1 Todo o povo de Judá proclamou Uzias, de 16 anos, rei, como sucessor de seu pai, Amazias. 2 Depois que seu pai morreu e se reuniu a seus antepassados, Uzias reconstruiu a cidade de Elate e a recuperou para Judá.

3 Uzias tinha 16 anos quando começou a reinar, e reinou em Jerusalém por 52 anos. Sua mãe se chamava Jecolias e era de Jerusalém. 4 Fez o que era certo aos olhos do Senhor, como seu pai, Amazias. 5 Uzias buscou a Deus durante a vida de Zacarias, que o ensinou a temer a Deus. Enquanto o rei buscou a direção do Senhor, Deus lhe deu êxito.

6 Uzias declarou guerra contra os filisteus e derrubou os muros de Gate, Jabne e Asdode. Ele construiu novas cidades na região de Asdode e em outras partes da Filístia. 7 Deus o ajudou nas guerras contra os filisteus, nas batalhas contra os árabes de Gur e nas guerras contra os meunitas. 8 Os meunitas lhe pagavam tributo anual, e sua fama se espalhou até o Egito, pois ele havia se tornado muito poderoso.

9 Uzias construiu torres fortificadas em Jerusalém, junto à porta da Esquina, à porta do Vale e no canto do muro. 10 Também construiu fortalezas no deserto e cavou muitas cisternas, pois tinha grandes rebanhos nas colinas de Judá e na planície. Era um homem que amava a terra. Tinha muitos trabalhadores que cuidavam de seus campos e vinhedos, tanto nas colinas como nos vales férteis.

11 Uzias tinha um exército de guerreiros bem treinados, prontos para irem à batalha, divididos em tropas. Esse exército havia sido convocado e organizado pelo secretário Jeiel e pelo oficial Maaseias. Estavam sob o comando de Hananias, um dos oficiais do rei. 12 As tropas de guerreiros valentes eram comandadas por 2.600 chefes de famílias. 13 O exército era formado por uma elite de 307.500 homens, preparados para ajudar o rei contra qualquer inimigo.

14 Uzias providenciou para todo o exército escudos, lanças, capacetes, couraças, arcos e fundas de atirar pedras. 15 Construiu sobre os muros de Jerusalém máquinas de guerra criadas por peritos; elas atiravam flechas e lançavam grandes pedras das torres e dos cantos dos muros. Sua fama se espalhou até lugares distantes, pois o Senhor o ajudou extraordinariamente e ele se tornou muito poderoso.

16 Quando Uzias se tornou poderoso, também se encheu de orgulho, o que o levou à ruína. Pecou contra o Senhor, seu Deus, ao entrar no santuário do templo do Senhor para queimar incenso no altar de incenso. 17 O sacerdote Azarias foi atrás dele com outros oitenta sacerdotes do Senhor, todos homens corajosos. 18 Confrontaram o rei Uzias e disseram: "Não cabe a você, Uzias, queimar incenso ao Senhor. Isso é tarefa somente dos sacerdotes, os descendentes de Arão, consagrados para esse trabalho. Saia do santuário, pois você pecou. O Senhor Deus não o honrará".

19 Uzias, que segurava um incensário, ficou indignado. Enquanto ele demonstrava sua raiva contra os sacerdotes diante do altar de incenso no templo do Senhor, apareceu lepra em sua testa. 20 Quando viram a lepra, o sumo sacerdote Azarias e todos os outros sacerdotes o expulsaram imediatamente do templo. O próprio rei se apressou em sair dali, pois o Senhor o havia ferido. 21 O rei Uzias ficou leproso até o dia de sua morte. Vivia isolado, numa casa separada, e havia sido excluído do templo do Senhor. Seu filho Jotão tomava conta do palácio e governava o povo.

22 Os demais acontecimentos do reinado de Uzias, do início ao fim, foram registrados pelo profeta Isaías, filho de Amoz. 23 Quando Uzias morreu, foi sepultado com seus antepassados. Seu túmulo ficava num campo próximo que pertencia aos reis, pois o povo disse: "Era leproso". Seu filho Jotão foi seu sucessor.

1 All the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the place of his father Amaziah. 2 He built Eloth and restored it to Judah. After that the king slept with his fathers. 3 Uzziah was sixteen years old when he began to reign; and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jechiliah, of Jerusalem. 4 He did that which was right in Yahweh’s eyes, according to all that his father Amaziah had done. 5 He set himself to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the vision of God; and as long as he sought Yahweh, God made him prosper.

6 He went out and fought against the Philistines, and broke down the wall of Gath, the wall of Jabneh, and the wall of Ashdod; and he built cities in the country of Ashdod, and among the Philistines. 7 God helped him against the Philistines, and against the Arabians who lived in Gur Baal, and the Meunim. 8 The Ammonites gave tribute to Uzziah. His name spread abroad even to the entrance of Egypt, for he grew exceedingly strong. 9 Moreover Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the corner gate, at the valley gate, and at the turning of the wall, and fortified them. 10 He built towers in the wilderness, and dug out many cisterns, for he had much livestock, both in the lowlands and in the plains. He had farmers and vineyard keepers in the mountains and in the fruitful fields, for he loved farming. 11 Moreover Uzziah had an army of fighting men who went out to war by bands, according to the number of their reckoning made by Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the officer, under the hand of Hananiah, one of the king’s captains. 12 The whole number of the heads of fathers’ households, even the mighty men of valor, was two thousand six hundred. 13 Under their hand was an army, three hundred seven thousand five hundred, who made war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy. 14 Uzziah prepared for them, even for all the army, shields, spears, helmets, coats of mail, bows, and stones for slinging. 15 In Jerusalem, he made devices, invented by skillful men, to be on the towers and on the battlements, with which to shoot arrows and great stones. His name spread far abroad, because he was marvelously helped until he was strong.

16 But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up, so that he did corruptly and he trespassed against Yahweh his God, for he went into Yahweh’s temple to burn incense on the altar of incense. 17 Azariah the priest went in after him, and with him eighty priests of Yahweh, who were valiant men. 18 They resisted Uzziah the king, and said to him, "It isn’t for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to Yahweh, but for the priests the sons of Aaron, who are consecrated to burn incense. Go out of the sanctuary, for you have trespassed. It will not be for your honor from Yahweh God."

19 Then Uzziah was angry. He had a censer in his hand to burn incense, and while he was angry with the priests, the leprosy broke out on his forehead before the priests in Yahweh’s house, beside the altar of incense. 20 Azariah the chief priest and all the priests looked at him, and behold, he was leprous in his forehead; and they thrust him out quickly from there. Indeed, he himself also hurried to go out, because Yahweh had struck him. 21 Uzziah the king was a leper to the day of his death, and lived in a separate house, being a leper; for he was cut off from Yahweh’s house. Jotham his son was over the king’s house, judging the people of the land.

22 Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, first and last, Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, wrote. 23 So Uzziah slept with his fathers; and they buried him with his fathers in the field of burial which belonged to the kings, for they said, "He is a leper." Jotham his son reigned in his place.
