1 Quando Abias morreu e se reuniu a seus antepassados, foi sepultado na Cidade de Davi. Seu filho Asa foi seu sucessor. Houve paz na terra durante dez anos. 2 Asa fez o que era bom e certo aos olhos do Senhor, seu Deus. 3 Removeu os altares estrangeiros e os santuários idólatras, despedaçou as colunas sagradas e derrubou os postes de Aserá. 4 Ordenou ao povo de Judá que buscasse o Senhor, o Deus de seus antepassados, e obedecesse a suas leis e a seus mandamentos. 5 Asa também removeu os santuários idólatras e os altares de incenso de todas as cidades de Judá. Assim, o reino de Asa desfrutou um tempo de paz. 6 Nesse período, ele construiu cidades fortificadas em toda a terra de Judá. Ninguém lutou contra ele durante esses anos, pois o Senhor lhe deu descanso.

7 Asa disse ao povo de Judá: "Vamos construir essas cidades e fortificá-las com muros, torres, portões e trancas. A terra ainda é nossa porque buscamos o Senhor, nosso Deus, e ele nos deu descanso de todos os lados". Assim, eles prosseguiram com os projetos e os concluíram com êxito.

8 O rei Asa tinha um exército de 300 mil guerreiros da tribo de Judá, armados com escudos grandes e lanças. Também tinha um exército de 280 mil guerreiros da tribo de Benjamim, armados com escudos pequenos e arcos. Os dois exércitos eram formados por homens valentes.

9 Certa vez, um etíope chamado Zerá atacou Judá com um exército de um milhão de soldados e trezentos carros de guerra. Avançaram até a cidade de Maressa, 10 de modo que Asa saiu com seu exército para a batalha no vale ao norte de Maressa. 11 Então Asa clamou ao Senhor, seu Deus: "Ó Senhor, ninguém além de ti pode ajudar os fracos contra os poderosos! Ajuda-nos, ó Senhor, nosso Deus, pois em ti confiamos. Em teu nome enfrentamos esse exército imenso. Ó Senhor, tu és nosso Deus; não permitas que simples homens prevaleçam contra ti!".

12 Então o Senhor derrotou os etíopes diante de Asa e do exército de Judá, e eles fugiram. 13 Asa e seu exército os perseguiram até Gerar, e caíram tantos etíopes que não conseguiram se recuperar. Foram destruídos pelo Senhor e por seu exército, e os soldados de Judá levaram grande quantidade de despojos.

14 Enquanto estavam em Gerar, atacaram todas as cidades da região, e o terror do Senhor veio sobre o povo dali. Como resultado, os soldados de Judá levaram muitos despojos também dessas cidades. 15 Atacaram, ainda, os acampamentos onde havia rebanhos e levaram muitas ovelhas e camelos. Em seguida, voltaram para Jerusalém.

1 So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in David’s city; and Asa his son reigned in his place. In his days, the land was quiet ten years. 2 Asa did that which was good and right in Yahweh his God’s eyes, 3 for he took away the foreign altars and the high places, broke down the pillars, cut down the Asherah poles, 4 and commanded Judah to seek Yahweh, the God of their fathers, and to obey his law and command. 5 Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the sun images; and the kingdom was quiet before him. 6 He built fortified cities in Judah; for the land was quiet, and he had no war in those years, because Yahweh had given him rest. 7 For he said to Judah, "Let’s build these cities and make walls around them, with towers, gates, and bars. The land is yet before us, because we have sought Yahweh our God. We have sought him, and he has given us rest on every side." So they built and prospered.

8 Asa had an army of three hundred thousand out of Judah who bore bucklers and spears, and two hundred eighty thousand out of Benjamin who bore shields and drew bows. All these were mighty men of valor.

9 Zerah the Ethiopian came out against them with an army of a million troops and three hundred chariots, and he came to Mareshah. 10 Then Asa went out to meet him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah. 11 Asa cried to Yahweh his God, and said, "Yahweh, there is no one besides you to help, between the mighty and him who has no strength. Help us, Yahweh our God; for we rely on you, and in your name are we come against this multitude. Yahweh, you are our God. Don’t let man prevail against you."

12 So Yahweh struck the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled. 13 Asa and the people who were with him pursued them to Gerar. So many of the Ethiopians fell that they could not recover themselves, for they were destroyed before Yahweh and before his army. Judah’s army carried away very much booty. 14 They struck all the cities around Gerar, for the fear of Yahweh came on them. They plundered all the cities, for there was much plunder in them. 15 They also struck the tents of those who had livestock, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, then returned to Jerusalem.
