over with you{+} armed, they will have possessions among you{+} in the land of Canaan.31 And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben answered, saying, As Yahweh has said to your slaves, so we will do.32 We will pass over armed before Yahweh into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance [will remain] with us beyond the Jordan.33 And Moses gave to them, even to the sons of Gad, and to the sons of Reuben, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, according to its cities with [their] borders, even the cities of the land round about.34 And the sons of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,35 and Atrothshophan, and Jazer, and Jogbehah,36 and Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran: fortified cities, and folds for sheep.37 And the sons of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiriathaim,38 and Nebo, and Baal-meon, (their names being changed,) and Sibmah: and they gave other names to the cities which they built.39 And the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and the Amorites who were in it were dispossessed.40 And Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt in it.41 And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its towns, and called them Havvoth-jair.42 And Nobah went and took Kenath, and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.
